We carried out the kinetic model calculations in order to estimate the nucleation rates for two kinds of half-loop dislocations in highly strained hetero-epitaxial growths; $60^{\circ}$dislocations and twinning dislocations. The surface defects and the stress concentration effects were considered in this model, and the remaining elastic strain of the epilayers with increasing film thickness was taken into account by using the modified Matthews' relation. The calculations showed that the stress concentration effect at surface imperfections is very important for describing the defect generation in highly mismatched epitaxial growth. This work also showed that the stress concentration effect determined the type of dislocation nucleating dominantly at early growth stages in accordance with our XTEM (cross-section transmission electron microscopy) defect observation.

A large area negative metal ion beam source is developed. Kinetic ion beam of the incident metal ions yields a whole nucleation and growth phenomena compared to the conventional thin film deposition processes. At the initial deposition step one can engineer the surface and interface by tuning the energy of the incident metal ion beams. Smoothness and shallow implantation can be tailored according to the desired application process. Surface chemistry and nucleation process is also controlled by the energy of the direct metal ion beams. Each individual metal ion beams with specific energy undergoes super-thermodynamic reactions and nucleation. degree of formation of tetrahedral Sp3 carbon films and beta-carbon nitride directly depends on the energy of the ion beams. Grain size and formation of polycrystalline Si, at temperatures lower than 500deg. C is obtained and controlled by the energy of the incident Si-ion beams. The large area metal ion source combines the advantages of those magnetron sputter and SKIONs prior cesium activated metal ion source. The ion beam source produces uniform amorphous diamond films over 6 diameter. The films are now investigated for applications such as field emission display emitter materials, protective coatings for computer hard disk and head, and other protective optical coatings. The performance of the ion beam source and recent applications will be presented.
Small angle light scattering (SALS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) have been used to investigate the effects of alcohol on phase separation of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC)/tetrahydrofuran (THF)/alcohol (9/61/30 wt%) solution during water vapor induced phase separation. A typical scattering pattern of nucleation & growth (NG) was observed for all casting solutions of CPVC/THF/alcohol. In the case of the phase separation of CPVC dope solution containing 30 wt% ethanol or n-propanol, the demixing with NG was observed to be heterogeneous. Meanwhile, the phase separation of CPVC dope solution with 30 wt% n-butanol was found to be predominantly homogeneous NG. Although the different phase separation behavior of NG was observed with types of alcohol additives, the resultant surface morphology had no remarkable differences. That is, even though the NG process by water vapor is either homogeneous or heterogeneous, this difference does not play a main role on the final surface morphology. However, it was estimated from the result of hydraulic flux that the phase separation by homogeneous NG provided the membrane geometry with lower resistance in comparison with that by heterogeneous one.

Charged carbon clusters which are formed by the gas activation are suggested to be responsible for the formation of the metastable diamond film. The number of carbon atoms in the cluster that can reverse the stability between diamond and graphite by the capillary effect increases sensitively with increasing the surface energy ratio of graphite to diamond. The gas activation process produces charges such as electrons and ions, which are energetically the strong heterogeneous nucleation sites for the supersaturated carbon vapor, leading to the formation of the charged clusters. Once the carbon clusters are charged, the surface energy of diamond can be reduced by the electrical double layer while that of graphite cannot because diamond is dielectric and graphite is conducting. The unusual phenomena observed in the chemical vapor deposition diamond process can be successfully approached by the charged cluster model. These phenomena include the diamond deposition with the simultaneous graphite etching, which is known as the thermodynamic paradox and the preferential formation of diamond on the convex edge, which is against the well-established concept of the heterogeneous nucleation.

