  • The effects of process parameters for the formation of polypropylene film such as the polypropylene concentration in the solution, drying temperature for coating film, and variation of nano-silica content on the surface structure and property of polypropylene film have been studied. A super-hydrophobic polypropylene film with a maximum contact angle of $154^{\circ}$ was obtained at the condition of a polypropylene concentration of 30 mg/mL, a drying temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, a drying pressure of 93 mtorr for 90 min. The increase of a drying temperature reduced the contact angle by enhancing the surface smoothness of the film. The increase of nano-silica content in the composite film composed of polypropylene and silica changed the surface shape from microporous to microglobular, which led to increasing the contact angle and showed the super-hydrophobic surface property.

  • We propose a two-step lithography process to minimize edge-bead issues caused by thick photoresist (PR) coating. In the conventional PR process, the edge bead can be efficiently removed by applying an edge-bead removal (EBR) process while rotating the silicon wafer at a high speed. However, applying conventional EBR to the production of desired PR mold with unique negative patterns cannot be used because a lower rpm of spin coating and a lower temperature in the soft bake process are required. To overcome this problem, a two-step lithography process was developed in this study and applied to the fabrication of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film having super-hydrophobic characteristics. Following UV exposure with a first photomask, the exposed part of the silicon wafer was selectively removed by applying a PR developer while rotating at a low rpm. Then, unique PR mold structures were prepared by employing an additional under-exposure process with a second mask, and the mold patterns were transferred to the PDMS. Results showed that the fabricated PDMS film based on the two-step lithography process reduced the height difference from 23% to 5%. In addition, the water contact angle was greatly improved by spraying of hydrophobic nanosilica on the dual-scaled PDMS surface.

  • An excellent hydrophobic surface has a high contact angle over 147 degree and the contact angle hysteresis below $5^0$ was produced by using roughness combined with hydrophobic PTFE coatings, which were also confirmed to exhibit an extreme adhesion to glass substrate. To form the rough surface, the glass was etched by Ar-plasma. A very thin PTFE film was coated on the plasma etched glass surface. Roughness factors before or after PTFE coating on the plasma etched glass surface, based on Wensel's model were calculated, which agrees well with the dependence of the contact angle on the roughness factor is predicted by Wensel's model. The PTFE films deposited on glass by using a conventional rf-magnetron sputtering. The glass substrates were etched Ar-plasma prior to the deposition of PTFE. Their hydrophobicities are investigated for application as a anti-fouling coating layer on the screen of displays. It is found that the hydrophobicity of PTFE films mainly depends on the sputtering conditions, such as rf-power, Ar gas content introduced during deposition. These conditions are closely related to the deposition rate or thickness of PTFE film. Thus, it is also found that the deposition rate or the film thickness affects sensitively the geometrical morphology formed on surface of the rf-sputtered PTFE films. In particular, 1,950-nm-thick PTFE films deposited for 30 minute by rf-power 50 watt under Ar gas content of 20 sccm shows a very excellent optical transmittance and a good anti-fouling property and a good durability.

  • In line with the Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) regulation, the main idea in this study has been focused on the utilization of hydrocarbon adsorber (HCA) to adsorb the excess hydrocarbons emitted during a period of engine cold-start, As main recipes of HCA materials, many types of zeolite as well as the combination of alumina and precious metals were used, Representative physico-chemical factors of zeolite such as acidic and hydrophobic properties were characterized. The optimum recipe of HCA materials was also determined. Among the acid properties of zeolites, the Si/Al ratio was found to be the most important factor to get higher hydrocarbon adsorption capacity.

  • A new monoazo violet dye optimized for polyolefin fibers such as polypropylene and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibers was synthesized and its dyeability was investigated. Two hexyl groups were introduced to coupler, 2,5-dimethoxyaniline, in order to increase hydrophobicity of the dye. The maximum absorption wavelength was appeared at 580nm, which meant that the dye showed violet color. From the dyeing results at various conditions, the optimum dyeing was determined as $130^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour with 5% owf of dyes. The good fastness ratings to washing, rubbing were obtained showing at least 4 for both fibers. Light fastness was acceptable for polypropylene fibers giving ratings 3~4. However, relatively poor light fastness was obtained in case of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibers showing ratings 2.

Nano-patterned mold is a key to replicate nano-patterned products by mass production process such as injection molding and UV molding. The present paper proposes the new fabricating method of nano-patterned mold at low cost. The nano-patterned mold was fabricated by electroforming the anodic aluminum oxide membrane filled with UV curable resin in nano-hole by capillary phenomenon. As a result, the final mold with nano-patterns which have the holes with the diameter of 100~200 nm was fabricated. • For decades, carbon fiber has expanded their application fields from reinforced composites to energy storage and transfer technologies such as electrodes for super-capacitors and lithium ion batteries and gas diffusion layers for proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Especially in fuel cell, water repellency of gas diffusion layer has become very important property for preventing flooding which is induced by condensed water could damage the fuel cell performance. In this work, we fabricated superhydrophobic network of carbon fiber with high aspect ratio hair-like nanostructure by preferential oxygen plasma etching. Superhydrophobic carbon fiber surfaces were achieved by hydrophobic material coating with a siloxane-based hydrocarbon film, which increased the water contact angle from $147^{\circ}$ to $163^{\circ}$ and decreased the contact angle hysteresis from $71^{\circ}$ to below $5^{\circ}$, sufficient to cause droplet roll-off from the surface in millimeter scale water droplet deposition test. Also, we have explored that the condensation behavior (nucleation and growth) of water droplet on the superhydrophobic carbon fiber were significantly retarded due to the high-aspect-ratio nanostructures under super-saturated vapor conditions. It is implied that superhydrophobic carbon fiber can provide a passage for vapor or gas flow in wet environments such as a gas diffusion layer requiring the effective water removal in the operation of proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Moreover, such nanostructuring of carbon-based materials can be extended to carbon fiber, carbon black or carbon films for applications as a cathode in lithium batteries or carbon fiber composites.

  • In order to detect gas phase strong acid on fabrics, a hexyl-substituted monoazo yellow dye, which was the modified form of a conventional pH-indicating dye, Methyl Yellow, was studied in view of acid-gas sensing properties and its fastness. The dye was printed on polypropylene non-wovens for protective coveralls and examined under various conditions of strong acid such as hydrochloric acid. The dye showed color change from yellow to red on exposure to gas phase hydrochloric acid as low concentration as 1~3 ppm very instantly. Considering reuse of the dye-printed non-wovens, the repeatability of color change was tested on the same sample for 50 repeats and 100 days. The acid-gas sensing function was maintained almost the same level of initial performance. The color fastness of the dye on polypropylene non-wovens was very good showing higher than ratings 4 except for 3~4 to rubbing under wet condition.
