Illumination estimation based on valid pixel selection from CCD camera response (CCD카메라 응답으로부터 유효 화소 선택에 기반한 광원 추정)

  • This paper proposes a method for estimating the illuminant chromaticity using the distributions of the camera responses obtained by a CCD camera in a real-world scene. Illuminant estimation using a highlight method is based on the geometric relation between a body and its surface reflection. In general, the pixels in a highlight region are affected by an illuminant geometric difference, camera quantization errors, and the non-uniformity of the CCD sensor. As such, this leads to inaccurate results if an illuminant is estimated using the pixels of a CCD camera without any preprocessing. Accordingly, to solve this problem the proposed method analyzes the distribution of the CCD camera responses and selects pixels using the Mahalanobis distance in highlight regions. The use of the Mahalanobis distance based on the camera responses enables the adaptive selection of valid pixels among the pixels distributed in the highlight regions. Lines are then determined based on the selected pixels with r-g chromaticity coordinates using a principal component analysis(PCA). Thereafter, the illuminant chromaticity is estimated based on the intersection points of the lines. Experimental results using the proposed method demonstrated a reduced estimation error compared with the conventional method.

Reliable Study on the Collision Analysis of Traffic Accidents Using PC-Crash Program (PC-Crash 프로그램을 이용한 교통사고 충돌해석에 관한 신뢰성 연구)

  • Automobile collision analysis is composed of various shapes, and the speed variation working to the vehicle during collision are utilized as a very important factor in evaluating the degree of vehicle collision or passenger safety. So, the method of analyzing result values on the speed variation utilizing collision analysis program become necessary. This study utilized PC-Crash program in order to compare actual values and analyzed values of braking distance with the friction coefficient of road surface according to vehicle velocity. As a result, the smaller friction coefficient found to be larger error, and the maximum error range of collision velocity in case of each different vehicles (MATIZ, SONATA, or BUS) at the intersection showed 1.2%, 1.8%, 3.1% according to the difference of vehicle weight. Moreover, an accidental fall at IN-CHEON large bridge in order to reappear was verified with practicing simulation which has a slight error.

  • It is very important to evaluate material degradation like temper and carbide embrittlements to secure the reliable and efficient operational conditions and to prevent brittle failure in service. The extent of material deterioration can be accurately evaluated by mechanical test such as impact test or creep test. But it is almost impossible to sample a large specimen from in-service plants. Thus, the material degradation evaluation by a non-destructive method is earnestly required. Recently the non-destructive test technique which uses the grain boundary etching characteristics owing to the variation of material structures has been proposed. However the program for material degradation evaluation using the grain boundary etching method(GEM) in Windows 98 domain doesnt be developed now. The aims of this paper are to develop the program and to complete the new master curve equations for the evaluation of material degradation on in-serviced high temperature components.

Three-dimensional Stability Analysis for an Underground Disposal Research Tunnel (지하처분연구시설에 대한 3차원 터널 안정성 해석)

  • If an underground research facility for the validation of disposal concept is constructed in KAERI, it is expected to have a thick weathered zone and varying surface topology. In this study, the influence of different geological conditions, tunnel slope, tunnel size, and sequential excavation is investigated by 3D mechanical analysis using FLAC3D. Around the tunnel, it is not expected to develop any plastic zone and the maximum stress might be as high as 5 ㎫. The maximum compressive stress will be developed at about 20 m to e dead end of the tunnel. There is no difference on stress and displacement distributions between the cases with and without sequential excavation. It is expected to have stress release in the roof and floor after the excavation of the tunnel. There is no significant influence of weathered zone size, tunnel size, and tunnel slope on the stress and displacement distributions. The modeling for the intersection shows the minimum factor of safety is above 3, when the in situ stress ratio K is 3. From the study, it was possible to demonstrate that the small scale disposal research tunnel in KAERI will be mechanically stable.

  • An analytical model for predicting the shear strength of prestressed concrete beams was developed, applying the previously proposed strain-based shear strength model. In flexure-compression member without shear reinforcement, compression zone of intact concrete primarily resist to the shear force rather than tension zone. The shear capacity of concrete at the compression zone was defined based on the material failure criteria. The shear capacity of the compression zone was evaluated along the inclined failure surface considering interaction with the normal stress. Since the distribution of normal stress varies due to the flexural deformation of member, the shear capacity was defined as a function of the flexural deformation. Finally, the shear strength was determined at the intersection of the shear capacity curve and the shear demand curve. As a result of the comparisons to prior test data, the proposed model accurately predicted the shear strength of specimens.

