The Impact of Culture Resources on City Brand Personality, Relationship Quality, and Loyalty in Tourism City (관광도시 문화자원의 도시브랜드개성, 관계품질, 충성도에 미치는 영향)

  • City culture resources are critical elements to city brand strategies for improving city attraction and provide much contribution to induce visitors from competitive city. A city brand needs to be distinguished and differentiated from competing cities because they are all engaged in the similar environment of city. The differentiation of brand achievement has become increasingly important to highlight certain brand functions to include emotional, self-expressive, and symbolic functions since the importance of such functions has been further emphasized in promoting tourism activities. In particular, That is the recent role of city brand personality that has been emphasized in city management. In other words, visitors now freely and actively express their personalities or egos in tourism activities, taking an important role in construction of a brand asset. The study examines how culture resources affect city brand personality, relationship quality, and city brand royalty in the tourism city. The authors test the proposed model using data from Jeju tourists. The pivotal findings via the structural equation model in the study are as follows; 1) culture resources have been classified culture programs, culture infra, human resources, 2) The city brand personality has been classified as innovativeness, peacefulness, sophistication, confidence and dynamics; 3) The culture resources influenced on the city brand personality; 4) The city brand personality influenced on the satisfaction and involvement; 5) The satisfaction and involvement influenced on the loyalty. Results from the empirical study indicates that culture resources have a strong positive impaction on city brand personality. To increase tourist' royalty of city brand personality, managements must manage culture effectively and create friendly city brand personality to in accord with tourist needs.

A Study on the Elderly Women's Clothing Behavior in Underwear (노년 여성의 내의 구매 행동, 착용 및 관리에 관한 연구 -인천 광역시 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study aimed to evaluate the elderly women's preference to purchase, wear and launder underwear. After having one-to-one interviews with 567 elderly women who they were over 60 in their age in Incheon during the winter of 2000/2001, the differences of their preferences to practicability, economic/comfort, esthetic, symbolic, brand and service were analyzed by SPSS Win pack. When they bought their underwear, they were interested in its practicability most but not its esthetic, brand and service. The more learned and richer economically they were, the shorter sleeves and pants underwear thor had preferences to wear. Most of them wear underwear to keep warm during winter, but some of them wear habitually. They frequently boiled their underwear after washing in warm water with hands. From these tendency underwear for the elderly women should be specified both in bust circumference and in the length of sleeves or pants.

The Role of Intellectual Property Belief between Brand Concept and Brand Extension: Focusing on Mediated Moderation of Thinking Style (브랜드 컨셉과 브랜드확장의 관계에서 지식재산신념의 역할: 사고방식의 매개된 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to find the role of intellectual property belief between brand concepts (Symbolic vs. Functional) and brand extension. For this purpose, three parent brands (Rolex vs. Casio, Prada vs. Coach, Benz vs. Toyota) and three extension products (bracelets, shoes, vehicles) were selected as stimulants through focus group interviews and pre-tests. 296 sample data across the country were collected and the final analysis was conducted with 290 respondents except for the inappropriate respondents by SPSS 21.0. The results of this study confirm that the trademark meditates the relationship between belief brand concepts and brand extension and thinking style of consumers meditated-moderates between belief brand concepts and brand extension. The results of this study are based on implication that intellectual property belief induce consumers positive reactions on brand extension and that the acquisition and utilization of IPRs bring corporate's continuous growth and enhance the corporate brand value.

