The core/shell type structure of the highly crosslinked poly(glycidylmetharylate-co-divinylbenzene) microspheres prepared in the precipitation polymerization in acetonitrile was thoroughly verified by means of swelling, $^1H$ NMR, XPS, TEM and TGA measurements. In the XPS measurement, the higher the GMA content, the higher the oxygen content was observed, implying that the higher content of GMA is observed in the particle surface. The further verification of the core/shell structure of the poly(GMA-co-DVB) particles was carried out using $^1H$ NMR and TEM techniques, resulting in the poly(GMA-co-DVB) particles with the GMA rich-phase and DVB rich-phase. In overall, the poly(GMA-co-DVB) microspheres consist of a highly crosslinked DVB rich-phase in the core and slightly or non-crosslinked GMA rich-phase in the shell part due to the different reaction ratios between two monomers and self-crosslinking density of DVB.
As many crude drugs are used in the oriental medical field problems on the side effects of these drugs come to the front. To conduct delayed-type hypersensitivity we selected 29 kinds of drugs used frequently for therapeutic agents in oriental medical hospitals (Table I). The cell-mediated immune response was evaluated by measuring the foot pad swelling reaction and humoral immune response by measuring the antibody formation to these crude drugs. Mice were given these drugs intraperioneally for sensitization and challenged with same drug as used for sensitization respectively by intral dermal injection on the left and righ hind foot pad 4 days after senstization and then the foot pads were measured with the dial micrometer. The results were as follow; 1) Gentianae Scabrae Radix, Arecae Semen, Corydalis Tuber, and Paeoniae Radix were significant as delayed-type hypersensitivity inducers. 2) None of the crude drugs tested had effect on the induction of humoral immune response.
During the screening program to discover antiatopic agents from herbal formulas, we investigated the inhibitory effect of Hwangryunhaedoktang (HT) on passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and oxazolone-induced mouse ear dermatitis. HT significantly inhibited PCA reaction in mice at doses of 50 and 200 mg/kg with inhibitory activity of 31 and 53%, respectively. HT at concentration of 0.05 and 0.1% inhibited ear swelling by 23 and 46% at 16 days in oxazolone-induced mouse ear dermatitis. Both HT with anti without human intestinal microflora showed potent inhibitory activity on the ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase release induced by IgE. Based on these findings, HT may be a usable agent for skin disorder contact dermatitis.

Methacrylic acid was graft polymerized with benzoyl peroxide in itiator onto the commercial PET film. Graft polymerization was carried out in emulsion, which consisted of BPO (1), chlorobenzene(8) as swelling agent, tween 80(1) and sodium lauryl sulfate(1) as emulsifier and water(1,000). Original PET film has poor reactivities and, so the film preswdled with benzyl alcohol($150^{\circ}C$, 1hr) was also examined. The graft yield of PET film was increased with reaction temperature and monomer concentration. The graft yield of preswelled PET film was higher than that of no-treated PET film. Moisture regain was linearly increased with graft yield. DSC thermodiagram showed the Tm of grafted PET film was same as that of original PET film. Grafted PET film was dyed with methylene blue solution. The photograph of the cross section showed that grafting was occured not at the center but near surfaces.
The physical properties and drug release behaviours of polyethylene glycol grafted poly ${\gamma}$- benzyl L-glutamate (PEG- g- PBLG), polyethylene glycol crosslinked poly ${\gamma}$-benzyl L- glutamate(PEG-c-PBLG), and PBLG homopolymer are compared. PBLG containing PEG segements showed higher wettability and larger enlongation than PBLG homoplymer, but lower elastic modulus. The release rate of rhodamine is strongly influenced by the wettability of the polymer. Rhodamine is more rapidly released from PEG-c-PBLG membrane having a larger water contact angle than from other polymer having a lower water contact angle. The surfaces of PBLG derivative membranes are modified by substitution reaction using hydroxyalkylamine. The resulting polymer membranes showed hider wettability and swelling ratio than virgin membranes.

