  • Data reduction has been used widely in data mining for convenient analysis. Principal component analysis (PCA) and factor analysis (FA) methods are popular techniques. The PCA and FA reduce the number of variables to avoid the curse of dimensionality. The curse of dimensionality is to increase the computing time exponentially in proportion to the number of variables. So, many methods have been published for dimension reduction. Also, data augmentation is another approach to analyze data efficiently. Support vector machine (SVM) algorithm is a representative technique for dimension augmentation. The SVM maps original data to a feature space with high dimension to get the optimal decision plane. Both data reduction and augmentation have been used to solve diverse problems in data analysis. In this paper, we compare the strengths and weaknesses of dimension reduction and augmentation for classification and propose a classification method using data reduction for classification. We will carry out experiments for comparative studies to verify the performance of this research.

  • Visible-near-infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy is a fast and non-destructive method for analyzing materials. However, most commercial VIS-NIR spectrometers are inappropriate for use in various locations such as in homes or offices because of their size and cost. In this paper, we classified eight food powders using a portable VIS-NIR spectrometer with a wavelength range of 450-1,000 nm. We developed three machine learning models using the spectral data for the eight food powders. The proposed three machine learning models (random forest, k-nearest neighbors, and support vector machine) achieved an accuracy of 87%, 98%, and 100%, respectively. Our experimental results showed that the support vector machine model is the most suitable for classifying non-linear spectral data. We demonstrated the potential of material analysis using a portable VIS-NIR spectrometer.

  • The context-awareness has become the one of core technologies and the indispensable function. for application services in ubiquitous computing environment. In this research, we incorporated the capability of context-awareness in a music recommendation system. Our proposed system consists of such components as Intention Module, Mood Module and Recommendation Module. Among these modules, the Intention Module infers whether a user wants to listen to the music or not from the environmental context information. We built the Intention Module using data mining techniques such as decision tree, support vector machine and case-based reasoning. The results showed that the case-based reasoning model outperformed the other models and its accuracy was 84.1%.

  • The estimation of the strength and other mechanical parameters characterizing the tensile behavior of granites can play an important role in civil engineering tasks such as design, construction, rehabilitation and repair of existing structures. The purpose of this paper is to apply data mining techniques, such as multiple regression (MR), artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machines (SVM) to estimate the mechanical properties of granites. In a first phase, the mechanical parameters defining the complete tensile behavior are estimated based on the tensile strength. In a second phase, the estimation of the mechanical properties is carried out from different combination of the physical properties (ultrasonic pulse velocity, porosity and density). It was observed that the estimation of the mechanical properties can be optimized by combining different physical properties. Besides, it was seen that artificial neural networks and support vector machines performed better than multiple regression model.

  • This paper present a decision method of middle ear disease which is developed in children and adults. In the proposed method, features are extracted from the middle ear disease images and normal images using HOG(histogram of oriented gradient) descriptor and the extracted features are learned by SVM(support vector machine) classifier. Input images are classified by SVM classifier based on the model of learning features. Experimental results show that the method yields accuracy of over 90% in decision.

  • One of the major paradigms for supervised learning in neural network community is back-propagation learning. The standard implementations of back-propagation learning are optimal under the assumptions of identical and independent Gaussian noise. In this paper, for regression function estimation, we introduce $\varepsilon-insensitive$ back-propagation learning algorithm, which corresponds to minimizing the least absolute error. We compare this algorithm with support vector machine(SVM), which is another $\varepsilon-insensitive$ supervised learning algorithm and has been very successful in pattern recognition and function estimation problems. For comparison, we consider a more realistic model would allow the noise variance itself to depend on the input variables.

시선 방향은 SVM(Support Vector Machine) 알고리즘을 사용하여 8방향중 하나로 추정된다. 이미지에서 얼굴영역과 머리영역은 색상 정보에 의해 검출된다. 사무실 환경에서 시선방향을 다양하게 변화시켜 실험을 하였고, 이를 통해 성능 평가를 수행하였다.

  • This paper presents a simulation model based on support vector regression (SVR) for flicker estimation emitted from the wind turbines. For the SVR training, the voltage variation and flicker level are selected as input and output, respectively. Through the off-line training, the relationship between the voltage variation and flicker level is derived. The required amount of data for the flicker measurement is decreased and its proessing time is also reduced. The simulation and experiment results have shown that the flicker estimation is performed accurately.

  • Corporate credit rating analysis has drawn a lot of research interests in previous studies, and recent studies have shown that machine learning techniques achieved better performance than traditional statistical ones. This paper applies support vector machines (SVMs) to the corporate credit rating problem in an attempt to suggest a new model with better explanatory power and stability. To serve this purpose, the researcher uses a grid-search technique using 5-fold cross-validation to find out the optimal parameter values of kernel function of SVM. In addition, to evaluate the prediction accuracy of SVM, the researcher compares its performance with those of multiple discriminant analysis (MDA), case-based reasoning (CBR), and three-layer fully connected back-propagation neural networks (BPNs). The experiment results show that SVM outperforms the other methods.
