The Cr-Zr-N films have much improved mechanical properties and very smooth surface roughness. However, in spite of their outstanding properties, the Cr-Zr-N coatings revealed their mechanical properties deteriorated severely with increasing Zr content at $500^{\circ}C$ ecause of very rapid oxidation. Recently oxynitride films have been widely studied due to their excellent unique mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. In this work, CrZr-O-N films with various O contents were synthesized by unbalanced magnetron sputtering with Cr-Zr segment targets (Cr:Zr volume ratios is 1:1) and all films were prepared in a nitrogen rich mixture of N2 and O2. Characteristics such as crystalline structure, hardness and chemical composition as a function of the O content were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), microhardness testing system and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results showed that the thin films had dense and compact microstructure as O content in the films increases. The microstructure of the thin films consisted of mainly crystalline Cr (Zr)N phase and Cr2O3 phase. The maximum hardness and elastic modulus of the films was measured to be approximately 33.2 GPa and 280.6 GPa from the films with low content of O elements. Detailed experimental results will be presented.
The effect of nitrogen doping on the mechanical and tribological performance of single-layer tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:N) coatings of up to $1{\mu}m$ in thickness was investigated using a custom-made filtered cathode vacuum arc (FCVA). The results obtained revealed that the hardness of the coatings decreased from $65{\pm}4.8GPa$ to $25{\pm}2.4GPa$ with increasing nitrogen gas ratio, which indicates that nitrogen doping occurs through substitution in the $sp^2$ phase. Subsequent AES analysis showed that the N/C ratio in the ta-C:N thick-film coatings ranged from 0.03 to 0.29 and increased with the nitrogen flow rate. Variation in the G-peak positions and I(D)/I(G) ratio exhibit a similar trend. It is concluded from these results that micron-thick ta-C:N films have the potential to be used in a wide range of functional coating applications in electronics. To achieve highly conductive and wear-resistant coatings in system components, the friction and wear performances of the coating were investigated. The tribological behavior of the coating was investigated by sliding an SUJ2 ball over the coating in a ball-on-disk tribo-meter. The experimental results revealed that doping using a high nitrogen gas flow rate improved the wear resistance of the coating, while a low flow rate of 0-10 sccm increased the coefficient of friction (CoF) and wear rate through the generation of hematite (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) phases by tribo-chemical reaction. However, the CoF and wear rate dramatically decreased when the nitrogen flow rate was increased to 30-40 sccm, due to the nitrogen inducing phase transformation that produced a graphite-like structure in the coating. The widths of the wear track and wear scar were also observed to decrease with increasing nitrogen flow rate. Moreover, the G-peaks of the wear scar around the SUJ2 ball on the worn surface increased with increasing nitrogen doping.
The core-shell $SnO_2$@AO (A=Ni, Cu, Zn and Mg) films were prepared and the effects of coatings on photovoltaic properties were investigated. Studies on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and transmission electron microscopy showed the formation of divalent oxides on the surface of $SnO_2$ nanoparticles. It was commonly observed that all the dye-sensitized core-shell films exhibited higher photovoltage than the bare $SnO_2$ film. Transient photovoltage measurements confirmed that the improved photovoltages were related to the decreased time constants for electron recombination.
With different working pressures and substrate biases, Cr-Al-N coatings were deposited by hybrid physical vapor deposition (PVD) method, consisting of unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering and arc ion plating (AIP) processes. Cr and Al targets were used for the arc ion plating and the sputtering process, respectively. Phase analysis, and composition, binding energy, and microstructural analyses were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), respectively. Surface droplet size of Cr-Al-N coatings was found to decrease with increasing substrate bias. A decrease of the deposition rate of Cr-Al-N films was expected due to the increase of substrate bias. The coatings were grown with textured CrN phase and (111), (200), and (220) planes. X-ray diffraction data show that all Cr-Al-N coatings shifted to lower diffraction angles due to the addition of Al. The XPS results were used to determine the $Cr_2N$, CrN, and (Cr,Al)N binding energies. The compositions of the Cr-Al-N films were measured by XPS to be Cr 23.2~36.9 at%, Al 30.1~40.3 at%, and N 31.3~38.6 at%.
