  • We proposed a novel segment type switched reluctance motor (SRM) in which the segment core was embedded in aluminum (conductive metal) rotor block in order to increase the mechanical strength and easy manufacturing as well as to improve the performance characteristics and reduce the vibration and acoustic noise. This paper explains the operation principle and the drive system and shows the experimental results in comparison with the VR type SRM.

  • The single-phase switched reluctance motor(SRM) has only one inductance variation and the positive torque is generated in the restricted section. So, it cannot be started by itself. To solve this problem, many researchers have addressed the several starting method for the single-phase SRM. This paper is focused on the torque characteristics of the single-phase SRM according to starting method. The four major starting method - permanent magnet, saturable stator pole, to grade the rotor, stepped rotor pole - is selected to analyze the torque characteristics. The analysis model of each starting method is designed to changed the pole shape or inserting other material in the basic model. The torque characteristics of each analysis model is obtained by using FEM analysis. The FEM analysis is performed at incremental rotor positions over half inductance cycle in any one pole with 250AT, 500AT, 750AT. The distortion factor of each analysis model is analyzed through the FFT to compare the distortion between basic model and four analysis model.

  • Switched reluctance motor(SRM) has the advantages of simple structure, low rotor inertia and high efficiency. However, position sensor is essential in SRM in order to synchronize the phase excitation to the rotor Position. The Position sensors increase the cost of drive system and tend to reduce system reliability. This paper investigates the speed control of sensorless SRM in which the Phase current and change rate are utilized in position decision, and the period of dwell angle is variable for speed control. The proposed system consists of Position decision circuit, speed controller, digital logic commutator, switching angle controller and inverter The performances in the proposed system are verified through the experiment.

  • In this paper a new dynamoelectric winch system is introduced which is widely applied in shipping. building, architecture and so on. Generally in the winch system the squirrel cage induction motor is used as prime mover and line voltage is directly applied to the induction motor during operation. So it is difficult to obtain the smoothing revolution. because of variation of the weight of cargo and system operating method. Based on above reasons, the switched reluctance motor (SRM) is proposed to replace the induction motor because of more reliable mechanical structure, better traction characteristic and higher efficiency compared to induction motor. And in order to solve smoothing revolution problem, instantaneous torque control method based on torque sharing function (TSF) is used. Finally the validity of the proposed method is verified through the simulation and experimental results.

  • A sensorless control scheme for the switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive at speed control is presented in this paper. In this paper proposes a very simple method to estimate the rotor position of a switched reluctance motor. By on-line estimating the self-inductance of the motor, the rotor position of the SR motor is obtained, and a closed-loop drive system can be achieved. Proposed methods can easy implement to application with sensorless SR motor drive system. SR motor simulation executed with self inductance estimation and result represented.

  • This paper presents a high efficiency direct instantaneous torque control (DITC) of Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) based on the nonlinear model. The DITC method can reduce the high inherent torque ripple of SRM drive system, but drive efficiency is somewhat low due to the high current and switching loss during commutations. In order to reduce a torque ripple, a fast torque reference trajectory is selected at every instantaneous rotor position. Based on the nonlinear model of SRM, the developing torque by one phase is fixed and the other phase is regulated for minimum switchings of phase switch and variation of torque. The switching during commutation can be reduced and fast commutation can be obtained in the proposed method. As a result, drive efficiency could be improved as well as torque ripple reduction. The validity of proposed method is verified by computer simulations and comparative experiments.

  • In automobile, the introduction of electronically commutated motors has been accompanied by a proliferation of electronic devices. With this proliferation of electronic devices, an emphasis has been placed on EMC issues. This paper is proposed to use SRM as a radiator cooling fan in automotive applications. To drive SRM, Energy efficient C-dump converter is applied. Energy efficient C-dump converter, derived from the conventional C-dump converter, is proposed as a switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive for automotive engine cooling application. It is verified more efficient than other converters through simulation and experiments. And also SRM is valid for automotive applications that have strict EMC standards. Simulation and experimental results obtained on a laboratory prototype are finally presented to evaluate the performance.

  • In this paper, 4-phase switched reluctance motor(SRM) with 8-stator and 6-rotor pole structure is proposed for a high speed fan with a low voltage. The air blower has unidirectional rotation characteristics and requires a low torque ripple and noise as well as high efficiency. To achieve the requirements, voltage and current according to loading condition of limited specification is considered. Design process is to select the bore diameter, pole arc, york of stator and rotor to get a high torque and efficiency. To verify the validity of the proposed structure, finite element method(FEM) is employed to get the performances. And the converter for the proposed SRM is employed a 1.5q power converter for cost effectiveness. Prototype SRM is manufactured and tested, and the test results show this design is within the specification and good for the air blower applications.

  • This paper discusses study of torque ripple minimization employing an improved TDF(torque distribution function)-based instantaneous torque control to reduce acoustic noise and vibration problem of the SRM. As the flux linkage of the SRM is a nonlinear function of phase current and rotor position, design of optimal controller for the SRM is quite complicated. Hence, an accurate mathematical model considering the nonlinearity of the SRM is required. An improved TDF based torque control has been proposed in order to reduce the toque ripple at high speed operation. Dynamic simulation using Matlab/Simulink as well as Finite Element Analysis is presented. A prototype SRM for electric vehicle traction has been manufactured to validate the experimental results comparing the dynamic simulation results.

  • Switched reluctance motor (SRM) has some advantages such as low cost, high torque density etc. However SRM has inevitably high torque ripple due to the double salient structure. To apply SRM to industrial field, we have to minimize torque ripple, which is the weak-Point of SRM. This paper presents optimal design process of SRM using numerical method such as 2D finite element method (FEM) and 3D equivalent magnetic circuit network method (EMCNM). The electrical and geometrical design parameters have been adopted as 2D design variables. The overhang structure of rotor has been also adopted as 3D design variable. From this work, we can obtain the optimal design, which minimize the torque ripple and maximize energy conversion loop.