Study on Usability and Structure of the Mechanical Pencil (샤프펜슬의 사용편의성과 그 구조에 관한 연구)

  • I made the three main estimated head about the facility of mechanical pencil which we always use in normal days. The head are these, the first is apparent usability by experiment, the second is the feeling when grasping, the third is the feeling when writing. After making the head, 1 selected the head which give the effect to the facility and make sure the interaction between heads by the method of actual test with 36 samples. After this test, 1 can find that there is no high interaction between the facility and the intuitively feeling by experiment. It's because the expectation which was made by experiment for the facility is higher than the real. but there is high interaction between the feeling of wearing and the feeling of writing. The mechanical pencil which has good facility is that the total length is long(169mm), the thickness is big($\Phi$8.5mm), the weight is little bit heavy(21.4g), the intersection is not circle, the surface where is hold by fingers has across grooves, and the body is glossy.

  • Intrusive Vehicle Detectors have excellent detection performance compared to other types of detector, but disadvantages of high installation and maintenance costs, short life time due to greater damage to roads and paving materials. In contrast, Non-Intrusive Vehicle Detectors attached to the stationary pole have advantages because it does not damage the road surface and easy and less expensive to maintain. Despite these advantages, Non-Intrusive type detectors are still not been widely used in traffic signal control systems because of the low detection performance. In this study, a FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar Vehicle Detector was designed as an alternative detector for the signalized intersection, and the performance evaluation was presented by purpose applicability.

Object Detection and Post-processing of LNGC CCS Scaffolding System using 3D Point Cloud Based on Deep Learning (딥러닝 기반 LNGC 화물창 스캐닝 점군 데이터의 비계 시스템 객체 탐지 및 후처리)

  • Recently, quality control of the Liquefied Natural Gas Carrier (LNGC) cargo hold and block-erection interference areas using 3D scanners have been performed, focusing on large shipyards and the international association of classification societies. In this study, as a part of the research on LNGC cargo hold quality management advancement, a study on deep-learning-based scaffolding system 3D point cloud object detection and post-processing were conducted using a LNGC cargo hold 3D point cloud. The scaffolding system point cloud object detection is based on the PointNet deep learning architecture that detects objects using point clouds, achieving 70% prediction accuracy. In addition, the possibility of improving the accuracy of object detection through parameter adjustment is confirmed, and the standard of Intersection over Union (IoU), an index for determining whether the object is the same, is achieved. To avoid the manual post-processing work, the object detection architecture allows automatic task performance and can achieve stable prediction accuracy through supplementation and improvement of learning data. In the future, an improved study will be conducted on not only the flat surface of the LNGC cargo hold but also complex systems such as curved surfaces, and the results are expected to be applicable in process progress automation rate monitoring and ship quality control.

ANALYSIS OF ANGBU-ILGU, A STONE MATERIAL IN THE LATE JOSEON DYNASTY (조선 후기 석제 앙부일구 분석)

  • This study investigated the stone Angbu-ilgu (scaphe sundial) of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and the Seoul Museum of History (SMH). Since the first Angbu-ilgu was produced in Korea in 1434 (the year of the reign of King Sejong), Angbu-ilgu has been reproduced with various materials. The upper surface of these two stone Angbu-ilgus symbolizes the horizon. On the hemisphere concave at the center of the horizon, the South Pole, the time line, and the season line are engraved. On the horizon of both the KMA and SMH Angbu-ilgus, the schematic, typeface, and composition of the inscription completely coincide with each other. In this study, it was estimated that the appearance of the KMA Angbu-ilgu, which was damaged at some point previously at least once, was similar to that of the SMH Angbu-ilgu, and this means that it is superficially similar with Treasure No 840, the stone horizontal sundial. In the concave hemisphere of both the stone Angbu-ilgus of the KMA and SMH, there are hour lines and 24 solar-term lines (13 line), and there is an intersection point where these lines meet the horizon, respectively. It can be verified that these intersections of these two Angbu-ilgus can be calculated as having a latitude of +37°39'15". The hour lines of the two stone Angbu-ilgus show that they were made after about 1900.

Synthetic data augmentation for pixel-wise steel fatigue crack identification using fully convolutional networks

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) plays an important role in ensuring the safety and functionality of critical civil infrastructure. In recent years, numerous researchers have conducted studies to develop computer vision and machine learning techniques for SHM purposes, offering the potential to reduce the laborious nature and improve the effectiveness of field inspections. However, high-quality vision data from various types of damaged structures is relatively difficult to obtain, because of the rare occurrence of damaged structures. The lack of data is particularly acute for fatigue crack in steel bridge girder. As a result, the lack of data for training purposes is one of the main issues that hinders wider application of these powerful techniques for SHM. To address this problem, the use of synthetic data is proposed in this article to augment real-world datasets used for training neural networks that can identify fatigue cracks in steel structures. First, random textures representing the surface of steel structures with fatigue cracks are created and mapped onto a 3D graphics model. Subsequently, this model is used to generate synthetic images for various lighting conditions and camera angles. A fully convolutional network is then trained for two cases: (1) using only real-word data, and (2) using both synthetic and real-word data. By employing synthetic data augmentation in the training process, the crack identification performance of the neural network for the test dataset is seen to improve from 35% to 40% and 49% to 62% for intersection over union (IoU) and precision, respectively, demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed approach.
