Methods for symbol-by-symbol channel feedback and adaptation of symbol durations have been recently proposed. In this paper, we quantitatively analyze the gain in error-constrained data throughput due to such an extremely rapid adaptation of symbol durations to fast-time-varying channels. The results show that a symbol-by-symbol adaptation can achieve a throughput gain by orders of magnitude over a frame-by-frame adaptation.
In this paper, we present symbol detection methods for decision feedback equalizers (DFE) in trellis coded modulation systems. The proposed symbol detectors improve symbol error rate (SER) by exploiting the coding structure of trellis coded modulation (TCM). For example, for 8-PAM signals the achieved SER with the proposed detection scheme is improved to $2{\times}10^{-5}$ from $2.5{\times}10^{-2}$ of the conventional symbol-by-symbol detector under AWGN channel at 20dB SNR. This SER improvements mitigate error propagation of DFE.and produces significant over-all SER improvement for under multipath channels (for example, from 0.26 to 0.01 and 0.005 under a severe multipath channel 20dB SNR as shown in the simulation result of this paper).
In this letter, closed-form approximations for outage probability and symbol error rate are presented for a selective decode-and-forward relay network with partial channel information. An independent but not identically distributed Rayleigh fading environment is considered. Numerical and simulated results demonstrate the validity of the analytical results.

Timing recovery loop composed of the Timing Error Detector(TED), loop filter and resampler is widely used for the timing synchronization in MQASK receivers. Since TED is sensitive to the delay between the symbol period of the signal and sampling period, the output is averaged out when the symbol rate and sampling rate are quite different the recovery loop cannot work at all. This paper presents a sampling frequency discriminator (SRD), which detects the frequency offset of the sampling clock to the symbol clock of the MQASK data transmitted. Employing the SRD, the closed loop timing recovery scheme performs the frequency-aided timing acquisition and achieve the synchronization at extremely high sampling frequency offset, which can be used in variable symbol rate MQASK receivers.

In the conventional multi-user superposition transmission, the power allocation coefficients of data symbols and the received signal processing of users are determined by the condition of instantaneous channel powers. However, the use of instantaneous channel powers can increase the system complexity. Hence, we consider fixed multi-user superposition transmission using average channel powers. The fixed multi-user superposition transmission can reduce the system complexity because it uses the condition of average channel powers that slowly change over time in order to decide the power allocation coefficients and the received signal processing. In this paper, we analyze the average symbol error rate for the fixed multi-user superposition transmission. In particular, an expression for the average symbol error rate of M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation is derived assuming Rayleigh fading channels. In addition, through the numerical results, we show that the conventional and fixed multi-user superposition transmissions achieve the similar average symbol error rate performances at the user in the severe channel condition.

Powerful error control and increase in the number of bits per symbol should be provided for future high-quality communication systems. Each message bit may have different importance in multimedia data. Hence, UEP(unequal error protection) may be more efficient than EEP(equal error protection) in such cases. And the LDPC(low-density parity-check) code shows near Shannon limit error correcting performance. Therefore, the effect of UEP with LDPC codes is analyzed for high-quality message data in this paper. The relationship among MSE(mean square error), BER(bit error rate) and the number of bits per symbol is analyzed theoretically. Then, total message bits in a symbol are classified into two groups according to importance to prove the relationship by simulation. And the UEP performance is obtained by simulation according to the number of message bits in each group with the constraint of a fixed total code rate and codeword length. As results, the effect of UEP with the LDPC codes is analyzed by MSE according to the number of bits per symbol, the ratio of the message bits, and protection level of the classified groups.

In this paper, we consider the performance evaluation of space time block code (STBC)) with coordinate interleaved orthogonal design (CIOD) over time selective channel. In case of quasi static channel, STBC-CIOD satisfies full rate and full diversity (FRFD) property with the single symbol decoding. However in the time selective channel, the symbol interference degrades the system performance when we employ the single symbol decoding. We derive the union bound of the symbol error probability by evaluating the pairwise error probability in the first order Markov channel. We also present simulation results of STBC-CIOD with QPSK.

Underwater Acoustic Channels (UAC) have inherent sparse characteristics. The traditional adaptive equalization techniques do not utilize this feature to improve the performance. In this paper we consider the Variable Adaptive Subgradient Projection (V-ASPM) method to derive a new sparse equalization algorithm based on the Minimum Symbol Error Rate (MSER) criterion. Compared with the original MSER algorithm, our proposed scheme adds sparse matrix to the iterative formula, which can assign independent step-sizes to the equalizer taps. How to obtain such proper sparse matrix is also analyzed. On this basis, the selection scheme of the sparse matrix is obtained by combining the variable step-sizes and equalizer sparsity measure. We call the new algorithm Sparse-Control Proportional-MSER (SC-PMSER) equalizer. Finally, the proposed SC-PMSER equalizer is embedded into a turbo receiver, which perform turbo decoding, Digital Phase-Locked Loop (DPLL), time-reversal receiving and multi-reception diversity. Simulation and real-field experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in convergence speed and Bit Error Rate (BER).

In this paper, we propose the heuristic signal grouping algorithm to estimate channel state value over full blind communication situation which means that there is no information about the modulation scheme and the channel state information between the transmitter and the receiver. Hereafter, using the constellation rotation method and the probability density function(pdf) the modulation scheme is determined to perform automatic modulation classification(AMC). Furthermore, the modulation type and a channel state value estimation capability is evaluated by comparing the proposed scheme with other conventional techniques from the simulation results in terms of the symbol error rate(SER) and the root mean square error (RMSE).

This paper provides closed form expressions for the evaluation of the end-to-end outage probability, symbol error rate, bit error rate and average capacity of the partial-based Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay selection scheme with an arbitrary number of relays. In a comparison with the performance of systems that exploit Amplify-and-Forward (AF), it can be seen that the performance of our proposed protocol converges to that of partial-based AF relay selection in high SNR regime. We also perform Monte-Carlo simulations to validate the analysis.
