  • Objective: Highly sensitive haptoglobin measurement should be used in neonates because the haptoglobin concentration in neonates is lower than that of adults. The aim of this study was to establish the reference values of haptoglobin levels in the cord blood of uninfected neonates. Methods: The cord blood of 29 preterm and 51 term babies was collected, and data from the mother and the newborn were recorded. The haptoglobin concentrations of 80 cord blood samples were simultaneously measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA; Assaypro, St Charles, MO, USA) and immunoturbidimetry assay (Roche Diagnostics, Basel, Switzerland). C-reactive protein (CRP) was also measured by immunoturbidimetry assay (Roche Diagnostics, Switzerland). Results: Mean values of CRP and ELISA haptoglobin were not significantly different between preterm and term babies. The 2.5 percentile and 97.5 percentile values of ELISA haptoglobin concentration were as follows: 80 neonates, 0.01 mg/dL and 0.59 mg/dL; 29 preterm babies, 0.08 mg/dL and 0.18 mg/dL; and 51 term babies, 0.07 mg/dL and 0.23 mg/dL. There were no differences in ELISA haptoglobin concentration according to maternal underlying diseases, delivery method, usage of antibiotics or steroids before delivery, gestational age, gender of baby, or twin gestation. Conclusion: A highly sensitive haptoglobin method should be used to determine the haptoglobin concentration in Korean newborns because the reference values of cord blood haptoglobin concentration in Korean newborns are less than the lower detection limit for commonly used immunoturbidimetric haptoglobin measurement methods.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the shaping ability of the three different Ni-Ti file systems used by undergraduate students. Fifty undergraduate students prepared 150 simulated curved root canals in resin blocks with three Ni-Ti file systems - $ProFile^{(R)}$ (PF), Manual $ProTaper^{(R)}$ (MPT), Rotary $ProTaper^{(R)}$ (RPT). Every student prepared 3 simulated root canals with each system respectively. After root canal preparation, the Ni-Ti files were evaluated for distortion or breakage Assessments were made according to the presence of various types of canal aberrations. The pre- and post-instrumented canal images were attained and superimposed. The instrumented root canal width were measured and calculated for the net transportation (deviation) and the centering ratio. Under the condition of this study, both $ProTaper^{(R)}$ systems allowed significantly more removal of root canal wall than the $ProFile^{(R)}$ system. In the important other aspects such as the centering ratio, there was no significant differences between the systems. Novice dental students were able to prepare curved root canals with any kinds of Ni-Ti file systems with little aberration and great conservation of tooth structure. Students want to learn effective methods and at the same time simple rotary procedures. The rotary $ProTaper^{(R)}$ systems were one of the most compatible to these students from the point of view of cutting ability The $ProFile^{(R)}$ system was also compatible in safe and gentle shaping.

  • The health risks from the magnetic fields exposure have been brought out difficulties in the construction of transformer substation. According to several epidemiologic studies and the relevant international organizations, magnetic fields should not exceed the exposure limits of 3mG for the people living near electric power lines. The rigid regulation of the exposure levels for the elementary school and residental areas has been established already in Switzerland and Italy. Since 1998, the environmental impact assessment system in Korea has been reviewed for power-frequency magnetic field by precautionary policies. In this study, the possible application of Prior Environmental Performance Review System for the transformer substation was reviewed from the points of the properties of the powerfrequency magnetic fields. The ranges and survey methods of the assessment for the transformer substation were proposed. The ranges of magnetic fields was between 300m to 500m for the 345kV transformer substation. It is necessary to develop further specific assessment methods for various high-voltage transformer substations.

  • This paper analyses the economics of grid-connected photovoltaic systems. With the 2003 cost of photovoltaic systems, under prevailing capital market conditions, with a system lifetime of 30 years, and under the best climatic conditions, it appears that the cost of production of grid-connected electricity could be of 0.21 US $/kWh, and under medium climatic conditions, European locations, Switzerland, Japan and South Korean could be of 0.28$/kWh. If the lifetime if the system goes up, due to future technological improvements, to a very large value such as 50 years, these costs can be lowered by 10-20%. Competitiveness of grid-connected photovoltaic electricity, while it still cannot be taken for granted, is a possibility, especially if major technological advances further lowers the costs of photo cells and increases their lifetimes.

  • The magnetic anisotropy effects of peptide group in structured protein on proton chemical shift have been investigated using trialanine modeling. The structure dependent part of chemical shift of C${\alpha}$H of the second amino acid residue was assumed to come purely from the magnetic anisotropy effects of C=O and C-N bonds of peptide in the direct neighborhood and thus to be dependent on and $\psi$ angle of this dipeptide. A set of dipeptide models with different and $\psi$angles were generated and from these models the chemical shift values were calculated using known algorithm to emphasize the role of parameters used in the equation. Comparison of sets of different parameters resulted in an optimized parameters which could reproduce the statistical chemical shift values observed in proteins with respect ot the secondary conformation.

  • The solution structure of bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor(BPTI) has been refined by NMR chemical shift data of C${\alpha}$H using classical molecular dynamics simulation. The structure dependent part of the observable chemical shift was modeled by ring current effect, magnetic anisotropy effect from the nearby groups, whereas the structure independent part was replaced with the random coil shift. A new harmonic function derived from the differences between the observed and calculated chemical shifts was added into physical force field as an pseudo potential energy term with force constant of 250 kJmol-1 ppm-2. During the 1.5 ns molecular dynamics simulation with chemical shift restraints BPTI has accessed different conformation space compared to crystal and NOE driven structure.