Titanium nitride(TiN) films have been prepared by HCD plasma enhanced reactive ion plating. Density and temperature of the plasma generated by the HCD were investigated. It was shown that parameters such as the substrate bias voltage(0 350V) and N2 flow rate(10 180SCCM) influenced the growth, the growth, the microstructure and the color tone of the film mostly. In order to study the interface region, surface analysis by AES combined with sputter depth profiling was performed. Microhardness of the coated TiN films were measured by micro Vickers hardness tester. Also, the effect of coating parameters on composition, coating surface and fracture morphology, grain size and growth rate were examined.
We report a method to increase the surface area of the titania films used as the anodes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by applying additional titania-coating. The modification was achieved by spin-coating a coating solution that contained a surfactant with a titania source onto the titania electrodes, followed by calcination. Previous similar attempts without a surfactant all reported decreased surface areas. We fabricated DSSCs by using the modified titania films as the anode and measured their performances. The increased surface area increased the amount of adsorbed dyes, which resulted in increased current densities. At the same time, the titania-coating increased both the open-circuit voltage and the current density by reducing the charge-recombination rates of the injected electrons, similar to the results of literatures. Therefore, our method shows an additional mechanism to increase the current density of DSSCs in addition to the other mechanisms of surface modifications with titania-coatings.
WC/C multilayered films were deposited by arc ion plating and magnetron sputter hybrid system with various $C_2$H$_2$ flow rates and bias voltages. The coatings have been characterized with respect to their chemical composition (Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy), hardness(Knoop micro-hardness), residual stress(Laser beam bending) and friction coefficient(Ball on disc type wear test). Deposition rate, microhardness and residual stress of WC/C films were observed to increase with increasing the $C_2$$H_2$ flow rates. The highest hardness and residual stress were measured to be 26.5 GPa and 1.1GPa for, WC/C film deposited at substrate bias of -100V. WC/C multilayered film was obtained very low friction coefficient(~0.1).
This work investigated the effect of duty cycle and pulse frequency on the microstructures and properties of titanium nitride thin films deposited by asymmetric bipolar pulsed DC sputtering system. Oscilloscope traces of the I-V waveforms indicate high power and high current density outputs during the asymmetric bipolar pulsed mode. The grain size decreases with decreasing duty cycle. The duty cycle has a strong influence not only on the microstructural properties but also on the mechanical properties of titanium nitride films. Comparing with the continuous DC sputtering, the titanium nitride films prepared by pulsed DC asymmetric bipolar process exhibit better properties.

We fabricated textured polycrystalline $CoFe_2O_4$ thin films on $Pt(111)/TiO_2/SiO_2/Si$ substrate through a sol-gel method. We varied the thickness of the films, by using precursor solutions with different concentrations of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 M, and by depositing 5, 8, or 10 layers on the substrate by spin-coating. X-ray diffraction spectra indicated that when the precursor concentration of the solution was higher than 0.1 M, the spin-coated films were preferentially oriented in the <111> direction. Inspection of the surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy revealed that $CoFe_2O_4$ thin films prepared with 0.2 M solution and 5-time spin-coatings had smoother surface, as compared to the other conditions. Each coating had an average thickness of about 50 nm. The magnetic properties measured by vibrating sample magnetometer showed magnetic anisotropy, as evidenced from the difference in the in-plane and out-of-plane hysteresis loops, which we attributed to the textured orientation of the $CoFe_2O_4$ thin films.
(Ti1-xAlx)N films were deposited on high speed steel and silicon substrates by reactive sputtering in mixed $Ar-N_2$ discharges. Crystalline phases and microhardness of ($Ti_1_xAl_x$)N films were investigated with variation of the film composition and substrate RF bias voltage. With Al content x of about 0.6, crystalline phase of ( $Ti_1_xAl_x$N films was changed from single-phase NaCl structure to two phase mixture of NaCl and wurtzite structures: Microhardness of ($Ti_1_xAl_x$)N films was largely improved by applying RF bias voltage above 50 V during deposition. Hardness of ($Ti_1_xAl_x$)N films reached a maximum value for Al content x of about 0.4, and 1900 kg/$mm^2$ was obtained for 1$\mu m$-thick ($Ti_{0.6}Al_{0.4}$)N films.