Electron field emission properties from various CVD diamond films were studied. Diamond films were synthesized by microwave plasma CVD at 1173K and at 673K substrates temperature and pulse microwave plasma CVD at 1173K. B-doped diamond film was synthesized by microwave plasma CVD at 1173K also. Estimation by SEM, both the non-doped diamond film and B-doped diamond film which were synthesized at 1173K substrate temperature were $2~3\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter and nucleation densities were $10^{8}{\;}numbers/\textrm{cm}^2$ order. The diamond film synthesized at 673K was $0.2\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter and nucleation densities was 109 numbers/cm2 order. The diamond film synthesized by pulse microwave plasma CVD at 1173K was $0.2\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter and nucleation density was $10^{9}{\;}numbers/\textrm{cm}^2$ order either. From the result of electron field emission measurement, electron field emission at $20V/\mu\textrm{m}$ from CVD diamond film synthesized by pulse microwave plasma CVD was $37.3\mu\textrm{A}/\textrm{cm}^2$ and the diamond film showed the best field emission property comparison with other CVD diamond.
The effect of wheel surface condition on solidification behavior of Al-Cu ribbon was investigated in order to establish extreme levels of heat extraction. The condition of wheel surface was changed either by heating the wheel surface up to $200^{\circ}C$ or by coating boron nitride(BN) onto the the rim of a wheel. Heating the wheel surface up to $200^{\circ}C$ improved the wetting behavior between the molten metal and the rotating wheel, leading to an increase in the ratio of columnar structure to the entire thickness of Al-4.3wt%Cu and Al-33.2wt%Cu ribbons. For Al-4.3wt%Cu ribbon, assuming one grain as a single heterogeneous nucleation event at the contact point, the nucleation density with the wheel surface heated to $200^{\circ}C$, was $4{\times}10^6/mm^2$, and in the cases of BN coating with thin and thick layers, $10^5/mm^2$ and $5{\times}10^4/mm^2$, respectively. The largest cooling capacity of the wheel corresponded to the heated wheel surface, and as the thickness of BN coating layer increased, the cooling capacity of the wheel gradually decreased.
The opd gene, encoding organophosphorus hydrolase (OPH) from Flavobacterium sp. capable of degrading a wide range of organophosphate pesticides, was surface- and intracellular-expressed in Synechococcus PCC7942, a prime example of photoautotrophic cyanobacteria. OPH was displayed on the cyanobacterial cell surface using the truncated ice nucleation protein as an anchoring motif. A minor fraction of OPH was displayed onto the outermost surface of cyanobacterial cells, as verified by immunostaining visualized under confocal laser scanning microscopy and OPH activity analysis; however, a substantial fraction of OPH was buried in the cell wall, as demonstrated by proteinase K and lysozyme treatments. The cyanobacterial outer membrane acts as a substrate (paraoxon) diffusion barrier affecting whole-cell biodegradation efficiency. After freeze-thaw treatment, permeabilized whole cells with intracellular-expressed OPH exhibited 14-fold higher bioconversion efficiency ($V_{max}/K_m$) than that of cells with surface-expressed OPH. As cyanobacteria have simple growth requirements and are inexpensive to maintain, expression of OPH in cyanobacteria may lead to the development of a low-cost and low-maintenance biocatalyst that is useful for detoxification of organophosphate pesticides.

Diamond is well known as the hardest material in nature. It also has other unique bulk physical and mechanical properties, such as very high thermal conductivity and broad optical transparency, which enable a number of new applications now that large areas of diamond can be fabricated by the new diamond plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technologies. A study on the effects of growth kinetics and properties of diamond films obtained by addition of argon (~7 vol. %) into the methane/hydrogen mixture is carried out using HFCVD system. A negative bias was used as a nucleation enhancement method in addition to the argon dilution. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of surface morphology shows well faceted crystallites with a predominance of angular shapes corresponding to <100> and <110> crystalline surfaces. The nucleation density and growth rate with argon dilution is two orders of magnitude higher than without argon deposition. The Raman spectra show a good quality film whereas XPS spectra show existence of only diamond phase.
The influence of indenter geometry on nanoindentation was studied using a static molecular dynamics simulation. Dislocation nucleation, dislocation locks, and dislocation movements during nanoindentation into Al (001) were studied. Spherical, rectangular, and Berkovich indenters were modeled to study the material behaviors and dislocation activities induced by their different shapes. We found that the elastic responses for the three cases agreed well with those predicted from elastic contact theory. Complicated stress fields were generated by the rectangular and Berkovich indenters, leading to a few uncommon nucleation and dislocation processes. The calculated mean critical resolved shear stresses for the Berkovich and rectangular indenters were lower than the theoretical strength. In the Berkovich indenter case, an amorphous region was observed directly below the indenter tip. In the rectangular indenter case, we observed that some dislocation loops nucleated on the plane. Furthermore, a prismatic loop originating from inside the material glided upward to create a mesa on the indenting surface. We observed an unusual softening phenomenon in the rectangular indenter case and proposed that heterogeneously nucleating dislocations are responsible for this.
The thermal signature of nucleation process is characterized by the induction time, the degree of supercooling, and the equilibrium temperature depression. The initiation of nucleation presents stochastic characteristics. The factors that affect nucleation are mechanical impact, ionic concentration, mineral surface characters, and pore size. Hydrate-bearing sediments behave mechanically like other cemented sediments. The data set has important implications for the calibration and interpretation of geophysical measurements and downhole logs collected in gas hydrate provinces, providing particular insight for the interpretation of P- and S-wave data and resistivity logs. In addition, laboratory formation history and ensuing pore-scale spatial distribution likely have a more pronounced effect on the macroscale mechanical properties of hydrate-bearing sediments
