  • In level set method, material properties are made to change smoothly across an interface of two materials with different properties by introducing an interpolation or smoothing scheme. So far, the weighted arithmetic mean (WAM) method has been exclusively adopted in level set method, without complete assessment for its validity. We showed here that the weighted harmonic mean (WHM) method for rate constants of various rate processes, including viscosity, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and permittivity, gives much more accurate results than the WAM method. The selection of interpolation scheme is particularly important in multi-phase electrohydrodynamic problems in which driving force for fluid flow is electrical force exerted on the phase interface. Our analysis also showed that WHM method for both electrical conductivity and permittivity gives not only more accurate, but also more physically realistic distribution of electrical force at the interface. Our arguments are confirmed by numerical simulations of drop deformation under DC electric field.

  • In the present study, an advanced surface construction method based on NURBS surface scheme is proposed to construct the extrusion die surface. The inlet and outlet profiles we precisely described with NURBS curves using the cubic appropriate control points and weights. The interior control Points of surface are generated using the cubic interpolation of the weights at the inlet and outlet sections. In order to verify of the proposed method, automatic surface generation is carried out for the various types of extrusion die surface.

  • Numerical analysis of two-fluid flows for both water and air is carried out. Free-Surface flows with an arbitrary deformation have been simulated around two dimensional submerged hydrofoil. The computation is performed using a finite volume method with unstructured meshes and an interface capturing scheme to determine the shape of the free surface. The method uses control volumes with an arbitrary number of faces and allows cell-wise local mesh refinement. the integration in space is of second order based on midpoint rule integration and linear interpolation. The method is fully implicit and uses quadratic interpolation in time through three time levels The linear equation systems are solved by conjugate gradient type solvers and the non-linearity of equations is accounted for through picard iterations. The solution method is of pressure-correction type and solves sequentially the linearized momentum equations the continuity equation the conservation equation of one species and the equations or two turbulence quantities.

  • As consumer electronics, information, and aero-space industry grow, the demand for aspheric lens increases higher. To enhance the precision and productivity of aspheric surface, a CAM system for ultra-precision aspheric surface needs to be realized. In this study, the developed CAM system can generate NC code fur various aspheric surfaces fast and precisely by a new bi-arc interpolation method that the location of maximum error is fixed at an efficient point. The newly developed bi-arc meets the given tolerance more precisely, performs faster calculation. The cutting condition input module and the NC code verification module are adequate to ultra-precision machining, so that a operator can obtain products fast and easily.

The solution method is of pressure-correction type and solves sequentially the linearized momentum equations, the continuity equation, the conservation equation of one species, and the equations for two turbulence quantities. Finally, a comparison is quantitatively made at the same speed between the computation and experiment in which the grid sensitivity is numerically checked.

  • This paper describes a smooth surface interpolating method of ship hull using a three-dimensional currie net that comes from the mesh curve fairing process. Geometric continuity(($GC^1$) is preserved across the boundary curve between patches. The three-dimensional curve net can have nonrectangular topologies, such as triangular and pentagonal topology. Among the boundary curve interpolation methods, Hermite blended Coons patch, Convex combination, and Gregory patch interpolation method are used to generate the ship hull surface. To check the fairness of the surface, the numerical method of surface/surface intersection problem is adopted. An application to an actual ship hull is given as an example.

  • A local radial point interpolation method (LRPIM) based on local residual formulation is presented and applied to solid mechanics in this paper. In LRPIM, the trial function is constructed by the radial point interpolation method (PIM) and establishes discrete equations through a local residual formulation, which can be carried out nodes by nodes. Therefore, element connectivity for trial function and background mesh for integration is not necessary. Radial PIM is used for interpolation so that singularity in polynomial PIM may be avoided. Essential boundary conditions can be imposed by a straightforward and effective manner due to its Delta properties. Moreover, the approximation quality of the radial PIM is evaluated by the surface fitting of given functions. Numerical performance for this LRPIM method is further studied through several numerical examples of solid mechanics.

  • Flow field around the KRISO 3600TEU container ship is computed using a surface generated based on interpolations of station lines, which are given in a body plan of the ship, without using any CAD program. An interpolation method is suggested based on inscribed circles to generate curves between two neighboring station lines. The interpolated surface is saved in a STL format to use the snappyHexMesh utility of the openfoam. Computed resistance of the ship is compared with experimental and other computational results and the effects of the interpolation of neighboring station lines on the computed resistance are investigated. The suggested method is applied to calculate the flow field around a submarine with appendages. The surface triangulations for the hull and the appendages are generated without consideration of each other, then those surface triangulations are simply combined to provide a grid generator with the body boundary. The junctures of the hull and the appendages are identified automatically during the grid generation procedure. Tip vortex is captured, which travels downstream from the tip of the appendages.

  • The finite element analysis has become an essential process to investigate the structural performance in many industry fields. In addition, the computer's performance is improving rapidly, but in large design problems, there is a limit to apply the optimal design techniques. For this, it is general to introduce a metamodel based optimization technique. The method to generate an approximate model can be classified into curve fitting and interpolation, and each representative one is response surface model and kriging interpolation method. This study proposes an ensemble model made of RSM and kriging to solve a structural design problem. The suggested method is applied to the designs of two bar and automobile outer tie rod.
