  • Titanium dioxide nanotube supported ZSM-5 zeolite composite catalyst was fabricated by decorating ZSM-5 zeolite on the hydrothermally synthesized titanium dioxide via hydrothermal process and subsequent annealing. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Nitrogen adsorption-desorption (BET). The surface acidity of the catalyst was measured by means of Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum of pyridine adsorption. And the catalytic activity for ethanol dehydration to ethylene was evaluated in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor. Attributed to the increase of the effective surface acid sites caused by titanium dioxide nanotube as electron acceptor, titanium dioxide nanotube supported ZSM-5 zeolite composite catalyst exhibits strongly enhanced activity for ethanol dehydration to ethylene.

  • To develop preferential CO oxidation reaction (PROX) catalyst for small scale hydrogen generation system, supported Pt catalysts have been applied for the target reaction. The supports were systematically changed to optimize supported Pt catalysts. $Pt/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed the highest CO conversion among the catalysts tested in this study. This is due to easier reducibility, the highest dispersion, and smallest particle diameter of $Pt/Al_2O_3$. It has been found that the catalytic performance of supported Pt catalysts for PROX depends strongly on the reduction property and depends partly on the Pt dispersion of supported Pt catalysts. Thus, $Pt/Al_2O_3$ can be a promising catalyst for PROX for small scale hydrogen generation system.

  • Silica supported tungstosilicic acid has been used as an effective catalyst for a modified Dakin-West one-pot, four-component condensation of an aryl aldehyde, an aryl ketone, acetyl chloride and acetonitrile for the synthesis of $\beta$-acetamido ketones. This catalytic system can act as an active, inexpensive, recoverable and recyclable catalyst. Some advantages of this system are short reaction times, good to excellent yields, easy work up and the ability to be carried out at the large scale reactions.

  • Supported lead oxide catalysts were prepared by using ${\alpha}-,{\beta}-{\gamma}$-alumina, and MgO as a support. Among the supported lead oxide catalysts, MgO-supported catalyst showed the highest $C_2^+$ hydrocarbon selectivity for the methane conversion into $C_2^+$ hydrocarbons, but ${\gamma}$-alumina-supported PbO catalyst gave the highest $CO_2$ selectivity. And ${\alpha}$-alumina-supported catlyst showed the midium activity, whereas ${\beta}$-alumina-supported catalyst gave little activity. These reaction characteristics seemed to be largely dependent on the acticity of lattice oxygens in supported catalysts, which would be influnto be largely dependent on the activity of lattice oxygens in supported catalysts, which would be influenced in the interaction between the supports and lead oxides and the properties of supports. Especially, much higher ration of (002)/(111) peak intensities for PbO phase on MgO support than on the other supports in X-ray diffraction analysis was considered to be ab evidence that methane oxidative coupling of methane might be so-called structure-sensitive reaction, and this seemed to be an example of surface oxide-support interaction (SOSI) in the oxidative coupling reaction.

  • The high-quality carbon nanofibers were prepared by chemical vapor deposition of gas mixtures of CO-H2 and C3H8-H2 over Fe-Cu and Ni-Cu bimetallic catalysts. The yield and structure of carbon nanofiber produced were altered by the change of catalyst composition and reaction temperature. The high yields were obtained around 500$^{\circ}C$ with e-Cu catalyst and around 700-750$^{\circ}C$ with Ni-Cu catalyst and the relatively higher yields were obtained with the bimetallic catalyst containing 50-90% of Ni and Fe respectively in comparison with the pure metals. The carbon nanofibers produced over the Fe-Cu catalyst at around 500$^{\circ}C$ with the maximum yields had the highest surface ares of 160-200 m2/g around 650$^{\circ}C$ which was slightly lower than the temperature for maximum yields. In order to examine the characteristics of carbon nanofibers as catalyst support Ni and Co metals were supporte on the carbon nanofibers and CO hydrogenation reaction was performed with the catalysts. The particle size distribution of Ni and Co supported over the carbon nanofibers were 6-15 nm and the CO hydrogenation reaction rate with the carbon-nanofiber supported catalysts was much higher than that over the other supports.

  • Carbon nanotube supported molybdenum carbide catalysts were prepared as a function of various preparation conditions and characterized, and their catalytic activities were compared through electrochemical oxidation of methanol. To overcome the low activity of a transition metal catalyst, carbon nanotube was used as a support, and the amount and the kind of precursors, acid treatment method, and carburization temperature were varied for the catalyst preparation. ICP-AES, XRD and TEM were used for the catalyst characterization. Based on the various preparation methods of carbon nanotube supported molybdenum carbide catalysts ($Mo_2C/CNT$), the size and the amount of supported catalysts could be controlled, and their effects on the electrochemical oxidation could be explained.

  • We have developed a one-step synthesis of benzofurans from o-iodophenol and various terminal alkynes, by using Pd catalyst supported on nano-sized carbon balls (NCB) under copper- and ligand free conditions. This recyclable catalyst could be reused more than 5 times in the same heteroannulation reaction. The results have demonstrated that diverse 2-substituted benzofurans with tolerant functional groups can be prepared simply and conveniently under these conditions.

  • A sustainable method was developed for the upgrade of biomass derived vanillin (a typical model compound of lignin) into the potential liquid biofuels over a layered double hydroxide supported Pd catalyst (abbreviated as CoAl-LDH/Pd). The CoAl-LDH/Pd catalyst showed high catalytic activity towards the hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin into 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) under mild conditions in aqueous media. High MMP yield up to 86% was produced at $120^{\circ}C$ after 4 h. Kinetic studies revealed that the rate-determining step for the hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin was the hydrogenolysis of vanillyl alcohol. More importantly, the CoAl-LDH/Pd catalyst was highly stable without the loss of activity.

  • A Pt catalyst ($Pt/G_xC_y$) supported on the hybrid supporting materials composed of graphene oxide (GO) and carbon black (C) was fabricated using polyol method to improve the durability of electrocatalysts. The electrochemical performances measured by cyclic voltammograms using three-electrode system revealed that the properly designed $Pt/G_xC_y$ catalyst exhibited higher durability than that of Pt/C catalyst without sacrificing an electrocatalytic acivity. In the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performed in acid solution with the rotating disk electrode, the $Pt/G_xC_y$ catalyst showed greater mass and area-specific activity than those of Pt/C catalyst.
