  • Purpose - This paper analyzes the effect of the handset subsidy and the Mobile Number Portability subscriber subsidy regulation, which are the main regulation adopted in "Law on the Improvement of the Mobile Terminal Distribution System" (Mobile Terminal Distribution Act), on the social surplus, the consumer surplus and profits of telecommunications carriers. We focus our analysis on whether the service charge competition is stimulated enough so that it can compensate for the loss of subsidies. Research design, data, and methodology - We use simple economic model to assess the impact of the handset subsidy and the Mobile Number Portability subscriber subsidy regulation. Unlike the former researches on this topic, we depart from using Hotelling model, and instead use the switching cost model, which uses switching cost as a parameter of market powers of telecommunications carriers. We also study the effect of the two different regulations when they are adopted both independently and concurrently. Results - If the market powers of telecommunications carriers are over certain threshold, contrary to the regulatory agency's assertion, the service charge competition would not be stimulated enough to compensate for the deduction in the subsidies, and thus the consumer surplus is compromised. Number Portability subsidy, especially, undermines the rival's market power and thus reduces the service charge. On the other hand, the regulations will also increase the profits of telecommunications carriers. However, social surplus is maximized when both of the regulations are present because the regulations reduces the frequency of switching handsets inefficiently. Conclusions - In enacting the Mobile Terminal Distribution Act, the telecommunications regulatory agency asserted that the regulation on subsidies will stimulate service charge competition, and in the long run, enhance the consumer surplus. However, contrary to the regulatory agency's assertion, subsidy regulation, especially the regulation on Number Portability subsidy, reduces consumer surplus. On the other hand, the Mobile Terminal Distribution Act can also increase the profits of telecommunications carriers because it decreases competition among the telecommunications carriers. However, the Mobile Terminal Distribution Act can increase the social surplus because it reduces inefficient switching of handsets.

  • This research performed to analyze surplus solar energy, which is generated from a greenhouse during daytime, and to make the basic materials for designing thermal energy storage system for surplus solar energy. For this goal, it analyzed the surplus solar energy coming from two types of greenhouse. The results of this research are as per the below: In the case of 1-2W-type greenhouse, this research gave the same temperature and ventilation condition regardless of regions, but it was judged that the quantity of surplus solar energy could be greatly changed, depending on the energy consumed for the photosynthesis and evapotranspiration of crops in the greenhouse, on the heating temperature during daytime and night, on the existence/non-existence of a curtain and its warming effect, and on the ventilation temperature suitable for the overcoming of high temperature troubles or for the optimum cultivation temperature. In the case of a single-span greenhouse, there was a big difference in energy incoming and outgoing by month, but throughout seasons, 85.0 % of the total energy put into the greenhouse was solar energy and the energy input by heating was just 15.0 % of the total. 26.4 % of the total energy input for the greenhouse was used for photosynthesis and evapotranspiration of crops, and 44.2 % of the remaining 73.6 % went out in the form of radiant heat through the surface of the greenhouse. That is, 25.2 % of the total energy loss was just the surplus solar energy. 67.6 % of the total heating energy was concentrically used for 3 months from December to February next year, but the surplus solar energy during the same period was just 19.4 % of the total annual quantity so it was found that the given condition was more restrictive in directly converting the surplus heat into greenhouse heating. Under the disadvantageous circumstance of 3 months from December to February next year, it was possible to supplement 28 % (December) $\sim$ 85 % (February) of heating energy with surplus solar energy.

  • Electricity is the basic building block of economic development, and constitutes one of the vital infra-structural inputs in socio-economic development. The demand for electricity has been increasing due to extensive urbanization, industrialization, and a rise in the standard of living, as is the case with residential electricity consumption. This paper attempts to estimate the consumer surplus and the economic value of the residential consumption of electricity in Seoul to assist in decision-making in electricity management. The estimated consumer surplus represents the value of the area under the demand curve, above the actual price that is paid for residential electricity consumption. The estimated annual consumer surplus and economic value for the year 2005 amount to 2,144.7 and 3,727.4 billion won, respectively. The estimates per kWh were 184.9 and 316.0 won, respectively, which imply that the consumer surplus and the economic value of residential electricity consumption significantly outweigh the average price of electricity in 2005 of 91.1 won per kWh.