  • Luxury fashion brands, which have dominated the market of high-priced apparel, bags and shoes, are recently showing changes of stepping into the cosmetics market. The purpose of this study is to examine how luxury fashion brand identity is transferred to cosmetic brand while expanding into luxury cosmetic brand, and to analyze the plastic signs of cosmetic package design and to analyze visual identity through a semi-symbolic system. Therefore, in this study, we tried to analyze the visual semiotic analysis of the package design such as the cushion compact, the lip tint and the brand logo which appeared in the popular product line of the fashion luxury brand such as Yves Saint Laurent and Armani. As a result of the analysis, this study has identified the semantic qualities expressed by each plastic element through the visual semiotic analysis process of the cosmetic package of Yves Saint Laurent and Giorgio Armani. These traits were found to be used as visual signs to reveal the 'Classicism' identity pursued by Yves Saint Laurent and the 'Baroque' identity pursued by Armani. Based on the results of this study, this study finds that the brand identity as a fashion brand is not transferring to the visual identity of cosmetic brands in the case of Yves Saint Laurent. On the other hand, this study found that Armani uses visual communication strategies to effectively transfer the brand identity as a fashion brand to the visual identity of cosmetic brands. On these two different results, it is necessary to examine whether luxury fashion brands and also Korean fashion brands are expanding into the cosmetics market and how they can better grasp the existing brand identity and apply it to the communication strategies of cosmetics brands.

Evaluations of Chinese Brand Name by Different Translation Types: Focusing on The Moderating Role of Brand Concept (영문 브랜드네임의 중문 브랜드네임 전환 방식에 대한 중화권 소비자들의 브랜드 평가에 관한 연구 -브랜드컨셉의 조절효과를 중심으로-)

  • Brand names are often considered as a part of product and important extrinsic cues of product evaluation, when consumers make purchasing decisions. For a company, brand names are also important assets. Building a strong brand name in the Chinese commonwealth is a main challenge for many global companies. One of the first problem global company has to face is how to translate English brand name into Chinese brand name. It is very difficult decision because of cultural and linguistic differences. Western languages are based on an alphabet phonetic system, whereas Chinese are based on ideogram. Chinese speakers are more likely to recall stimuli presented as brand names in visual rather than spoken recall, whereas English speakers are more likely to recall the names in spoken rather than in visual recall. We interpret these findings in terms of the fact that mental representations of verbal information in Chinese are coded primarily in a visual manner, whereas verbal information in English is coded by primarily in a phonological manner. A key linguistic differences that would affect the decision to standardize or localize when transferring English brand name to Chinese brand name is the writing system. Prior Chinese brand naming research suggests that popular Chinese naming translations foreign companies adopt are phonetic, semantic, and phonosemantic translation. The phonetic translation refers to the speech sound that is produced, such as the pronunciation of the brand name. The semantic translation involves the actual meaning of and association made with the brand name. The phonosemantic translation preserves the sound of the brand name and brand meaning. Prior brand naming research has dealt with word-level analysis in examining English brand name that are desirable for improving memorability. We predict Chinese brand name suggestiveness with different translation methods lead to different levels of consumers' evaluations. This research investigates the structural linguistic characteristics of the Chinese language and its impact on the brand name evaluation. Otherwise purpose of this study is to examine the effect of brand concept on the evaluation of brand name. We also want to examine whether the evaluation is moderated by Chinese translation types. 178 Taiwanese participants were recruited for the research. The following findings are from the empirical analysis on the hypotheses established in this study. In the functional brand concept, participants in Chinese translation by semantic were likely to evaluate positively than Chinese translation by phonetic. On the contrary, in the symbolic brand concept condition, participants in Chinese translation by phonetic evaluated positively than by semantic. And then, we found Chinese translation by phonosemantic was most favorable evaluations regardless of brand concept. The implications of these findings are discussed for Chinese commonwealth marketers with respect to brand name strategies.   • Consumers focus on information about the symbolic meaning of a product for highly involved and emotional products (such as cosmetic products). This study examines the effectiveness of the congruence between cosmetics advertising image and self-image on consumer attitudes. In addition, this study examines two additional moderating effects, which are 'product type' and 'message type'. For the experiment, four advertizing type factorial designs were performed. A total of 320 undergraduate female students in Korea participated in the experiment. This study captured the subjective judgments of consumers on these three comparisons in terms of advertizing attitude, brand attitude, and purchase intention. The results are as follows: First, the greater the self-congruity on cosmetic advertising, then the greater the effectiveness on advertizing attitude. Second, the increased self-congruity on cosmetic advertising did not create greater effectiveness on brand attitude. Third, increased advertizing attitudes on the congruence between cosmetics advertising image and self-image increased the effectiveness on brand attitude. Fourth, increased advertizing attitudes on the congruence between cosmetics advertising image and self-image improved the effectiveness on purchase intention. Fifth, the greater the brand attitude (on the congruence between the cosmetics advertising image and the self-image produced)increased the effectiveness for purchase intention. The results show a significant moderating role of the product type. Marketers can use the results of this study to understand the market of cosmetic products for promotion.

