  • The corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steel on both its fibrous and dispersed phase was investigated. These structures consist of various volume fraction and distribution of austenite structure, which were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and cycle. The fibrous phase had higher austenite volume fraction than that of the dispersed phase at the same temperature. Corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steel was evaluated through an immersion test and an impingement test, using 35% HCI and sea water, respectively. Super duplex stainless steel was compared with STS316L and STS304. The corrosion resistance of super duplex stainless steel was superior to ST316L and STS304. The dispersed phase of super duplex stainless steel was more stabilized than the fibrous phase in corrosion. The magnitude of corrosion rate was in order STS304, STS316L, fibrous phase of super duplex stainless steel and dispersed phase of super duplex stainless steel.

  • Super duplex stainless steel has along life in severe environments because of its strength and corrosion resistance. If 0.2$\sim$0.3% Nitrogen in aninterstitial solid solution is added, the austenite structure is reinforced. This improves the solid solution hardening and the anticorrosionability. In this study, the mechanical properties and structures of the super duplex stainless steel with the 0.2% N additive were investigated to determine the effect of various volume fractions on the austenite phase. The various volume fractions and distributions of the austenite structure in the applied test specimens were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and cycle. The characteristics by amounts of the $\sigma$ phase obtained from the precipitation heat treatment were alsoinvestigated. From the results, when the austenite volume fraction increases, the tensile strength decreases and elongation increases. And the $\sigma$ phase was rapidly increased by increasing the heat treatment time. When the volume fraction of the $\sigma$ phase increased, tensile strength increased.

  • The phase changes, nitride precipitation and hardness variations of 14%Cr-6.7Ni-0.65Mo-0.26Nb-0.05V-0.03C super martensitic stainless steel were investigated after nitrogen permeation heat treatment at a temperature range between $1050^{\circ}C$ and $1150^{\circ}C$. The nitrogen-permeated surface layer was transformed into austenite. The rectangular type NbN, NbCrN precipitates and fine round type precipitate were coexisted in the surface austenite layer, while the interior region that was free from nitrogen permeation kept the martensitic phase. The hardness of surface austenite showed 280 Hv, while the interior region of martensite phase represented 340 Hv. When tempering the nitrogen-permeated steel at $450^{\circ}C$, a maximum hardness of 433 Hv was appeared, probably this is attributed to the secondary hardening effect of the precipitates. The nitrogen concentration decreased gradually with increasing depth below the surface after showing a maximum of 0.3% at the outmost surface. The strong affinity between nitrogen and Cr enabled the substitutional element Cr to move from interiors to the surface when nitrogen diffuse form surface to the interior. Corrosion resistance of nitrogen permeated steel was superior to that of solution-anneaed steel in the solution of 1N $H_2SO_4$.

These structures consist of various volume fractions and distributions of the austenite phase that were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and cycle. The fibrous structure had higher austenite volume fraction than dispersed structure on the same temperature. As the austenite volume fraction increased in both structures, tensile strength and elongation increased, but hardness decreased. Fatigue life of fibrous structure parallel to rolling direction was shorter than that of perpendicular to rolling direction. Fatigue life of dispersed structure was longer than parallel fibrous structure, and shorter than perpendicular fibrous structure. Fatigue crack propagation rate of fibrous structure was faster than that of dispersed structure.

  • On this study, the fatigue crack propagation of super duplex stainless steel is investigated in conditions of various volume fraction of austenite phase by changing heat treatment temperature. And we analysed acoustic emission signals during the fatigue test by time-frequency analysis methods. As the temperature of heat treatment increased, volume fraction of austenite decreased and coarse grain was obtained. The specimen heat treated at $1200^{\circ}C$ had longer fatigue life and slower rate of crack growth. As a result of time-frequency analyze of acoustic emission signals during fatigue test, main frequency was $200{\sim}300kHz$ having no correlation with heat treatment and crack length, and 500kHz was obtained by dimple and separate of inclusion

  • In this study, we investigated the precipitation behavior of the R-phase precipitated at the initial stage of aging and its effect on the pitting corrosion of 25%Cr-7%Ni-4%Mo super duplex stainless steel. The R-phase in super duplex stainless steel was mainly precipitated at the interface of ferrite/austenite phases and inside of the ferrite phase during the initial stage of aging, and it was transformed into the ${\sigma}$-phase with an increase in aging time. The ferrite phase was decomposed into a new austenite phase and ${\sigma}$-phase. The R phase was an intermetallic compound, which represented a lower Ni and higher Mo than the matrix, and also had a higher Mo and Cr concentration than the ${\sigma}$ phase. With an increasing aging time, the pitting potential $E_p$ was increased slowly by the precipitation of the R-phase, and it was then steeply decreased by the precipitation of the ${\sigma}$-phase. The R-phase was decreased the pitting potential, but its effect was smaller than effect of ${\sigma}$-phase.

  • Super duplex stainless steel has long life in severe environments by showing the enough strength and corrosion resistance. Therefore, the fracture mechanics approach needs to support the structural strength integrity for the used material. In this study, fatigue crack propagation behavior was investigated to super duplex stainless steel with 0.2% nitrogen. The various volume fraction and distribution of austenite structure for applied specimen in test were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and cycle. From test results, fatigue crack propagation rate showed two kinds of tendency between da/dN and ${\Delta}K$ according to distribution of austenite structure and structure anisotropy.

  • The effects of reheating during welding on the microstructure and impact toughness of weld metal in 25% Cr super duplex stainless steels were investigated. Using different heat inputs, weld metals with different reheated regions were obtained. This showed that, depending on the reheating temperature, the microstructure in the reheated region was quite different from that of the as-deposited microstructure. When reheated into the ${\gamma}+{\alpha}$ temperature range, fine intragranular austenite was formed in the as-deposited columnar structure. However, when reheated above the ${\alpha}$ solvus temperature range, most of the columnar structure disappeared and fine equiaxed austenite and ferrite were formed. Because of the larger amount of fine austenite in the reheated region, a higher impact toughness was obtained in the weld metal with a higher amount of reheated region.

  • This work presents the effect of the cooling rate on the precipitation of super duplex stainless steel. Specimens of super duplex stainless steel with a specific composition were cooled at various cooling rates after being melted at $1550^{\circ}C$ in a directional solidification furnace. Ferrite (${\delta}$), Austenite (${\gamma}$), Sigma (${\sigma}$), and Chi (${\chi}$) phases were precipitated when the cooling rate was lower than 0.22 K/s. When the cooling rate was 0.22 K/s or faster, ${\sigma}$ and ${\chi}$ phases were not precipitated.
