Stainless steel 304 and 316 plates were deposited with the multi-layered coatings of titanium film (0.1 um) and gold film (1-2 um) by an electron beam evaporation method. The XRD patterns of the stainless steel plates modified with the multi-layered coatings showed the crystalline phases of the external gold film and the stainless steel substrate. Surface microstructural morphologies of the stainless steel bipolar plates modified with multi-layered coatings were observed by AFM and FE-SEM images. The external gold films formed on the stainless steel plates showed micro structure of grains of about 100 nm diameter. The grain size of the external surface of the stainless steel plates increased with the gold film thickness. The electrical resistance and water contact angle of the stainless steel bipolar plates covered with multi-layered coatings were examined with the thickness of the external gold film.
AZ91D casting alloy requires an advanced plasma anodizing processing because large amount of defects are liable to generate during anodization. In this study, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of AZ91D Mg alloy was conducted by the application of either constant voltage or current using a pulse mode and its effects on pore formation, surface roughness and corrosion resistance were investigated. The PEO films showed a three-layer structure. The PEO film thickness was found to increase linearly with voltage. The surface roughness, Ra, ranged between $0.2{\mu}m$ and $0.3{\mu}m$. The corrosion resistance increased from RN 3.5 to 9.5 by the PEO treatment when evaluated according to the 72 hour salt spray test. The PEO-treated surface exhibited higher pitting potential than the raw material.
Type 304SS coatings were performed at 200$\square$ onto AISI 1045 carbon steel substrate using unbalanced magnetron sputtering (UBMS) with an austenitic AISI 304 stainless steel (SS) target of 100mm diameter. The total deposition pressure in the active Ar gas was 2$\times$10$^{-3}$ Torr. Coatings were done at various target power densities and bias voltages. Chemical compositions of metallic elements of the coatings were measured by energy dispersive X-rays spectroscopy (EDS). The structure and the morphology of Type 304SS coatings were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Corrosion properties of the coated specimens were examined using electrochemical polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a deaerated 3.5% NaCl solution. The porosity rate was obtained from a comparison of the dc polarization resistance of the uncoated and coated substrates. Scratch adhesion testing was used to compare the critical loads for different coatings. XRD results showed that the sputtered films exhibit a ferritic b.c.c. $\alpha$-phase. Potentiodynamic polarization curves indicated that all samples had much higher corrosion potential and better corrosion resistance than the bare steel substrate. The corrosion performance increased with increasing power density and the adhesion was enhanced at the bias voltage of -50V. An improvement in the corrosion resistance can be obtained with a better coating adhesion. Finally, an optimized deposition condition for corrosion protection was found as $40W/cm^2$ and -50V.
Ti-Cu-N nanocomposite films deposited by arc ion plating and magnetron sputter hybrid system with various copper contents. The microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-Cu-N superhard nanocomposite films depend on the Cu concentration. In X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, intensity of TiN (111) and TiN (220) peak decreased and peak broadness increased with increasing the copper contents and Cu peak was not detected. The grain size of films decreased with increasing at%Cu and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis also showed that Ti-Cu-N film containing 1.5at%Cu was composed of very fine (<10nm) nanocrystalline grains. The maximum hardness of Ti-Cu-N (1.5at%Cu) film reached to 45GPa and friction coefficient was measured 0.3.
Titanium nitride (TiN) thin films are widely used for hard coatings due to their superior hardness, chemical stability, low friction and good adhesion properties. In this study, we investigated the effect of DC power on the characteristics of TiN thin films deposited on Si and glass substrates by DC magnetron sputtering using TiN target. We made TiN films of 300 nm thickness with various DC powers. The structural properties of films are investigated by x-ray diffractions (XRD) and tribological properties are measured by nano-indentation, nano-scratch tester. The rms roughness was measured by atomic forced microscopy (AFM). In the result, TiN films had the smooth surface and exhibited (111) directions with the increase of DC Power. Also, especially in case of 175 W DC power, TiN film exhibited the maximum hardness about 8 GPa, and the critical load near 25.
Transparent Conductive Oxide (TCO), especially Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) films are almost prepared by DC magnetron sputtering because of the advantage of obtaining homogeneous large area coatings with high reproducibility. The purpose of this report is describe a detailed investigation of key factors dominating electrical and structural properties of sputtered ITO films. It was confirmed that crystallinity and electrical properties of ITO films were strongly depend on the sputtering pressure and kinetic energy of sputtered particles which are expected to have a close relation with the transport processes between target and substrate. And also, nodule formation on the ITO target was suppressed by both $CaCO_3$ addition and decreasing micro-pore in the target. On the other hand, we focused on the characteristics of amorphous TCO film to use as transparent electrode for various applications. To realize high thermoelectric performance, it was tried to control both high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity for the amorphous IZO:Sn films.
A large area negative metal ion beam source is developed. Kinetic ion beam of the incident metal ions yields a whole nucleation and growth phenomena compared to the conventional thin film deposition processes. At the initial deposition step one can engineer the surface and interface by tuning the energy of the incident metal ion beams. Smoothness and shallow implantation can be tailored according to the desired application process. Surface chemistry and nucleation process is also controlled by the energy of the direct metal ion beams. Each individual metal ion beams with specific energy undergoes super-thermodynamic reactions and nucleation. degree of formation of tetrahedral Sp3 carbon films and beta-carbon nitride directly depends on the energy of the ion beams. Grain size and formation of polycrystalline Si, at temperatures lower than 500deg. C is obtained and controlled by the energy of the incident Si-ion beams. The large area metal ion source combines the advantages of those magnetron sputter and SKIONs prior cesium activated metal ion source. The ion beam source produces uniform amorphous diamond films over 6 diameter. The films are now investigated for applications such as field emission display emitter materials, protective coatings for computer hard disk and head, and other protective optical coatings. The performance of the ion beam source and recent applications will be presented.
Metal containing hydrogen free nanocrystalline structured carbon (Me:nc-C) films were synthesized by closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering system (CFUBM). The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the microstructure and physical properties of Me:nc-C films as a function of the concentration of materials. The film structures were examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The physical properties of the Me:nc-C films were evaluated by using a 4-point probe. The fraction of graphite clusters was found to be increased by containing titanium and the electrical resistivity decreased with increasing amount of containing.
Microstructural and mechanical properties of the TiN films deposited on Si substrates under various substrate bias voltages by a reactive magnetron sputtering have been studied. It was found that the crystallographic texture, microstructural morphology and mechanical property of the TiN films were strongly depended on the substrate bias voltage. TiN films deposited without bias exhibited a mixed (200)-(111) texture with a strong (200) texture, which subsequently changed to a strong (111) texture with increasing bias voltage. It is also observed that the crystallite size decreases with increasing bias voltage, which corresponds to the increasing diffraction peak width of XRD patterns. The average surface roughness was calculated from AFM images of the films; these results indicated that the average surface roughness was increased with an increase in the bias voltage of the coatings.
Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coatings with a double cermets layer film structure were prepared using a special direct current (dc) magnetron sputtering technology. The typical films structures from surface to bottom substrate were measured to be an $Al_2O_3$ anti-reflection layer on a double Cr-CrO cermet layer on an Al metal infrared reflection layer. Optical properties of optimized Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coating were absorptance (${\alpha}$) = 0.95 and emittance (${\varepsilon}$) = 0.10 ($100^{\circ}C$). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) image showed that Cr-CrO cermet film was very smooth and their grain size was also very small The results of thermal stability test showed that the Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coatings were stable for use at temperature of $400^{\circ}C$.