  • In an extended enterprise, there is a shift to shared services, cosourcing and outsourcing, and extending out to partners, suppliers, and customers to accomplish business objectives more effectively. Along with this critical need, executives should be aware of the need to focus on optimizing the value of their information technology and reducing the related risks. So IT governance is critical, and many companies including spin-off venture are providing IT governance solution, but very little is known about brand management and marketing strategy of IT governance solution provider. The purpose of this study is to investigate brand positioning of IT governance solution company focusing on spin-off venture. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, brand management is needed in the spin-off venture. second, IT governance solution companies including spin-off venture must provide something more than functional value. That is, they actively seek to emotional or symbolic value for their customers.

A Study on Pursuing Benefit and Satisfaction at Casual and Official Wear of Fashion Outlet Users (패션아울렛 소비자의 캐주얼 및 정장 의류제품 추구혜택과 만족도 연구)

  • This study was to examine the factor structure of pursuing benefit and satisfaction at casual and official wear, to analyze the differences of pursuing benefit, satisfaction, and clothing purchase behavior among the consumer groups segmented by store pursuing benefits, and to provide useful information for establishment of marketing strategies. The subjects were 500 female consumers experienced in purchasing clothes at fashion outlet stores. A total of 500 questionnaires were analyzed with $X^2$-test, ANOVA, factor analysis and Duncan's multiple range test. The results were as follows: 1. Pursuing benefit and satisfaction at casual wear and official wear were composed of 5 factors. 2. Pursuing benefit and satisfaction at casual and offcial wear, and clothing purchasing behavior variables such as informants, frequency of purchase, shopping time, and average monthly expenditure on clothes were significantly different among the 3 segmented groups. Product pursuing group was shown to seek higher level of esthetic feeling, suitability for self image and body, fsshion and symbolic meaning of brand than other groups in casual and official wear and to be most satisfied at symbolic meaning of brand, social recognition, and practicality in casual wear of outlet and at suitability and social recognition in official wear of outlet. Store convenience pursuing group was shown to seek higher level of suitability for self image and body, quality, and practicality than other groups in casual and official wear and to be most satisfied at quality and practicality in casual wear of outlet and at practicality and suitability in of cial wear of outlet. Price pursuing group was shown to seek and to be most satisfied at practicality in casual and official wear of outlet.

The Effect of Consumption Values in Luxury Brands on Cult Intention : Focusing on the Mediating Effects of Positive Affect and Compatibility (럭셔리 브랜드 소비가치가 컬트 의도에 미치는 영향 : 긍정적 정서와 적합성의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • What is purchase motivation for luxury brands? and what kind of process through makes higher cult intention(i.e.,loyalty). How does consumption value affect loyalty? Theoretically, it was studied whether it could be explained. The luxury products and services were divided into categories and surveys were conducted at the national level. This research analyzed the influence of positive affect on cult intention by mediating luxury consumption value with S-O-R frame. The logic was developed with excitation transfer theory. Positive affect, compatibility mediating effect were investigated. Unlike the previous studies that have been recognized as important in terms of symbolic value in luxury brands, it was confirmed that experiential consumption value had the greatest impact. In addition, the influence of functional value and symbolic value had a significant effect. The effect of consumption value on cult intention was mediated by positive affect and compatibility. Therefore, emotional response can be seen as having an effect on cult intention through excitement transfer. These findings suggest that luxury brand marketers need to develop consumer values that can lead to arousal and positive emotional responses to suit consumer lifestyle. The research results are expected to contribute to the experience marketing and the hospitality service of luxury brands.

