Print gloss is an important attribute of the final printed product. While past work has looked at the influence of key aspects of the coating structure on print gloss, a systematic study has not been reported. The coating roughness, porosity, and pore size are changed by using various combinations of coating materials and by calendering against rough plastic sheets. The print gloss is measured every tenths of a second right after printing, a few minutes after printing, and a few days afterwards. Roughness and porosity affect the print gloss for the first two seconds: this result shows that they influence the ink-film splitting event. Once ink film starts to level, roughness and pore size influences the level of print gloss within the first ten seconds after printing. Porosity modifies the evolution of print gloss for the next few minutes. The decrease in gloss at long times is found to correlate to surface roughness.
Purpose: This study aimed to confirm the applicability of gloss polishing using automatic barrel finishing with respect to three-dimensional (3D)-printed resin specimens. The surface roughness and grinding angle of the 3D-printed resin specimens were observed with respect to gloss polishing time using automatic dental barrel finishing. Methods: Herein, experiments were conducted on four types of 3D-printed resin specimens. The specimens, with a thickness of 100 ㎛ each, were printed using a 3D printer. Subsequently, light polymerization was performed on these specimens for 15 min. Post this surface treatment, the specimens underwent grinding for 25 min. This process was followed by gloss polishing at 5-min intervals for up to 25 min using automatic dental barrel finishing. The specimens were photographed using a 3D optical microscope, and their surface roughness and grinding angle were measured. Results: The Ra (centerline average roughness) values of all the specimens, except for crown & bridge 10 group and those in the control group that were not polished using automatic barrel finishing, were <0.2 ㎛. However, polishing time needs to be controlled to realize the desired surface roughness and grinding amount considering the hardness of the resin used. Conclusion: Gloss polishing of 3D-printed resin can be realized using automatic dental barrel finishing. However, polishing time needs to be controlled to realize the desired surface roughness and grinding amount considering the hardness of the resin used.

Objectives: This study compared the surface gloss (SG), gloss retention (GR), and color stability (CS) of 2 universal resin composites after chemical (CA) and mechanical (MA) aging. Materials and Methods: Twenty disc-shaped samples of G-ænial A'Chord (GC-Europe) and Filtek Universal (3M-ESPE) were polished with sequential abrasive papers. For CA, specimens were stored in 1 mL of 75% ethanol for 15 days at 37℃, and readings (SG, GR, and CS) were obtained at baseline and 5, 10, and 15 days. For MA, specimens were subjected to 10,750 simulated brushing cycles. SG and CS were evaluated after every 3,583 cycles. SG was measured with a glossmeter (geometrical configuration: 60°), and values were expressed in gloss units. Color was measured with a spectrophotometer using the CIE-L*a*b* color system. The Student's t-test, 1-way analysis of variance, and Scheffé test were used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05). Results: G-ænial presented significantly higher SG values than Filtek (p = 0.02), with GR reductions of 5.2% (CA) and 5.3% (MA) for G-ænial and 7.6% (CA) and 7.2% (MA) for Filtek. The aging protocol had no statistically significant effect on SG or GR (p = 0.25) from baseline to the final readings. G-ænial-MA presented the lowest color difference (ΔE = 1.8), and G-ænial-CA and Filtek-CA had the largest changes (ΔE = 8.6 and ΔE = 11.8, respectively). Conclusion: G-ænial presented higher SG values and better CS. Both restorative materials demonstrated acceptable GR and CS. Aging protocols impacted these properties negatively.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of surface treatments, liquids, and aging on color, translucency, and surface properties of monolithic ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Lithium disilicate (LDS) and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) ceramics (n = 135 each) were cut and divided into three groups [crystallization+glaze (single stage), crystallization-glaze (two stages), and crystallization-polish (two stages)]. One sample from each group was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Remaining samples were divided into four subgroups (distilled water, coffee, grape juice, and smoothie) (n = 11 each), stored for 12 d in the respective liquids, and thermally aged. One sample from each subgroup was analyzed using SEM. The color, gloss, and roughness values of the samples were analyzed after surface treatment (initial) and storage under different liquids+aging conditions. The initial data and both the aged data and data change values were analyzed using robust two- and three-way analyses of variance. RESULTS. The glazed groups exhibited smoother surfaces. Ceramic type and ceramic-surface treatment interactions affected the initial translucency parameter (TP) (P < .001) and the initial and aged roughness values (P ≤ .001). Surface treatment type affected the color change (P < .001), and ceramic type affected the aged TP values (P < .001). Type of ceramic, surface treatment, and their interactions affected both the initial and aged gloss (P ≤ .001) and TP change values (P ≤ .015). Surface treatment type and ceramic-surface treatment interactions affected the gloss change values (P ≤ .001). CONCLUSION. Although both ceramics and all surface treatments are clinically applicable, crystallization-glaze is recommended. When gloss and smoothness are important or when translucency is important, ZLS or LDS may be preferred, respectively.
Mar behavior and visibility were investigated by applying a constant load to various gloss-coated urethane-acrylate surfaces. Using a area-contact scratch tip which can apply a relatively low stress level to the coated surfaces, the mar damages were generated on the surfaces. When evaluating the mar-induced damage by means of delta-gloss (${\Delta}G$) and delta-luminance (${\Delta}L$) with existing test methodologies, an increase in constant load on the same gloss-coated surface leads to an increase in ${\Delta}G$ and ${\Delta}L$. However, these are not suitable for evaluating and comparing the surface damages of different gloss-coated samples because of a disagreement between the measured values and the mar visibility. It is shown that new mar test assessment proposed in this work not only can be used to quantitatively evaluate the mar damage, but also accounts for the correlation that the increases of the normalized gloss and luminance on coated surfaces correspond with an increase in the mar visibility.

