The effects of nonionic surfactant (SPAN 20) on the desulfurization process by Rhodococcus sp. strain IGTS8 have been investigated at various oil/water ratios, pHs and concentrations of surfactant. The hexadecane containing DBT was employed as model oil. The presence of surfactant in the oil/water mixture stabilized the oil/water interface, thus enhanced the efficiency of desulfurization. The volume percentages of oil in the oil/water mixture were 30, 50 and 70%. The concentrations of surfactant were varied from 0 to 0.33 wt% relative to water phase. In general, the biodesulfurization efficiencies were decreased as the concentration of SPAN 20 and the volume percentage of oil phase increased.

The turbulent flow resistance of water solution with polymer is reduced as compared with that of pure water. This effects is named th drag reduction and offers the significant reduction of the pumping power and the energy consumption. But the intense shear forces and the high temperature experienced by the polymer solution when passing through the pipes cause the degradation a loss of drag reduction effectiveness. Especially, the degradation behavior is found to be strongly dependent on temperature. This mechanical and thermal degradation can be avoided by adding materials such as surfactant to the polymer solution, which enhance the bonding force between molecules. In the present study, Copolymer and SDS were utilized and they were mixed in 10 different mixture ratios, while total concentration was fixed as 100wppm. Degradation of Copolymer-SDS mixture solutions was investigated experimentally in closed loop at the temperature of $10^{\circ}C\; and\; 80^{\circ}C$ with various flow average velocities of 1.5 m/sec, 3.0m/sec, and 4.5m/sec. Degradation characteristics of polymer solution without surfactant show a radical loss of drag reduction effectiveness at high temperature. Degradation alleviation ability of surfactant is especially effective at high temperature. Consequently, this results show that the addition of surfactant to the polymer solution can control unfavorable degradation phenomena for high temperature systems.

The drag reduction(DR) of non-ionic surfactant and polymer according to the variation of fluid velocity, temperature and surfactant concentration was investigated experimentally. For this experiment, the kind of surfactant was non ionic amine-oxide and the kinds of polymer were polyacrylamide and xantan gum. An experimental apparatus equipped with one water storage tanks was built and two flow meters, two pressure gauges for data logging system was installed. Results showed that the kinds of polymer, polyacrylamide and xantan gum, had DR of below 20% for below 500 ppm in fluid temperature of $50{\sim}80^{\circ}C$. But the kind of surfactant, amine oxide, had DR of above 40% for 500~1000 ppm in fluid temperature of $50{\sim}80^{\circ}C$. As a result, amin oxide showed better materials to use to the district heating system.

This study was concerned with the enhancement of mass transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different vertical inner tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes were a bare tube, groove tube, corrugate tube and inserted spring tubes. The additive concentration of normal octyl alcohol as a surfactant is about 0.08mass%. The Sherwood number was measured as a function of film Reynolds number 20~200. The experimental results were compared with those which use no surfactant. The enhancement of mass transfer by Marangoni convection effect which was generated by addition of the surfactant is proved for each testing tube Especially, it is clarified that the tube with the spring has the highest enhancement effect. A correlation of the experimental mass transfer data for the bare, groove, corrugate and insert spring tubes results expressed as the form of Sh=cㆍ Re$_{f}$$^{n}$ .

