Release of Cu from SDS micellar solution using complexing agents

  • Micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) is a surfactant-based separation process and it can remove heavy metal ions from aqueous stream effectively. However, it is necessary to recover and reuse surfactants for economic feasibility because surfactant is expensive. Foam fractionation was investigated for both anionic and cationic surfactant recovery. Chelating agent such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was studied for the separation of heavy metals from surfactant solution. Anionic surfactants bound with heavy metals can be recovered by lowering pH (acidification). In this study, citric acid and imminodiacetic acid (IDA) were applied to release copper from sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micellar solution and compared with EDTA. Precipitation of copper by ferricynide and sodium sulfide were also investigated. As a result, ca. 100 % of copper was released from SDS micellar solution by 5 mM of EDTA and citric acid. And 3.3 mM of ferricyanide formed precipitate with 82.7 % of copper. 5 mM of IDA and sodium sulfide released or formed precipitate 82.5 % and 58.9 % of copper, respectively. Citric acid is harmless to environments and ferricyanide precipitates with Cu easily. Therefore, it is considered that citric acid and ferricyanide have competiveness over a famous chelating agent, EDTA, for the separation of Cu from SDS solution.

  • The bacterial transport in soil media was studied. Nonionic surfactants, enhanced the bacterial transports in soil media. The transport rate in soil column was increased by increasing the number of ethylene oxide in polyoxyethylene oxide surfactants. Ionic strength of solution affected the microbial transport characteristics in soil. The hydrophobicity of cell surface was proved that one of important characteristics on the bacterial transport in soil media.

  • Synthetic detergents and surfactants are in widespread usage as household and industrial detergents. Potential human toxic hazard arises following percutaneous absorption or oral ingestion of solution residues from kitchen and feeding utensils, fruits, and vegetables and contaminated water supplies. A toxicological investigations was performed with the synthetic detergents and surfactants [linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS), ${\alpha}$-olefin sulfonate (AOS), sodium lauryl sulfonate (SLS), sodium lauryl ester sulfonate (SLES)], In acute toxicity, agents were administered subcutaneously into ICR mice. In acute study, after lowering of spontaneous motility, respiratory failure, death appeared, vomitting was often associated with salivation and or retching. No sex difference was observed in LD$\sub$50/ of mice. In subacute toxicity, agents were administered orally into SD rats. Body weight increase was suppressed and there was no adverse effect on food and water consumption. The weight of organs were not changed by agents as compared with control group. No specific change was observed in biochemical and hematologicalor data.

  • In-situ treatment technologies have been proposed to transform or remove pollutants from contaminated groundwater. Zero-valent iron(Fe$^{0}$ ), metallic iron, is being evaluated as a permeable reactive material to retard the transport of wide array of highly mobile contaminants in groundwater. In this research, tetrachloroethylene(PCE) dechlorination by powdered zero-valent iron in buffered aqueous solution was studied with and without the presence of surfactants. The rate of dechlorination of PCE by zero-valent iron with surfactant was much higher than without surfactant. The presence of surfactant increased the apparent rate of dechlorination because the surfactants influenced the dissolution of PCE into the aqueous phase.

  • Surfactants have been extensively considered for decontamination of the subsurface polluted with hydrophobic organic compounds. Enhanced solubilization of naphthalene and phenanthrene in surfactant solution of SDDBS, MADS12 and DADS12 was studied for single compounds and their binary mixture. The order of increasing solubility enhancement of naphthalene and phenanthrene is SDDBS < MADS12 < DADS12. The solubility enhancement of phenanthrene is more than that of naphthalene because of the higher hydrophobicity. A synergistic effect on the solubilization of two PAHs was observed in the presence of another PAH.

