  • Surface tension as a function of concentration and temperature was measured for aquous solution of sodium N-acyl sarcosinate, $RCON(CH_{3})CH_{2}$ COONa, From the intersection points in the (${\gamma}-logC$) curves, the critical micelle concentration (cmc) was determined at 20, 30, 40, and $50^{\circ}C$. Structural effects on the cmc maximum and the minimum area per molecule at the aquous solution/air interface were discussed. The free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of micellization and adsorption of surfactant solution also were investigated. Numberous investigators have dealt with sodium N-acyl sarcosinates and their applications as wettings, flooding and reducing agents and as corrosion inhibitors.

  • Let $M_g$ be the moduli space of isomorphism classes of genus g smooth curves. It is a quasi-projective variety of dimension 3g - 3, when $g > 2$. It is known that a complete subvariety of $M_g$ has dimension $< g-1 [D]$. In general it is not known whether this bound is rigid. For example, it is not known whether $M_4$ has a complete surface in it. But one knows that there is a complete curve through any given finite points [H]. Recently, an explicit example of a complete curve in moduli space is given in [G-H]. In [G-H] they constructed a complete curve of $M_3$ as an intersection of five hypersurfaces of the Satake compactification of $M_3$. One way to get a complete curve of $M_3$ is to find a complete one dimensional family $p : X \to B$ of plane quartics which gives a nontrivial morphism from the base space B to the moduli space $M_3$. This is because every non-hyperelliptic smooth curve of genus three can be realized as a nonsingular plane quartic and vice versa. This paper has come out from the effort to find such a complete family of plane quartics. Since nonsingular quartics form an affine space some fibers of p must be singular ones. In this paper, due to the semistable reduction theorem [M], we search singular plane quartics which can occur as singular fibers of the family above. We first list all distinct plane quartics in terms of singularities.

  • The offsetting method using geometric properties of B-spline control polygon is more faster than using of general normal vector in offset processing. But this method itself does not solve the prob¬lems of loop removal in normal offsetting. Generally the distance between neighborhood spans of B-spline control polygon is greater than the offset distance, the loops are occurred in offsetting. For generating of the more precision tool-path in NC machining, the loops of offset must be removed. In this paper, two methods for loop removal are introduced in offsetting of B-spline curve. One is using the intersection of B-spline control span which being occurred of the loop. The other is using two B-spline curve divisions divided from original B-spline curve or its offset curve. After the inter¬section point of loop was searched, the loop being removed to cusp. Also the method for filleting of cusp is inspected to more precision cutting. It is shown that the offsetting using B-spline control polygon is more effective in the sculptured surface machining.

  • Of all the rapid tooling (RT) methods currently available, thick-layer laminated tooling is the most suitable for large-scale, low-cost dies and molds. Currently, the determination of a lamina's contour or profile and the associated slicing algorithms are based on existing rapid prototyping (RP) data manipulation technology. This paper presents a new adaptive slicing algorithm developed exclusively for profiled edge laminae (PEL) tooling PEL tooling is a thick-layer RT technique that involves the assembly of an array of laminae, whose top edges are simultaneously profiled and beveled using a line-of-sight cutting method based on a CAD model of the intended tool surface. The cutting profiles are based on the intersection curve obtained directly from the CAD model to ensure geometrical accuracy. The slicing algorithm determines the lamina thicknesses that minimize the dimensional error using a new tool shape error index. At the same time, the algorithm considers the available lamination thicknesses and desired lamina interface locations. We demonstrate the new slicing algorithm by developing a simple industrial PEL tool based on a CAD part shape.

  • Electrochemical behaviours on 1.0 mM methylviologen ($MV^{2+}$) in 100 mM NaCl+27 mM $MgCl_2$ solution, without and with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), were studied. The intersection of two lines on ${\Delta}E_p$ (the difference between the anodic, $E_{pa}$, and the cathodic, $E_{pc}$, peak potentials) of the first and second redox waves vs. -log[SDS] plot was determined as a critical micelle concentration (CMC). When $Mg^{2+}$ was added, the effective access of $MV{\cdot}^+$ to the glassy carbon electrode surface became possible and the formation of micelles was retarded.

