This paper presents analysis of Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) using Geometry Based Analytical Model (GBAM), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Fourier Series Model (FSM) with curve fitting technique. Further a Transient Analysis (TA) technique is proposed to corroborate the analysis. The main aim of this paper is to give in depth procedure in developing a Geometry Based Analytical Model of Switched Reluctance Machine which is very accurate and simple. The GBAM is developed for the specifications obtained from the manufacturer and magnetizing characteristic of the material used for the construction. Precise values of the parameters like Magneto Motive Force (MMF), flux linkage, inductance and torque are obtained for various rotor positions taking into account the Fringing Effect (FE). The FEA model is developed using MagNet7.1.1 for the same machine geometry used in GBAM and the results are compared with GBAM. Further another analytical model called Fourier Series Model is developed to justify the accuracy of the results obtained by the methods GBAM and FEA model. A prototype of microcontroller based SRM drive system is constructed for validating the analysis and the results are reported.
Recently, SRMs are used in automobiles for power assistant steering, accessory motion control and traction drives. Especially in the motion control and traction drives, safety and efficiency are of paramount importance. The paper describes the essential elements faced in designing and constructing driving circuits for a switched reluctance motor for automobiles. An important factor in the selection of a motor and a drive for industrial application is the cost. The switched reluctance motor(SRM) is a simple, low-cost, and robust motor suitable for variable-speed as well as servo-type applications. With relatively simple converter and control requirements, the SRM is gaining an increasing attention in the drive industry. This paper presents a modified C-dump converter for Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) machine application in the cooling system of automobiles. The experiments are performed to verify the capability of applicate control method on 6/4 salient type SRM.
The single phase switched reluctance motor has been studied and developed actively in the various applications with several kinds and forms because of the developments of the design technique by using the computer and of the driving technique power electronic technology, which has the merits of a simple and robust structure, and first of all reducing the number of the switching devices in comparison with poly phase switched reluctance motor. And also, the studies are making progess to substitute the switched reluctance motor for single phase induction motor. In the previous studies, the single phase switched reluctance motor for the drive of blower is designed with the design theory of the conventional rotating electric machine and poly phase switched reluctance motor. In this paper, we intend to select the optimal pole arc and pole pitch ratio by the FEM analysis, because the pole arc and pole pitch are very important factor to determine the characteristics of switched reluctance motor.

A novel kind of switched reluctance motor (SRM) with short flux path is proposed in this paper. Phase excitation in the SRM gives short flux paths, hence reducing the magnetomotive force required to drive the machine, resulting in significant reduction of copper wire and core losses compared to the typical SRM with diametric circulation of magnetic flux. To verify the performance, the characteristics analysis of a double-stator SRM, a 6/5 SRM with C-core structure, and a 4/5 two-phase SRM, which all have short flux paths, and a comparison with conventional SR motors are executed. The comparison demonstrates that the proposed motor offers some advantages in terms of torque and efficiency.

This paper attempts to employ and investigate neural based approaches as interpolation tools for modeling of Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) drive. Precise modeling of SRM is essential to analyse the performance of control strategies for variable speed drive application. In this work the suitability of Generalized Regression Neural Network (GRNN) and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) in addition to conventional neural network are explored for improving the modeling accuracy of SRM. The neural structures are trained with the data obtained by modeling of SRM using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and the trained neural network is incorporated in the model of SRM drive. The results signify the modeling accuracy with GRNN model. The closed loop drive simulation is performed in MATLAB/Simulink environment and the closeness of the results in comparison with the experimental prototype validates the modeling approach.

This paper presents a regenerative braking control scheme for Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) drive in Electric Vehicles (EVs). The main purpose is to maximize the recovered energy during battery charging by taking into account the nonlinear physical characteristics of the Switched Reluctance Machine. The proposed regenerative braking method employs the back-EMF in the generation process as a complicated position-dependent voltage source. The proposed maximum power recovery (MPR) operation of the regenerative braking is first based on the maximization of the extracted power from the machine and then the maximization of the power transferred to the battery. The maximum power extraction (MPE) from SRM is based on maximizing the energy conversion ratio by the calculation of the optimum PWM switching duty cycle, turn-on, and turn-off angles. By using the impedance matching theorem that allows the maximum power transfer (MPT) of the MPE, the proposed MPR is achieved. The parametric averaged value modeling of the machine phase currents in the chopping control mode is used for MPR realization. By following this model, a nonlinear equivalent input resistance is derived for the battery internal resistance matching. The effectiveness of the proposed regenerative braking method is demonstrated through simulation results and experimental implementation.
In this paper the new converter topology using single-Phase full bridge inverter for the switched reluctance motor drives is proposed. The proposed SRM drives are supplied by the AC pulse voltage source, while the conventional drives are supplied by the DC voltage source. Speed of the SRM is controlled by adjusting the frequency and the multitude of output current of inverter. The SRM using the proposed converter reduces the switching loss and the machine core loss, and has ability to pre-regulate the input voltage. The total number of power switches become fewer than another topology as a number of stator poles becomes more. Power circuit of an inverter is simpler and its volume is smaller because the module device involving several switches is used as an inverter.
Low cost motor drives are being sought for high volume energy efficient home appliances. Key to the realization of such low cost motor drives is to reduce the power electronic converter in terms of its components, particularly the active devices, finding the motor with least complexity for manufacturing and a controller that could extract the desired performance from the machine and converter combination. These and other factors such as self-starting, speed control over a wide range and most of all the crowning aspect of a four quadrant operation with bare minimum number of controllable switch (or switches) remain as formidable challenges for low cost motor drive realization. In this paper, a four quadrant switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive with only one controllable switch is realized by using a two-phase machine. The theory and operation of the proposed four-quadrant SRM drive with the proposed control algorithm for its realization are described. The motor drive is modeled, simulated and analyzed to verify its feasibility for self-starting, speed control and for four quadrant operation and the simulation results are presented. Experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed control algorithm for four quadrant control of the SRM drive. The focus of the paper is mainly directed toward the control algorithm for realizing the four-quadrant operation of the two-phase SRM drive with a single controllable switch converter.
The Theory of operation of switched reluctance motors (SRM) depends on the reluctance torque, where energy is transferred to stator winding only. Although its construction is simple, the electrical design is complex, due to the switching configuration needed to deliver power to stator coils. However, because of the nonlinearly of magnetic circuit, SRM has torque ripple. This paper proposes a new strategy to drive SRM from a single-phase AC supply. Each stator winding is connected to AC-DC or AC-AC converters, which is called branch. All branches are connected in parallel to a single-phase AC supply. A shaft encoder allows current production in stator winding during the positive torque production region and terminates it during the negative torque production region. A magnetic flux is produced between stator poles when current is supplied from AC supply to stator coil and repeats many cycles as long as the rate of change of stator inductance is positive. Different possibilities for the configurations of AC-AC or AC-DC converters are introduced to drive SRM from the single-phase AC supply. A case study is presented for a SRM fed from AC supply through semi-controlled AC-DC converter is presented. A simulation model is introduced and verified by experimental rig for two-phase SRM.
