  • The performance of pilot-symbol-assisted channel estimation widely used for OFDM systems is degraded due to the small number of pilot symbols used for higher transmission efficiency. In this paper, we propose a pilot symbol based channel estimation using cross-correlation to improve the estimation performance of the OFDM system with small number of pilot symbols. The proposed technique detects a data symbol using the channel estimated by the pilot symbol and estimates the channel using the estimated data symbol and the pilot symbol. It is shown by computer simulations that the proposed technique outperforms the conventional pilot symbol assisted estimation technique.

  • This paper proposes symbol decoding schemes combined with channel estimation techniques for coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (COFDM) systems in fading channels. sThe proposed symbol decoding schemes are consisted of a symbol decoding technique and channel estimation techniques. The symbol decoding based on Viterbi algorithm is achieved by matching the length of branch word from encoder trellis to the codeword length of symbol candidate on decoder trellis. Three combination schemes are described and their error performances are compared. The first scheme is to combine a symbol decoding technique with a training channel estimation technique. The second scheme joins a decision directed channel estimation technique to the first scheme. The time varying channel transfer functions are tracked by the decision directed channel estimation technique and the channel transfer functions used in the symbol decoder are updated every COFDM symbol. Finally, In order to reduce the effect of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) between adjacent subchannels, deinterleaved average channel estimation technique is combined. The error performances of the three schemes are significantly improved being compared with that of zero forcing equalizing schemes.

  • In this paper, we propose a new symbol offset estimation technique for an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless LAN. When both inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-channel interference (ICI) do not exist in an OFDM symbol, symbol offsets cause circular shifts in the estimated channel impulse response (CIR) by the amount of symbol offset. Also, the power delay profile of a typical multipath wireless channel can be modeled by exponentially decaying function, and most energy of multipath channel is concentrated at the beginning part of the CIR. Based on these properties, the proposed symbol offset estimation technique estimates the CIR, which is circularly shifted by the amount of symbol offset, and then calculates the partial mean power from the estimated impulse response by using a moving window with a finite length. And, symbol offset can be estimated from the index of a moving window having the maximal partial mean power. The proposed technique can reduce noise effect in the process of the CIR estimation, and remove ISI and ICI using repetitive training symbol structure in time-domain for minimum training overhead. The performances of the proposed symbol offset estimation technique in typical indoor channels are demonstrated by computer simulation.

  • In this paper, we present the joint symbol detection and channel estimation for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system in fading channels. The proposed methods are based on decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE) method and their symbol detection is achieved by using Viterbi algorithm. This Viterbi decision-directed channel estimation (VDDCE) method tracks time-varying channels and detects a maximum likelihood symbol sequence. Recursive Viterbi decision-directed channel estimation (RVDDCE) method based on VDDCE method is proposed to shorten the detecting depth. In this method, channel estimate and Viterbi processing are recursively performed every interval of training symbol. Also, average chann'el estimation (ACE) technique to reduce the effect of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is applied VDDCE method and RVDDCE method. These proposed methods arc demonstrated by computer simulation.

  • In this paper, we analyze channel estimation algorithms in a RAKE receiver with MRC. There are 3 popular channel estimation algorithms, which are WMSA(Weighted Multi-Slot Averaging) algorithm, EGE(Equal Gain Estimation) algorithm, SSE(Symbol-to-Symbol Estimation) algorithm. We analyze asynchronous IMT-2000(3GPP) which employ 3 different channel estimation algorithms by HP-ADS(Advanced Design System) simulation tool. We used lakes fading channel model for the analysis. from simulation results, we could observe that the performance of WMSA algorithm is better than others in low Doppler effect(3Km/h). However, in the case of high Doppler effect(120km1h), the EGE algorithm is more efficient. In this case the simple estimator with EGE algorithm seems to be more useful.

  • Wireless LAN system is evolving toward high-speed data transmission and more accurate channel estimation is necessarily required to improve communication performance. The PLCP preamble field in IEEE 802.11 based wireless MODEM consists of ten short symbols and two long symbols and is used for synchronization and channel estimation. The existing least square (LS) channel estimation is based on only two long training symbols. After estimating channel response separately by using each long training symbol, the final channel estimation is obtained by the average of each estimation. In this paper, a new channel estimation algorithm is presented to improve the performance of the existing LS channel estimation algorithm. From the fact that the short training symbol consists of 12 non-zero subcarriers, it gives us a clue of being able to additionally estimate at least one fourth of channel coefficients. The new LS algorithm performs channel estimation based on both two long training symbols and a short training symbol. The proposed LS algorithm shows a little bit performance improvement over the existing LS estimation and it will be able to be applied to the IEEE 802.11p WAVE system.

  • In this paper, a blind symbol timing offset (STO) estimation method is proposed for offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK) modulated signals, which also works for other linearly modulated signals (LMS) such as binary-PSK, QPSK, 𝜋/4-QPSK, and minimum-shift keying. There are various methods available for blind STO estimation of LMS; however, none work in the case of OQPSK modulated signals. The popular cyclic correlation method fails to estimate STO for OQPSK signals, as the offset present between the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components causes the cyclic peak to disappear at the symbol rate frequency. In the proposed method, a set of close and approximate offsets is used to compensate the offset between the I and Q components of the received OQPSK signal. The STO in the time domain is represented as a phase in the cyclic frequency domain. The STO is therefore calculated by obtaining the phase of the cyclic peak at the symbol rate frequency. The method is validated through extensive theoretical study, simulation, and testbed implementation. The proposed estimation method exhibits robust performance in the presence of unknown carrier phase offset and frequency offset.

  • This paper proposed symbol rate method which does not require a priori knowledge on the symbol rate and simplified modulation identification method to classify BPSK, QPSK, 8PSK signal. In order to estimate the unknown symbol rate, sliding FFT and simple moving average to estimate the spectrum of the signals is utilized, and sliding window and decimation, LPF blcok to estimate the proper symbol rate is used. Although conventional modulation ID method must use SNR value as the test statistics, the receiver cannot estimate the SNR value since the receiver cannot know the modulation type at the start of communication, and bit resolution is high due to using nonlinear function such as log, cosh. Therefore, we proposed the simplified fixed SNR value method. The performance of symbol rate estimation and modulation ID is shown using Monte Carlo computer simulation. This paper show that symbol rate estimation also has good performance in low SNR, and proposed simplified fixed SNR method has almost equivalent performance compared to conventional method.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid symbol offset estimation algorithm for MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) OFDM system. As MIMO OFDM systems are multiple transmitter and receiver antenna systems, apart from SISO(Single Input Single Output) system, it is possible to use several combining techniques which are used in multiple receive antenna system. In this paper, we propose hybrid symbol offset estimation algorithms using combining techniques in multiple receive antenna systems, simulate and show the performances in MIMO system environments. The proposed equal gain combining correlation algorithm has better performance 1.8 times in searching the ideal symbol offset rather than the conventional early symbol offset algorithm in severe ISI channel.

  • CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) mobile communication systems require accurate channel estimation in the receiver to compensate the fading distortions. Instantaneous channel estimates are obtained by dividing the received symbol by the transmitted symbol and then refined by filtering to reduce the estimation variance. In the channel estimation filter, the determination of the filter size is a very important task which greatly affects the estimation quality. While conventional methods usually use only velocity estimators to determine the channel estimation filter size, this paper proposes a filter size determination method for decision-directed channel estimators considering the symbol error rate and the signal-to-noise ratio in addition to the velocity of the mobile station. This paper shows that the symbol error rate and the signal-to-noise ratio are important factors for the determination of the channel estimation filter size.