이성분 나노유체에서의 암모니아 기포 흡수 성능 향상 (Enhancement of $NH_3$ Bubble Absorption Performance in Binary Nanofluids)

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the absorption characteristics of $NH_3$ bubbles in the binary nanofluids and to quantify the effects of surfactants and nano-particles on the bubble absorption performance. 2-Ethyl-1-Hexanol, n-Octanol, and 2-Octanol are used as the surfactants and nano-sized $Al_{2}O_3$ and Cu particles are added to make the binary nanofluids into $NH_3/H_{2}O$ solution. The concentration of $NH_3$ solution ($x_s$), the concentration of surfactants ($x_{SA}$), and the mass fraction of nano-particles ($w_{np}$) are considered as key parameters. The experimented ranges of $x_s,\;x_{SA},\;and\;w_{np}$ are $0{\sim}17.92\%,\;0{\sim}1,500\;ppm\;and\;0{\sim}0.2\%$, respectively. The absorption rates are calculated by measuring initial and final weights of test section and exposed time. In addition, the bubble absorption processes are visualized using the shadow graphic method. The results show that the absorption performance is significantly enhanced up to 4 times by adding the surfactants and up to 3 times in the binary nanofluids.

  • Cationic surfactants can be used to modify surface of solids to promote adsorption of hydrophobic organic compounds. This behavior is due to the surfactant forming aggregate structure on the solid surface. Partition coefficients are commonly used to quantify the distribution of organic pollutants between the aqueous and particulate phases of aquatic system Partitioning of hydrophobic compounds to cetyltrimethylammonium bromide ( CTAB ) coated silicate has been investigated as a function of surfactant surface coverage at I=0 and 0.1 ionic strength. Toluene, Xylene, TCI sorption experiments demonstrated that the CTAB coated silicate was able to remove these hydrophobic organic compounds from solution The hydrophobic organic compound with the higher Kow had higher removals than lowest Kow hydrophobic organic compound.

Synergism effect of mixed surfactant solutions in remediation of soil contaminated with PCE

  • The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of mixed surfactant solution for removal of perchloroethylene (PCE) in soil. Ten different surfactant solutions were used in column studies. Mixed surfactant solutions (anionic and nonionic) were most effectively worked in the sandy soil for removal of PCE as a result of synergism between the two types of surfactants. The effectiveness of the mixture of surfactants was 35 % greater than that for the anionic or nonionic surfactant alone. The results indicate that mixed surfactant solution leaching is a promising candidate for the remediation of PCE contaminated sandy soil.

  • Polyamide microcapsules were designed for a sustained drug release. As a model, riboflavin was e no apsulated in polyamide microcapsules. Polyamide microcapsules were prepared from thiamines and acid bichlorides by the interfacial polycondensation reaction. The diamines used in ttlis works were ethylenediamine and 1, 6-hexamethylenediamine. Sebacoylchloride and teruphthaloylchloride were employed as acid bichlorides. The following parameters were studied; the release of several kinds of polyamide microcapsules , the various concentrations of diamines and acid dichlorides ; the various concentrations of surfactants : the various pH range of sink solution during the dissolution test. The release amount of riboflavin from aromatic polyamide micrcapsule was higher than that of aliphatic polyamide microcapsule The release rate of riboflavin from the polyamide microcapsule was decreased with increase of concentration of thiamines, arid dichlorides and surfactants which is used for preparing polyamide microcapsule. Release riboflavin from polyamide microcapsule was lower at pH 7 than pH 2 in sink-solution for dissolution test.

  • 중합반응을 할 수 있는 vinyl 기와 콜레스테롤 기를 갖는 계면활성제들을 합성하고, 이 계면활성제들을 물 속에서 sonication하여 vesicle 용액을 형성한 다음, 이 용액을 건조하여 분자들이 규칙적으로 배열된 분자 다층 구조를 갖는 막을 합성하였다. 이 막들을 UV를 이용하여 중합한 다음 분자량을 측정하여 중합성을 살펴보았으며, X-ray diffractometer로 분석하여 다층 구조를 어느 정도 잘하고 있는지극 살펴 보았다.
