  • In this paper a new technique of inverse fairing problem for ship hull is proposed. Recently Lu solved the inverse fairing problem for automobile's body that was made by one surface element. In this system however hull surface is constructed by Gregory's composite surface interpolation method. So reflection line at boundary position is used as a tool of solving inverse problem in surface fairing. But the results are not good. The new concepts of Normal vector line and Constrained reflection line are introduced as an alternative tool. Energy minimization method for Normal Vector Line curve net and the inverse method for Constrained Reflection Line by using optimization technique are examined And the final lines from this proposed surface fairing method shows good fairness.

  • Launch vehicles are exposed to aerodynamic heating conditions while flying at high Mach numbers in the atmosphere. In this study aerodynamic heating test for fairing nose-cone was done using ATSF(Aerodynamic Thermal Simulation Facility) and Engineering Model for fairing. ATSF is a facility that can simulate given temperature profile using about 4,000 halogen heaters on fairing model. Aerodynamic heating profile is got from result of thermal analysis using MINIVER, Thermal Desktop and SINDA/FLUINT. After aerodynamic heat test, it is found that initial temperature of fairing inner surface and thickness of BMS has important effects on temperature of fairing inner surface. Also it is confirmed that maximum temperature of fairing nose-cone inner surface during flight is lower than allowable temperature limit. Later, thermal correlation between thermal analysis and experimental results will be done using aerodynamic heating test result

  • In reverse engineering, existing products are digitized fur the computer modeling. Using the digitized data, surfaces are modeled for new products. However, in the digitizing process measuring errors or deviations can be happened often in practice. Thus, it is important to adjust such errors or deviations during the computer modeling. To adjust the errors, fairing of the modeled surfaces is performed. In this paper, we present a surface fairing algorithm based on various fairness metrics. Fairness metrics can be discrete. We adopt discrete metrics for fairing given 3D point set. The fairness metrics include discrete principal curvatures. In this paper, automatic fairing process is proposed for fairing given 3D point sets for surfaces. The process uses various fairness criteria so that it is adequate to adopt designers'intents.

  • KARI is developing a satellite launch vehicle that is called KSLV(Korea Space Launch Vehicle)-I. During the flight, launch vehicles are exposed to aerodynamic heating conditions while flying at high Mach numbers in the atmosphere. KARI constructed Aerodynamic Thermal Simulation Facility to simulate aerodynamic heating on the ground. ATSF is a facility that can simulate given temperature profile using about 4,000 halogen heaters on fairing model. Aerodynamic heating profile is got from result of thermal analysis using MINIVER, Thermal Desktop, and SINDA/FLUINT. Aerodynamic heating test of fairing of KSLV-I was done using engineering model of payload fairing and Aerodynamic Thermal Simulation Facility. It was found that thermal analytic results show good agreement with aerodynamic heating test results within 6$^{\circ}$C at fairing inner surface. Also it was confirmed that maximum temperature of fairing nose-cone inner surface during flight is lower than allowable temperature limit.

  • When a geometric modeling of a hull form for ship design and hull production is done, a hull fairing is a tedious process which wastes a lot of time, but it is unavoidable because hull consist of the sculptured surfaces. This paper presents the mathematical method of the direct fairing to overcome the tediousness of cross fairing. Bi-cubic B-spline surface description was adopted for the representation of the hull surface. The fairing process was executed by minimizing the strain energy in a shell plate. The color-encoded Gaussian curvature and strain energy were visualized on the screen to illustrate the fairness of the surface. The geometric information generated from the faired hull surface model was interfaced with the basic design calculation package and the hull production system.

  • The surface modeling capability of CAD systems is widely used to design products bounded by free form surfaces and curves. However, the surfaces or curves generated by popular data fitting methods usually have shape imperfections such as wiggles. Thus, fairing operations are required to remove the wiggles, which makes the surfaces or curves smooth. This paper proposes a new method based on the wavelet transform for fairing the surfaces or curves while preserving the continuity with adjacent surfaces or curves. The wavelet transform gives a hierarchical perspective of the surfaces and the curves, which can be decomposed into the overall sweep and details, i.e., local deviations from sweep like the wiggles. The proposed fairing method provides a similar effect on the mathematical surface as that of the grinding operation using sandpaper on the physical surface.

  • The needs for smooth curves and surfaces are increasing in modeling cars, ships, airplanes, and other consumer products either for aesthetic or functional purpose. However, the curves and surfaces generated by conventional modeling methods usually exhibit an unwanted behavior due to digitizing errors or inadequate generation method, and thus much time and extra effort is spent afterwards to get the faired results. The objective of this work is to develop a fairing scheme by which well refined shape of a surface can be acquired with detecting and removing the shape imperfections of the given surface represented by NURBS. The fairing scheme is based on an optimization process in which the control points of the given surface are repositioned to minimize the integration of the jumps(perturbations) of the unit normal vectors at all surface points.

  • This paper presents a fairing method for reverse engineering of a free-formed surface. Utilizing measured data points, reverse engineering is a useful method to construct a CAD model from physical model. Measured data points should be faired since raw data may have outliers. A fairing algorithm of polynomial regression model generates smooth curves of approximation in this paper. The faired curves are utilized to construct a free-formed surface. For a verifying example, an impeller blade is digitized with a CMM to collect raw data on the surfacce and a CAD model is constructed. This research produces impeller blades with 5-axis machining center through the CAD model and compares them with a physical model. As a result the produced surface modeled with the fairing method gives less error than that without the fairing.

  • In the reverse engineering, surfaces are modeled for new products by interpolating the digitized data points obtained by measuring the existing shapes. However, many measuring or deviation errors are happened during the measuring process. If these errors are ignored, designers could get undesirable results. Therefore, it is important to handle such errors and fairing procedure with the esthetics criteria is needed during surface modeling process. This paper presents algorithms for the fairing of B-spline surfaces. The algorithms are based on automatic repositioning of control points for B-spline surfaces. New positions of the control points are determined by solving a non-linear programming of which the objective functions are derived variously using derived surfaces and constraints are established by distance measures between the original and the modified control points. Changes in surface shapes are analyzed by illustrations of their shapes and continuous plotting of gaussian and mean curvatures.

  • The assessment of machined surface is difficult because the freeform surface must be evaluated by surface fairness as well as dimensional accuracy. In this study, the machined freeform surface is modeled by interpolating the data measured on the machine tool into the mathematical continuous surface, and then the surface model is improved with the parameterization to minimize surface fairness. The accuracy reliability of the measured data is confirmed through compensation of volumetric errors of the machine tool and of probing errors. Non-uniform B-spline surface interpolation method is adopted to guarantee the continuity of surface model. Surface fairness is evaluated with the consideration of normal curvature on the interpolated surface. The validity and usefulness of the proposed method is examined through computer simulation and experiment on the machine tool.
