In this study, it has been tried to make the single Mo-Cu alloying targets with the Cu showing the best surface hardness that was determined by investigation on the coatings with the double target process. The single alloying targets were prepared by powder metallurgy methods such as mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. The nanocomposite coatings were prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering process with the single alloying targets in $Ar+N_2$ atmosphere. The microstructure changes of the Mo-Cu-N coatings with diverse Cu contents were investigated by using XRD, SEM and EDS. The mechanical properties of the coatings were evaluated by using nano-indentor, scratch test, and ball on disc methods. Especially, the coated samples were tested by using various lubricating oil to compare the property of anti wear-resistance. In this study, the nano-composite MoN-Cu coatings prepared using an alloying target was eventually compared with the coatings from the multiple targets.
The surface of Alloy 600 was alloyed using a continuous wave $CO_2$ laser beam in order to improve its corrosion resistance. Laser surface alloying (LSA) was done by melting the surface electroplated with Cr of the alloy. The Cr concentration of the alloyed surface was 28-30 at.%, which is similar to that of Alloy 690. Alloying elements in the alloyed layer was observed to be distributed very homogeneously all over the alloyed region. According to the electrochemical and modified Huey tests, the corrosion resistance, in particular the grain boundary corrosion resistance, of the LSA specimens was significantly improved, compared with that of the as-received(AR) specimen. This improved corrosion resistance of the alloyed specimen might be attributed to the high Cr content which could make possible formation of more stable and dense passive film onto its surface.
Surface alloying using TiC, $TiB_2$ and VC ceramic particles on carbon steel has been performed using high voltage electron beam. Each type of ceramic particles was mixed with flux of Al and $MgF_2$ in 1 to 4 ratio. The microstructures of the surface alloyed layers consisted of melted region, interface region. heat affected region and the unaffected matrix. The surface layer of the TiC surface alloyed had a cubed primary and a eutectic type of TiC. $TiB_2$ in surface layer of $TiB_2$ surface alloyed were incompletely melted with$ TiB_2$ particles as observed before the alloying. On the surface layer of the VC surface alloyed, very well defined cell structure was observed with VC on the cell boundary. In addition, ~50 nm in diameter VC particles in high density were ubiquitous in the matrix. Those fine VC particles prominently improved the hardness and wear resistance of the surface layer of the VC surface alloyed.
Surface alloying of Ti alloy by $CO_2$ laser is able to produce few hundred micrometers thick TiN or TiC surface-alloyed layer with high hardness on the substrate by injecting reaction gas($N_2$ or $CH_4$). Laser surface alloying by means of process control is in many applications essential in order to obtain predictable hardening layer. This research has been investigated the effect of such parameters on TiN and TiC gas alloying of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by $CO_2$ laser. The maximum surface hardness of TiN layer was obtained 1750Hv on the conditions of 0.8kW laser power, 0.8m/min scanning speed and 100% $N_2$ atmosphere. However, the maximum hardness of TiC formation layer after laser treatment was about 630Hv. As scanning speed was increased, the hardness and depth of these layers were decreased at constant laser power.
Ti-6Al-4V alloy are widely used in chemical and aircraft industries for their good corrosion resistance and high strength to weight ratio. Surface alloying of Ti alloy by $CO_2$ laser is able to produce few hundred micrometers thick TiN surface-alloyed layer with high hardness on the substrate very simplely by injecting reaction gas($N_2$) into a laser-generated melt pool and adjust the hardness to the specific requirements of the individual application by changing of laser processing parameters. This research has been investigated the effect of such parameters on TiN surface-alloying of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by $CO_2$ laser. The maximum hardness of TiN surface-alloyed zone waw obtained by injecting 100% $N_2$ gas and it was decreased as the amount of $N_2$ gas in Ar and $N_2$ gas mixture was decreased. As scanning speed was increased, the hardness and depth of TiN surface-alloyed zone was decreased at constant laser power. The surface hardness after double scanning laser treatment is higher than that of single scanning. At constant laser power, the surface roughness is increased after the surface alloying if laser scanning speed is decreased.