  • Kidneybean(Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and buckwheat(Fagopyrum esculentum M nch) seedlings grown with Hoagland solution to a height of 7 to 10 cm in the earthen pot containing sand were used for experimental plants. One group of the experimental plants was irrigated with Hoagland solution composed of various Pb-concentratons of 0 to 1000ppm containing 30ppm, and the other group was irrigated with Hoagland solution composed of various P-concentrations of 0 to 1,000ppm containing 30ppm Pb for a month during June and July in 1979. By Pb-surplus over 100ppm, the margins of buckwheat were curled down and turned into yellow-brown chlorosis, but the leaves of kidneybean were become dark-green at an early stage, and then developed chlorosis, finally shedded earlier than the control. Pb-toxicity was similar to the symptoms of P-deficiency. The ratio, 3/1 of chlorophyll a/b at an early stage, was unaffected by Pb-surplus or P-deficiency, but at the later stage it was altered. ATP content with Pb-surplus of 100ppm was decreased by 69% in kidneybean leaves and by 38% in buckwheat leaves, and it with P-deficiency was decreased by 75% in kidneybean leaves and by 43% in buckwheat leaves. In the assay of ATP content of the leaves at intervals of three hours for one day of July in the year, the rhythms of ATP level were unaffected by light or temperature although the amplitude of the level was modified. The rhythms of Pb-surplus and P-deficiency plants were observed at the lower range of ATP content than that of control.

  • It is discussed how a supplier should design a quantity discount pricing schedule for multiple buyers. It is emphasized that nor only the supplier's surplus but also each buyer's surplus resultant from quantity discount should be considered in designing price schedule. It is shown that if the supplier's quantity pricing schedule is based on his/her profit function, each buyer's surplus may be maximized. And it is also shown that when the supplier's main benefit comes from the reduced number of setups, the incremental discount schedule satisfies the requirement. Formulas to determine values of parameters of the incremental discount schedule are provided.

  • It is important to find an optimal strategy which maximize the surplus of the insurance company at the maturity time T. The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit expression for the optimal reinsurance and investment strategy, under the CEV model, which maximizes the expected exponential utility of the final value of the surplus at T. To do this optimization problem, the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation will be transformed a linear partial differential equation by applying a Legendre transform.

  • A surplus process with two types of claims is considered, where Type I claims occur more frequently, however, their sizes are smaller stochastically than Type II claims. The ruin probabilities of the surplus caused by each type of claim are obtained by establishing integro-differential equations for the ruin probabilities. The formulas of the ruin probabilities contain an infinite sum and convolutions that make the formulas hard to be applicable in practice; subsequently, we obtain explicit formulas for the ruin probabilities when the sizes of both types of claims are exponentially distributed. Finally, we show through a numerical example, that Type II claims have more impact on the ruin probability of the surplus than Type I claims.

  • The success or failure of aquaculture heavily depends on how effectively to manage aquatic animal diseases. The paper is to estimate the direct effects of economic benefits on aquatic animal disease prevention program using economic surplus analysis. The economic benefits include changes in consumer and producer surplus owing to a reduction effect of aquatic animal mortality and the consumption recovery effect. The annual changes in producer surplus for flounder, rockfish and others cultured is estimated as 2.33 billion won totally (0.87 billion won, 1.01 billion won and 0.45 billion won respectively) and the annual changes in consumer surplus 10.15 billion won totally (6.36 billion won, 1.85 billion won and 1.94 billion won respectively). Therefore, total annual economic benefit is 12.5 billion won.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the characteristics and economic status of deficit households compared to surplus households. Data from The Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2005 by NSO and 50, 207 salary/wage earners' households were used for the analysis. The statistical methods used were GLM, logit, and cluster analyses. The analysis results showed that 25.3 percent of the households were deficit households. Approximately half of the lowest 20% income group were deficit households. Income deficit households earned 1, 273 thousand less than that of surplus households, whereas consumption of deficit households was 1, 006 thousand more than that of surplus households. The average propensity of consumption of deficit households was 142.1. According to the logit analysis, factors contributing to the probability of belonging to a deficit household included income level, household size, age and educational level, occupation, homeownership, car ownership, and wife's employment status. Deficit households were classified into 5 types: 1) health care expenditure-dominated group, 2) housing expenditure-dominated group, 3) education expenditure-dominated group, 4) money transfer-dominated group, and 5) overall-overconsumption group. The overall-overconsumption group was the largest group of all at 58.5%. It was found that for all five groups, the changes in household size, income group, home ownership, and occupation of the individual were variables that influenced the probability of belonging to a certain group.

  • The rapid expansion of China's trade surplus since the mid-eighties and picking up until the onset of 2008-09 global financial crisis has been a key development in the world economy. While growing trade surplus of China has been viewed with cynicism borne out of an undervalued Yuan and for having being a member of WTO since 2001, many others argue that China's trade surplus reflect changes in China's economic and trade structure and associated shifts in its role within regional and global production chains. We address this issue by analyzing: (i) China's growing and changing trade structure as well as changing structure of trade surplus with the rest of the world, USA, Europe, Japan and rest of Asia, (ii) China's revealed comparative advantage (RCA) with the rest of the world, and (iii) how China's trade policies resulted into a shift in China's trade structure. We find that, not only China has made significant inroads in the world trade since its admission to WTO, but also there has been a noticeable shift in China's trade structure with specialization in high-end technology industries wherein China's exports aided by a well calibrated FDI policy.