IPN (Interpenetrating Polymer Network) is a mixture of two or more crosslinked polymers with physically interlocked network structures between the component polymers. IPN can be classified as an alloy of thermosets and has the characteristics of thermosets such as the thermal resistance and chemical resistance and also has the characteristics of polymer alloys with enhanced impact resistance and amphoteric properties. The physical interlocking during the synthesis restricts the phase separation of the component polymer with chemical pinning process, thus the control of morphology is possible through variations of the reaction temperature and pressure, catalyst concentration and crosslinking agent concentration. Finely dispersed domain structure can be obtained through IPN synthesis of polymer components with gross immiscibility. In membrane applications, particularly for the separation of liquid mixtures, crosslinked polymer component with specific affinity to the permeate is needed. With the presence of the permeant-inert polymer component, the mechanical strength and the selectivity of the membranes are enhanced by restricting the swelling of the transporting polymer component networks.
The development of high tenacity, high modulus monofilaments from Polypropylene/Clay nanocomposite has been investigated. Pure sodium montmorillonite nanoclay was modified using hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTAB) via an ion exchange reaction. Pure and modified clay were characterized through X-ray diffraction, FTIR and TGA. The modified clay was melt blended with polypropylene (PP) in presence of a swelling agent. Composite filaments from PP/Clay nanocomposite were prepared at different weight percentages of nanoclay and the spinning and drawing conditions were optimized. The filaments were characterized for their mechanical, morphological and thermal properties. The composite PP filaments with modified clay showed improved tensile strength, modulus and reduced elongation at break. The composite filaments with unmodified clay did not show any improvement in tensile strength but the modulus improved. The sharp and narrow X-ray diffraction peaks of PP/nanoclay composite filaments indicate increase in crystallinity in presence of modified clay at small loadings (0.5 %). The improved thermal stability was observed in filaments with modified as well as unmodified clays.
There are around 6700 millions tons of perlite reserves in the world. Although perlite possesses pozzolanic properties, it has not been so far used in soil stabilization. In this study, stabilization with perlite and lime of an expansive clayey soil containing smectite group clay minerals such as montmorillonite and nontronite was investigated experimentally. For this purpose, test mixtures were prepared with 8% of lime (optimum lime ratio of the soil) and without lime by adding 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% of perlite. Geotechnical properties such as compaction, Atterberg limits, swelling, unconfined compressive strength of the mixtures and changes of these properties depending on perlite ratio and time were determined. The test results show that stabilization of the soil with combination of perlite and lime improves the geotechnical properties better than those of perlite or lime alone. This experimental study unveils that the mixture containing 30% perlite and 8% lime is the optimum solution in stabilization of the soil with respect to strength.
Application of polyacrylamide gel (PAG) instead of agar to solid cultures of Streptomyces spp. was studied. The improved media were prepared by 1) gelling 20 ml of 5% acrylamide in a glass petri dish at room temperature, 2) washing by running water for more than 8 hr to remove residual reaction reagents, 3) drying at 5$0^{\circ}C$ for 12 hr to make a gel film, 4) autoclaving at 121$^{\circ}C$ for 15 min, and 5) swelling gel for about 4 hr by adding sterile liquid medium. In PAG media there were no differences from the observation of morphological characteristics showing during the cellular differentiation on agar media, whereas the ability to utilize carbohydrates differed somewhat from agar media. Agar media thus were little favorable for biochemical tests which the growth was determined depending on the formation of colony, but washed PAG was superior to serve as a solidifying agent.

This study that prevent cancer using absorbent to inflow Radon gas in the room existing soil and rock is making board to absorb the Radon gas as a fundamental study. So, we use bentonite as a absorbent. So, we use bentonite as a absorbent. Bentonite is a 'clay mineral' composed to montmorillonite of main component that volcanic ash denatured to a clay mineral. Bentonite has fine microparticle of nano level, abundant mineral 66 of kinds, adsorbability, swelling, a positive ion(heavy metal adsorption reaction) as a bentonite's property. Using magnesia cement for oxide of magnesiuma and magnesium chloride as a main binder, we measure Radon gas absorbent efficiency and thermal conductivity.