Relationship between Brand Personality and the Personality of Consumers, and its Application to Corporate Branding Strategy

  • Many consumers enjoy the challenge of purchasing a brand that matches well with their own values and personalities (for example, Ko et al., 2008; Ko et al., 2006). Therefore, the personalities of consumers can impact on the final selection of a brand and its brand personality in two ways: first, the consumers may incline to purchase a brand or a product that reflects their own personalities; second, consumers tend to choose a company that has similar brand personalities to those brands that are being promoted. Therefore, the objectives of this study are following: 1. Is there any empirical relationship between a consumer's personality and the personality of a brand that he or she chooses? 2. Can a corporate brand be differentiated by the brand personality? In short, consumers are more likely to hold favorable attitudes towards those brands that match their own personality and will most probably purchase those brands matching well with their personality. For example, Matzler et al. (2006) found that extraversion and openness were positively related to hedonic product value; and that the personality traits directly (openness) and indirectly (extraversion, via hedonic value) influenced brand effects, which in turn droved attitudinal and purchase loyalty. Based on the above discussion, the following hypotheses are proposed: Hypothesis 1: the personality of a consumer is related to the brand personality of a product/corporate that he/she purchases. Kuksov (2007) and Wernerfelt (1990) argued that brands as a symbolic language allowed consumers to communicate their types to each other and postulated that consumers had a certain value of communicating their types to each other. Therefore, how brand meanings are established, and how a firm communicate with consumers about the meanings of the brand are interesting topics for research (for example, Escalas and Bettman, 2005; McCracken, 1989; Moon, 2007). Hence, the following hypothesis is proposed: Hypothesis 2: A corporate brand identity is differentiated by the brand personality. And there are significant differences among companies. A questionnaire was developed for collecting empirical measures of the Big-Five personality traits and brand personality variables. A survey was conducted to the online access panel members through the Internet during December 2007 in Korea. In total, 500 respondents completed the questionnaire, and considered as useable. Personality constructs were measured using the Five-factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) scale and a total of 30 items were actually utilized. Brand personality was measured using the five-dimension scale developed by Aaker (1997). A total of 17 items were actually utilized. The seven-point Likert-type scale was the format of responses, for example, from 1 indicating strongly disagreed to 7 for strongly agreed. The Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) was used for an empirical testing of the model, and the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) was applied to estimate numerical values for the components in the model. To diagnose the presence of distribution problems in the data and to gauge their effects on the parameter estimates, bootstapping method was used. The results of the hypothesis-1 test empirically show that there exit certain causality relationship between a consumer's personality and the brand personality of the consumer's choice. Thus, the consumer's personality has an impact on consumer's final selection of a brand that has a brand personality matches well with their own personalities. In other words, the consumers are inclined to purchase a brand that reflects their own personalities and tend to choose a company that has similar brand personalities to those of the brand being promoted. The results of this study further suggest that certain dimensions of the brand personality cause consumers to have preference to certain (corporate) brands. For example, the conscientiousness, neuroticism, and extraversion of the consumer personality have positively related to a selection of "ruggedness" characteristics of the brand personality. Consumers who possess that personality dimension seek for matching with certain brand personality dimensions. Results of the hypothesis-2 test show that the average "ruggedness" attributes of the brand personality differ significantly among Korean automobile manufacturers. However, the result of ANOVA also indicates that there are no significant differences in the mean values among manufacturers for the "sophistication," "excitement," "competence" and "sincerity" attributes of the corporate brand personality. The tight link between what a firm is and its corporate brand means that there is far less room for marketing communications than there is with products and brands. Consequently, successful corporate brand strategies must position the organization within the boundaries of what is acceptable, while at the same time differentiating the organization from its competitors.