Gloss uniformity on unprinted coated papers is oftenly called as 'Surface Feeling' in market and roles as a very important criteria when a customer choose a paper. However, there is few researches on this quality so far and even there isn't much knowledge on the characteristics of gloss variation, ie what it is, where it comes from etc. Therefore, there should be a pre-research on its characteristics, factors, measuring method or tools prior to the following development activities. In this paper, we obtained about a dozen of papers including foreign products and measured not only basic properties of them, but also various characteristics related to ununiformity. Our experiments went further to printing, but that area is excluded in this paper. Also, we investigated several instruments for measuring gloss variation by an objective way all over the world and tested with our own samples so that we tried to find out which one is best-correlated with visual appreciation and suggest its results as possible. We found out several things from these experiments including what is difference between good and bad gloss uniformity, the factors of gloss variation, and the results of measurement for gloss variation with instruments.
Color(and appearance)is one of the most important visual attributes in food. The favorite color of food is depend on the nation and its culture. Unfortunately the word on color ash superseded appearance as the description of the total visual perception of food. The optical properties are color, gloss, translucency, the uniformity of these attributes over the surface of the product, and the appearance boundary condition visual flavor. The major purpose of this lecture is to stress the importance of color and gloss on the basis of sensory evaluation for vegetables and these cooking process. These points are as follows: 1. Color and palatability Principle of cooking ; five tastes and five colors 2. Pigments and colorimeter Plant pigments ; Chlorophyll, Carotinoid, Anthocyan Optical properties and colorimeter Correlating instrumental and pigments data 3. Color, gloss of vegetables Effect of color and gloss on several cooking treatments 4. The importance of color of foods to the food industry and consumer
The main objective of this study was to investigate effects of pigment mixed with different ratio on the double coated paper. Mineral pigments such as clay and ground calcium carbonate(GCC) as well as hollow sphere plastic pigment were used to evaluate the physical, optical properties and printabilities of double coated paper. The physical properties such as gloss and smoothness, and the printability(ink gloss) of double coated paper were measured to evaluate the effects of the bottom layer on improving the properties of top layer. The data indicated that the usage of hollow sphere plastic pigment for the bottom layer coating improved the surface properties of double coated paper, and that ink gloss was significantly influenced by the structure of bottom layer even when hollow sphere plastic pigment was used for the bottom layer coating.
A series of silica surface-capped with hexamethyldisilazane (denoted as $H-SiO_2$) were prepared by liquid-phase in-situ surface-modification method. The as-obtained $H-SiO_2$ was incorporated into acrylic amino (AA) baking paint to obtain AA/$H-SiO_2$ composite extinction paints and/or coatings. $N_2$ adsorption-desorption tests were conducted to determine the specific surface area as well as pore size and pore volume of $H-SiO_2$. Moreover, the effects of $H-SiO_2$ matting agents on the physical properties of AA paint as well as the gloss and transmittance of AA-based composite extinction coatings were investigated. Results show that $H-SiO_2$ matting agents possess a large specific surface area and pore volume than previously reported silica obtained by liquid-phase method. Besides, they have better dispersibility in AA baking paint than the unmodified silica. Particularly, $H-SiO_2$ with a silica particle size of $6.7{\mu}m$ and the dosage of 4% (mass fraction) provides an extinction rate of 95.2% and a transmittance of 79.3% for the AA-based composite extinction coating, showing advantages over OK520, a conventional silica matting agent. Along with the increase in the silica particle size, $H-SiO_2$ matting agents cause a certain degree of increase in the viscosity of AA paint as well as a noticeable decrease in the gloss of the AA-based composite extinction coating, but they have insignificant effects on the hardness and adhesion to substrate of the AA-based composite coatings. This means that $H-SiO_2$ matting agents could be well applicable to preparing low-viscosity and low-gloss AA-based matte coatings.
The demand characteristics of the conventional 12 kinds of epoxy resins which have been used for restoration of the ceramic relics were investigated to provide standards of the effective materials in this study. The result of durability analysis showed that a liquid type is more effective in ceramic relics (low damage, high strength), and a paste type is more effective in earthenware relics (high damage, low strength). The result of workability analysis appears that the liquid type is higher than the paste type, and a slow curing type is higher than a fast curing type in surface hardness. Therefore, in the case of the liquid type which is hard to reprocess due to high surface hardness, it is necessary to conduct a study on improving physical properties by adding filler. The result of the gloss analysis on epoxy resins showed that the liquid type (colorless) has higher gloss than the paste type, and the slow curing type has higher gloss than the fast curing type in liquid types. CDK-520A/520B and Araldite SV 427-2/HV 427-1 showed the most similar gloss to $700^{\circ}C$ earthenware, Devcon 5 minute, EPO-TEK 301-2, and Quik Wood showed the most similar gloss to celadon and whiteware, Quik Wood, EPO-TEK 301-2, and Devcon 5 minute showed the most similar gloss to buncheongware. It is necessary for conservator to decide the range of the restoration surface by predicting the increase and decrease of the restoration surface because most of the epoxy resins caused the volume change in curing process.