  • This paper presents a method for rapid wire frame drawing of the 3D objects represented by the CSG scheme. When the two CSG trees are combined into one, the intersection parts of the polygons constituting the object corresponds to each subtree are computed, and the boundary representation of the combined object is obtained according to the given combinational operator and stored in the root node. The boundary representation in the root node is used in the wireframe drawing of the object and later computation of boundary representation. Bezier surface is taken as one of the primitive object the scan-line algorithm is used, which subdivides each scan-line into the spans where no polygon is intersected, and renders each span with the CSG representation of the object.

  • In this paper, a ship calculation program is developed, which prof[nuts hydrostatics and volume calculation intact and damage stability and hull variation. Hull form and compartment geometry are expressed with NURBS curve wire-frame model. Hydrostatics and volume calculation are performed directly with the intersection method between section geometry and 3D planar surface. Equilibrium ship position is calculated with hydrostatic equilibrium equation which is linearized by 1st order Taylor series expansion sequentially. The developed program shows more accurate results and easy uses than the latter.

  • This paper describes an approach to analyze geometrical information of building images for understanding outdoor environment of autonomous navigation robot. Line segments and color information are used to classily a building with the other objects such as sky, trees, and roads. The line segments and their two neighboring regions are extracted from detected edges in image. The model of line segment (MLS) consists of color information of neighbor regions. This model rules out the line segments of non-building face. A building face converges into dominant vanishing points (DVPs) which include one vertical point and one of five horizontal points in maximum. The intersection of vertical and horizontal lines creates a facet of building. The geometrical characteristics such as the center coordinates, area, aspect ratio and aligned coexistence are used for extracting the windows in the building facet. In experiments, 150 building faces and 1607 windows were detected from the database of outdoor environment. We found that this result shows 94.46% detection rate. These experimental images were all taken in Ulsan metropolitan city in Korea under difference of viewpoints, daytime, camera system and weather condition.

  • This paper presents investigations on the hysteretic behavior of concrete-filled circular tubular (CFCT) T-joints subjected to axial cyclic loading at brace end. In the experimental study, four specimens are fabricated and tested. The chord members of the tested specimens are filled with concrete along their full length and the braces are hollow section. Failure modes and load-displacement hysteretic curves of all the specimens obtained from experimental tests are given and discussed. Some indicators, in terms of stiffness deterioration, strength deterioration, ductility and energy dissipation, are analyzed to assess the seismic performance of CFCT joints. Test results indicate that the failures are primarily caused by crack cutting through the chord wall, convex deformation on the chord surface near brace/chord intersection and crushing of the core concrete. Hysteretic curves of all the specimens are plump, and no obvious pinching phenomenon is found. The energy dissipation result shows that the inelastic deformation is the main energy dissipation mechanism. It is also found from experimental results that the CFCT joints show clear and steady stiffness deterioration with the increase of displacement after yielding. However, all the specimens do not perform significant strength deterioration before failure. The effect of joint geometric parameters ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$ of the four specimens on hysteretic performance is also discussed.

  • A simply structural damage detection software is developed to identification damage in beams. According to linear fracture mechanics theory, the localized additional flexibility in damage vicinity can be represented by a lumped parameter element. The damaged beam is modeled by wavelet-based elements to gain the first three frequencies precisely. The first three frequencies influencing functions of damage location and depth are approximated by means of surface-fitting techniques to gain damage detection database of forward problem. Then the first three measured natural frequencies are employed as inputs to solve inverse problem and the intersection of the three frequencies contour lines predict the damage location and depth. The DLL (Dynamic Linkable Library) file of damage detection method is coded by C++ and the corresponding interface of software is coded by virtual instrument software LabVIEW. Finally, the software is tested on beams and shafts in engineering. It is shown that the presented software can be used in actual engineering structures.