Recently, mesoporous metallic materials are becoming more and more important in various applications like catalysts, electrochemical detectors, batteries, and fuel cells because of their high surface area. Among the various methods for manufacturing mesoporous structure, surfactant templating method followed by electroplating has been tried in this study. A mesoporous metallic film was prepared by electrodeposition from electroplating solution mixed with surfactant template. Nonionic type lyotropic liquid crystalline surfactant, Brij56, and nickel acetate based solution were selected as a template material and electroplating solution, respectively. To determine the content of surfactant forming a hexagonal column structure, the phase diagram of electroplating solution and surfactant mixture has been exploited by polarized optical microscopy equipped with heating and cooling stage. Nickel films were electroplated on Cu foil by stepwise potential input method to alleviate the concentration polarization occurred during the electroplating process. TEM and XRD analyses were performed to characterize the size and shape of mesostructures in manufactured nickel films, and electrochemical characterization was also carried out using cyclic voltammetry.
The interaction of cationic surfactants, n-alkyltrimethylammonium bromide ($C_nTAB$; n = 12, 14, 16) with anionic polyelectrolyte, poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) has been studied by surface tension measurement. In the absence of added salt, the cationic surfactants bind to PSS quantitatively up to ca. 60% coverage of anionic sites of the polyanion and the complexes were surface inactive. Further binding of the surfactant cations on PSS caused a sharp conformational transition of the surfactant/ PSS complexes to surface active complexes and accompanied precipitation. The binding showed a biphasic behavior in the presence of NaCl and cooperativity of the binding became less as the concentration of NaCl increased. Binding of the cationic surfactants on poly(vinylsulfonate) also showed the biphasic behavior and the cooperativity of the binding was much less even in the absence of NaCl. The binding of surfactant to PSS provided hydrophobic environment to solubilized pyrene and reduced the viscosity of the solution greatly even at surfactant concentrations well below cmc. This study indicated that the surfactant bound to PSS up to $60{\%}$ coverage of PSS sites are present as surfactant aggregates which are wrapped up with PSS chains, and hydrophobic interaction is an important factor in the binding of the surfactants to PSS.
Lab scale batch and column tests were performed to investigate the treatability of petroleum contaminated soil using the in-situ soil flushing method. The pyrex column (4.5$\times$25 cm) was used to investigate optimal washing agent, surfactant concentration, mixing ratio, and inlet velocity. The miked surfactant of $POE_{14}$ and SDS were determined as ideal systems for the batch tests. From the results of preliminary tests, mixed surfactant was found to be more harmful for microorganisms. So $POE_{5}$ and $POE_{14}$ were chosen as the surfactant system for the batch study. The washing efficiency for the diesel contaminated soil was increased until 1 %, and decreased after l %. When applied as selected mixed surfactant, the ideal mixed ratio was recognized as 1:1. Therefore we selected miked surfactant $POE_{5}$ and $POE_{14}$, surfactant concentration 1%, and mixed ratio 1:1 for the remediation of diesel contaminated soil. In column tests, the total removal efficiency was improved as the flux of washing agent was increased. At the same pore volume, small flux showed better removal efficiency.

The long term drag reduction characteristics of Habon-G solution were investigated in the KIER pilot-scaled district heating simulation system. Test runs were implemented for 30 days without interruption. Pressure drop, flow rate and power consumption of surfactant (Habon-G) solution were regularly observed and compared with those of plain water. The experimental results suggest that the surfactant can be effectively applied to the DH transmission system for considerably long period wthout significant loss of its drag reduction capability even though the concentration of the additive may gradually decrease in the first stage of the experiment because of absorption.
This research was concerned with the enhancement of heat transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different horizontal tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes were a bare tube, floral tube, hydrophilic tube. The additive concentration was about $0.05{\sim}5.5mass%$. The heat transfer coefficient was measured as a function of solution flow rate in the range of $0.01{\sim}0.034 kg/ms$. The experimental result were compared with cases without surfactant. The enhancement of heat transfer by Marangoni convection effect which was generated by addition of the surfactant is observed in each test tube.
The effect of ozone and/or ultrasound treatments on the efficiency of slurry removal in post sliced cleaning (PSC) of silicon ingot was studied. Efficiency of slurry removal was evaluated as functions of time, temperature and surfactant with DOE (Design of Experiment) method. Residual slurries were observed on the wafer surface in case of cleaning by ozone or ultrasound separately. However, a clean wafer surface was appeared when cleaned with ozone and ultrasound simultaneously. It has found that cleaning time was the main effect among temperature, time and surfactant. Elevated temperature, addition of surfactant and high ozone concentration helped to accelerate efficient removal of slurry. The improvement of removal efficiency seems to be related to the formation of more active OH radicals. The highly cleaned surface was achieved at 10 wt% ozone, 1 min and 10 vol% surfactant with ultrasound. Application of ozone and ultrasound might be a useful method for PSC process in wafer cleaning.
