  • Currently the technology of surface finishing is highly demanded in a wide range of industries. And many kinds of surface finishing technologies have been developed for each purpose. But it is still difficult to make a fine surface for the part which has three dimensional geometry. Now most of these kinds of complex parts are polished by hand by well skilled workers, This hand work process is inefficient and the production cost is high. Therefore it is desirable to develop a new finishing technology to solve problem In this study a new device was developed and tested in various test conditions.

  • The ultra-precision machining is widely used for final machining process of precision parts, so in this study, mirror surface finishing systems using the micro abrasive film, one of ultra-precision machining method, have to examine mirror surface characteristics of the cylindrical workpiece(SM45) such as surface roughness, workpiece removal and evaluated under the condition varing film feed rate, applied pressure, grinding speed after fixing other condition. It was found that varrious machining condition have significant influences on workpiece removal, surface roughness.

  • An internal finishing process by the application of magnetic abrasive machining has been developed as a new technology to obtain a fine inner surface of non-ferromagnetic pipe. In this paper, an abrasive slurry circulation system was designed and manufactured. As a result, it was found that a fine inner surface of pipe was available by the use of these machining methods. The basic machining characteristics of pin-type magnetic tools were analyzed experimentally. In addition, the experimental results show that pin-type magnetic tools have more machining efficiency than Iron particles as magnetic tools.

  • An internal finishing process by the application of magnetic abrasive machining has been developed as a new technology to obtain a fine inner surface of pipe. In this paper, the finishing process of a non-ferromagnetic pipe by a static magnetic field method is introduced and its finishing characteristics is discussed with effective factors by various experiments. From these experimental results, it is found that the magnetic abrasives inserted in the pipe are arranged according to the magnetic force line. Through the experimental, it is possible to estimate the proper supply volume of the abrasive, which in proportional to the diameter of pipe.

  • ELID(Electrolytic In-process Dressing) grinding is an excellent technique for mirror grinding of various advanced metallic or nonmetallic materials. A polishing process is also required for elimination of scratches present on ELID grinded surfaces. MAP(Magnetic Assisted Polishing) has been used as polishing method due to its high polishing efficiency and to its resulting in a superior surface quality. This study is describing an effective fabrication method combining ELID and MAP of nano-precision mirror grinding for glass-lens molding mould. It also presents some techniques for achieving the nanometer roughness of the hard metals, such as WC-Co, which are extensively used in precision tooling material.

  • An internal finishing process by the application of magnetic abrasive machining has been developed as a new technology to obtain a fine inner surface of pipe. In this paper, a slurry circulation system was designed and manufactured. Its finishing characteristics was experimently investigated by various effective factors such as dry, water flow, oil flow with a slurry. From the experimental results, it was found that the materal removal and surface roughness were good in oil flow with slurry. The slurry circulation system is effective on the internal finishing of non-ferromagnetic pipe(SUS304).

  • An attempt to automate the surface finishing process of the die and mould has been carried out. An UMB(Ultrasonic Micro Burnishing) equipment which brought the micro plastic cold deformation to the 3D sculptured surface of mold and dies by ultrasonic vibration and static load, was developed and installed at the head stock of a vertical machining center. To be satisfied with the required surface roughness and hardness, the DB based program was also developed and applied. This equipment composes of UMB equipement, CNC vertical machining center, CAD/CAM system and the DB based program fer optimal condition. UMB processing effect was obtained from initial value Ral.25 and Hk337 to Ra0.085 and Hk521 and similar result was shown in industrial mould application.

  • Automatic finishing process requires the development of high efficient and precision abrasive machining method for dies and molds. This study describes the evaluation of the finishing characteristics, such as surfrace roughness, topography and material removal depth of the electrolytic mixed abrasive machining methods. Experimental setup is composed of 3 axis machining center, a newly developed finishing attachment with constant pressure, electrode and electrolytic bath. Finally, we achieved a successful result that surface roughness is $0.01\mu$m Ra and material removal depth is $120\mu$m using electrolytic(0.8A. 30V) mixed abrasive (#400 CBN, #320 SiC) machining method.

전해연삭을 이용한 금형의 다듬질 가공특성 (Die Finishing Process Using Electro-Chemical Grinding)

  • This paper describes the characteristic of die finishing to obtain smooth surface using electro-chemical grinding after cutting process. Electro-chemical grinding is possible under lower load and tool wear comparing with those in the mechanical grinding. Conventionally, if the metal bonding material of the grinding wheel is directly t contacted with workpiece, the current is circulated without electrolytic phenomena. Sometimes, electrical discharge is occurred between tool and workpiece. To cope with this problem, the metal-resin bonded pellet was used in this study. This pellet is composed of optimal volume of metal and resin powders and its characteristics are changable with the each volume of powders. Finally, high efficient die finishing is realized using metal resin bonded pellet in electro-chemical grinding.