For a development purpose of thick metal / metal Graded-Boundary Materials(GBM), a basic research on the fabrication of Ni-Cr/steel GBM was carried out by a laser beam and its mechanical properties and thermal characteristics were investigated. In order to produce a compositionally graded boundary region between substrate steel and added Ni-Cr alloy, a series of surface alloying treatments was performed with a high power CO$_2$ laser beam. Ni-Cr sheet was placed on a low carbon steel plate(0.18%C), and then a CO$_2$ laser beam was irradiated on the surface to produce a homogeneous alloyed layer. On this first surface-alloyed layer, another Ni-Cr sheet was placed and then the CO$_2$ laser beam was irradiated again to produce second surface-alloyed layer. Sequential repetitions of laser surface alloying treatment 4 times resulted in a graded-boundary region with the thickness of about 1.4mm. Simultaneous concentration profiles of different kinds of alloying elements(Ni and Cr) showed from 42%Ni, 45%Cr and 13%Fe on surface region to 0%Ni, 0%Cr and 99%Fe in substrate region. Also a thermal conductivity gradient resulted in graded-region and its value changed from 0.03㎈/cm s$\^{C}$ in surface region to 0.1㎈/cm s$\^{C}$ in substrate region. Microstructural observation showed that any visible root porosities and solidification shrinkage cracks were not formed in graded region between alloyed layer and substrate region during rapid cooling.
MoN-Cu thin films were prepared to achieve appropriate properties of high hardness and low friction coefficient, which could be applied to automobile engine parts for reducing energy consumption as well as solving wear problems. Composite thin films of MoN-Cu have been deposited by various processes using multiple targets such as Mo and Cu. However, those deposition with multiple targets revealed demerits such as difficulties in exact control of composition and homogeneous deposition. This study is aiming for suggesting an appropriate process to solve those problems. A single alloying target of Mo-Cu (10 at%) was prepared by powder metallurgy methods of mechanical alloying (MA) and spar plasma sintering (SPS). Thin film of MoN-Cu was then deposited by magnetron sputtering using the single alloying target of Mo-Cu (10 at%). Properties of the resulting MoN-Cu thin film were examined and compared to those of MoN-Cu thin films prepared with double targets of Mo and Cu.
Effects of alloying elements on the pitting behavior of Ti-Al intermetalic compounds in the electrolytic soution containing Cl- were investigated through electrochemical tets and corrosion morphologies. Corrosion potential increased in the case of Cr addition to Ti-48%Al, whereas it decreased in the case of Si and B addition. The simultaneous addition of Cr and Si increased passive current density and decrosion corrosion potential. The passive current density of N addtion was higher than that of B addition in H2SO4 solution. With the addition of alloying elements, The pitting resistance decreased in order of TiAl>TiAlSi>TiAlN>TiAlB>TiAlCr and whin siumultaneous addition, it decreased in order of TiAlCrSi>TiAlCrBN>TiAlCrrN. The surface merohology after pitting test showed that the TiAl coataining Si had for fewer pits than that containing Cr and N simultaneously.
The effects of risering design and alloying element on the formation of defects such as external depression, primary and secondary shrinkage cavities in ductile cast iron were investigated. Two types of risering design for the cylindrically step-wise specimen, No. 1(progressive solidification) and No. 2(directional solidification) risering designs, were prepared and six different alloy compositions were casted. In the No. 1 risering design, external depression or primary shrinkage cavities due to liquid contraction were observed in all the specimens from SG 10 to SG 60. The defects caused by liquid contraction seemed to be more affected by risering design than alloying elements. The secondary shrinkage cavities were also observed in all the specimens but a swollen surface was not observed in all the castings. The primary shrinkage cavities were located right under the top surface or connected to the top surface, and were characterized by smooth surfaces. On the other hand, the secondary shrinkage cavities were positioned in the thermal center of the specimen steps 3 and 4, and characterized by rough surfaces. In the No. 2 risering design, no external depression or primary shrinkage cavities due to liquid contraction were observed in all the specimens from SG 10 to SG 60. However, the secondary shrinkage cavities were formed in the thermal center of specimens SG 40, 50 and 60. Like the No. 1 risering design, a swollen surface was not observed in all the castings.
In order to explain the effect of alloying Cu on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels in chloride media for both ferritic and austenitic stainless steels, the corrosion behavior of Cu-bearing stainless steels was investigated. Alloying Cu showed beneficial effect in an active potential range and harmful effect in a noble potential range. The beneficial effect of alloying Cu was explained by the stability of deposited Cu on an anodic surface. Difference in the effect of alloying Cu between the ferritic and austenitic steels was ascribed by the differences in their corrosion potentials and the morphology of the deposited Cu.
