  • As the social demands for environmental pollution increase and regulations on the dyeing process wastewater are strengthened, supercritical dyeing process has been attracting attention as an alternative technology to reduce wastewater and energy consumption. In the supercritical dyeing process where carbon dioxide is used as a solvent instead of water as a solvent, there is no wastewater generated. The unfixed dyes can be reused later which makes the process environment-friendly. Also, after dyeing process, dried textiles can be obtained without additional drying process, which makes the process energy efficient. In this article, we have summarized the development of the supercritical dyeing process along with the research in Korea today and compared the principle of supercritical dyeing process with conventional dyeing process. To further explain the principle, studies of the distribution factor and mass transfer of dyes in supercritical carbon dioxide and fibers, as well as solubility between supercritical $CO_2$ and dyes are discussed. The dynamic behavior of dyes in supercritical dyeing apparatus and summary of the supercritical dyeing facilities developed around the world are also discussed. Finally, we suggest the direction of research and development for optimization of supercritical dyeing process and application to synthetic fibers and natural fibers except for polyester.

  • Micro- or nano-size particles are required to improve the combustion efficiency and stability in the case of solid explosives and propellants. The micro-structural properties of an energetic material strongly influence the combustion and explosion behavior. However, the traditional size reduction techniques, including milling, are not suitable for production of ultra-fine size particles. As an alternative to the traditional techniques, various re-crystallization processes based on supercritical fluids have recently been proposed. Supercritical fluids are fluids at temperatures and pressures above their critical point. In principle, they do not give problems of solvent contamination as they are completely released from the solute when the decompression occurs. Rapid Expansion Supercritical Solutions(RESS) and Supercritical Anti-Solvent Process(GAS/SAS) are representatives of a nano-size particle formation process of energetic materials using supercritical fluids. In this work, various fine particle formation processes using supercritical fluids are discussed and the results are presented.

  • In this study, the characteristics and sinterablities of TiO2 powders which were fabricated on sol-gel process and supercritical fluid process were examined. The powders fabricated on sol-gel process were amorphous. The particle size and shape were changed with the amount of water used for hydrolysis of titanium ethoxide. The powders were changed from amorphous to crystalline by heating at 400℃. The crystalline anatase TiO2 powders were directly prepared in ethanol supercritical fluid condition that temperature was 270±3℃ and pressure was 7.3 MPa. It's primary crystalline size was 20 nm and agglomerated as spherical shape whose size was 0.7∼1㎛. The powders prepared on sol-gel process were not sintered densely at 900℃ because of abnormal grain growth. However, the powders which prepared on supercritical fluid process were sintered densely at the comparatively low temperature of 800℃ by ideal growth of grain, which are fired at 900℃.

  • The characteristics of the breakup process in supercritical spray is investigated during the injection of supercritical sulfur hexafluoride into dissimilar gases at supercritical pressures and subcritical temperature of the injected fluid. The visualization techniques used are backlighting and shadowgraph methods. The spray angles are measured and the breakup and mixing process are observed at near and supercritical conditions. The results show that spray angles are decreased with the in..ease of the ratio of density $(\frac{\rho_f}{\rho_g})$. At the supercritical temperature, the spray angles in atomization region are kept nearly constant such as the typical spray angle in gas injection. The mixing process is changed radically at the temperature where $\frac{d\rho}{dT}=\frac{1}{2}[\frac{d\rho}{dT}]_{max}$ at given pressure.

  • Biodiesel is a renewable energy which is nontoxic and acting as a replacement for conventional diesel which derived from fossil fuel. Classified biodiesel producing way such as acid, base, supercritical and enzyme methods, this study focused on eco-friendly production of biodiesel using supercritical and immobilized enzyme process. Assuming a plant with a production rate of 10,000 tons a year, a PRO II simulator program was used to simulate the product conversion rate and total energy consumption. The product conversion in supercritical process and immobilized enzyme was found to be 91.17% (including 0.9% glycerol) and 93.18% (including 1.0% glycerol) respectively. The result shows that the efficiency of immobilized enzyme process is higher compared to supercritical process but having lower end product purity. From the energy consumption point of view, supercritical process consume about 8.9 MW while immobilized enzyme process consume much lower energy which is 3.9 MW. Consequently, this study certifies that energy consumption of supercritical process is 2.3 times higher than immobilized enzyme process.

  • In this study, C.I. Disperse Red 60 (DR60), C.I. Disperse Yellow 54 (DY54) dyes were used to investigate the washing fastness characteristics of PET fibers according to supercritical CO2 and aqueous dyeing process. The changes in K/S values and L⁎ values before and after washing of dyed PET fibers were observed according to the KS K ISO 105 washing fastness measurement method. In addition, it was confirmed by changing the ΔE⁎ and ΔL⁎ values of control PET fibers. Overall, it was confirmed that both the supercritical CO2 and aqueous dyeing process had excellent washing fastness ratings of 4-5 for DR60 and DY54 dyes. Comparatively, the K/S and L⁎ values for before and after washing of PET fibers with supercritical CO2 dyeing process was higher than that of the aqueous dyeing process and the ΔE⁎ and ΔL⁎ values of the control PET fibers were low. From the results, we observed that the supercritical CO2 dyeing process of PET fibers has better washing fastness characteristics than the aqueous dyeing process.

  • Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the turbulent convective heat transfer of the supercritical carbon dioxide flows in vertical and horizontal square ducts. The gas cooling process at the supercritical state experiences a sudden change in thermodynamic and transport properties. This results in the extraordinary variations of the heat transfer coefficients in the supercritical state, which are much different from those of single or two phase flows. Algebraic second moment closure which can include the effects of large thermophysical property variations of carbon dioxide and of buoyancy is employed to model the Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in the governing equations. The previous correlations for the turbulent heat transfer coefficient for the supercritical carbon dioxide flows couldn't reflect the buoyancy effect. The present results are used to establish a new heat transfer coefficient correlation including the effects of large thermophysical property variation and buoyancy on in-duct cooling process of supercritical carbon dioxide.

  • Recently, supercritical fluid process has been widely used in material synthesis and processing due to their remarkable properties such as high diffusivity, low viscosity, and low surface tension. Supercritical carbon dioxide is the most attractive solvent owing to their characteristics including non-toxic, non-flammable, chemically inert, and also it has moderate critical temperature and critical pressure. In addition, supercritical carbon dioxide would dissolve many small organic molecules and most polymers. In this study, we have prepared the poly (ethylene oxide)/clay nanocomposites using supercritical fluid as a carbon dioxide. Commercialized Cloisites-15A and Cloisites-30B used in this study, which are modified with quaternary ammonium salts. The nanocomposites of polymer/clay were characterized by XRD, TGA and DSC. Poly (ethylene oxide)/clay nanocomposites by supercritical fluid show higher thermal stability than nanocomposites prepared by melt process. In addition, supercritical fluid process would be increased dispersibility of the nanoclay in the matrix.
