  • In this paper, we introduce an escalator (ESC) algorithm based on the least squares (LS) criterion. The proposed algorithm is relatively insensitive to the eigenvalue spread ratio (ESR) of an input signal and has a faster convergence speed than the conventional ESC algorithms. This algorithm exploits the fast adaptation ability of least squares methods and the orthogonalization property of the ESC structure. From the simulation results, the proposed algorithm shows superior convergence performance.

  • A binary linear integer program is formulated for the problem of expanding the capacity of a fiber optic network and routing the traffic to deliver new interactive multimedia services. A two-phase Lagrangian dual search procedure and a Lagrangian heuristic are developed. Computational results show superior performance of the two-phase subgradient optimization compared with the conventional one-phase approach.

  • In this paper, as an alternative to constant modulus algorithm based on MSE, maximization of the probability that equalizer output power is equal to the constant modulus of the transmitted symbols is introduced. The proposed algorithm using the gradient ascent method to the maximum probability criterion has superior convergence and steady-state MSE performance, and the error samples of the proposed algorithm exhibit more concentrated density functions in blind equalization environments. Simulation results indicate that the proposed training has a potential advantage versus MSE training for the constant modulus approach to blind equalization.

  • Decentralized filtering for a formation flight instrumentation system by INS/GPS integration is considered in this paper. An elaborate tuning method of the measurement noise covariance is suggested to compensate modeling errors caused by decentralizing the extended Kalman filter. It does not require large data transfer between formation vehicles. Covariance analysis exhibits the superior performance of the proposed approach when compared with the existent decentralized filter and the global filter, which has the target-filter performance.

  • Thoracic outlet syndrome refers to compression of the subclavian vessels and brachial plexus at the superior aperture of the thorax. A 35-year old female was evaluated for right hand numbness. This patient had a history of headache, right shoulder pain, and right hand numbness during 10 months.Preoperative angiography, EMG, and NCV was performed. First rib and cervical rib resection was done with transaxillary approach. After operation, right hand numbness and right shoulder pain were disappeared. Postoperative course was uneventful.

  • This paper introduces a friction compensation fuzzy logic controller, which utilizes a rule-based approach. The paper explains the algorithm of the proposed controller and compares it with a conventional PID controller in simulations and experiments. For the experiments, the two control algorithms were implemented on a 3-axis milling machine in contour milling. These simulation and experimental analyses show that the proposed fuzzy logic controller has superior performance over conventional PID controllers In terms of part contour accuracy.

  • In this era of global market without national boundaries, the prominent enterprises in Korea which recognized that our parted away from has confornted with endless competition have parted away from the domestic market and have aimed for internalization by declaring "Global management" and trying superior product-design development. This phenomenon is a reflection of the recognition by enterprises of the importance in global product design to increase market share. Accordingly, the purpose of this research is to present a method with respect to the design by revaluation and to approach the product design development by analogizing and accommodation the common preferences of humankind(the "preference theory")In relation to the constieuent elements such as design and communication, the approach of global product-design is to systemize the unfolding process for the concepts and ideas as expressed under the preference theory. In order to achieve this, a design approach based on the documentary research of the preference theory was applied step by step to the design methods. Further, the approach in relation to user and design, the ideology of enterprises and communication as expressed under the preference theory were presented Lastly, in the course of our approach in extraction the transformative ideas of our traditional culture, design for containers of cosmetics were used as an example.re used as an example.

  • There are two methods for evaluating two or more mutually exclusive projects. One is a total investment approach and the other is an incremental investment approach. The former can rank projects by the criterion of the net present value, but the latter can't do it. An incremental investment approach is only possible when all pairwise alternatives are compared. Thus an incremental investment approach is superior in ranking them over an incremental investment approach. To do so, a principle of comparison must be established. Comparisons of profitability are reasonable when operating the same amount of investment over the same period of time. One principle is that all projects are invested in the largest of the projects. Another principle is that all projects are invested during the longest project life of the projects. In this paper, even if the principle is followed, it will be shown that the external rate of return fails to rank them. However, the productive rate of return criterion would prove to be able to rank them like the net present value standard, provided that the principle of comparison is kept. In addition, rate of returns can be assessed so that all mutually exclusive projects can be compared at once, such as on the criterion of the net present value. That is, it can be also compared with many other returns, such as the profit rates on financial investments or real investments.

  • In this paper, we present a new approach to autopilot design for skid-to-turn missiles which may have severe aerodynamic cross-couplings and nonlinearities with angle of attack. The model of missile motion is derived in the maneuver plane and, based on that model, pitch, yaw, and roll autopilot are designed. They are composed of a nonlinear term which compensates for the aerodynamic couplings and nonlinearities and a linear controller driven by the measured outputs of missile accelerations and angular rates. Besides the outputs, further information such as Mach number, dynamic pressure, total angle of attack, and bank angle is required. With the proposed autopilot and simple estimators of bank angle and total angle of attack, it is shown by computer simulations that the induced moments and some aerodynamic nonlinearities are properly compensated and that the performance is superior to that of the conventional ones.
