  • A microbial strain capable of degrading ABS (alkyl benzene sulfonate) was isolated and identified as Pseudomonas caryophylli. During the incubation of the isolated bacterium in a synthetic effluent containing 10 ppm of ABS, the extents of removal of ABS, BOD and COD were 40%, 89% and 71%, respectively. The degradability of ABS by pure culture with the isolated strain was twice higher than that of mixed culture with natural microflora. The biodegradability of some commercial detergents in Korea by the isolated organism was as follows: Hiti 46.2%, Kleenup 37.5%, No.1 29%, and OK 27.9%.

  • 1-naphthol-2-sulfonic acid and 1-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid were synthesized under the dissolution of 1-naphthol in 2-nitrotoluene with stirring 98.08-90% sulfuric acid at $5-95^{\circ}C$ for 1-5 hours. As the reaction temperatures and the reaction time were raised, the yield of 2-sulfonate was decreased, while that of 4-sulfonate was increased. But we could not observe the tendency to the various reaction concentrations of sulfuric acids. The mixtures of two isomeric 1-naphtholulfonic acids in excess concentrated sulfuric acids was quantitatively determinded by using multicomponent spectrophotomeric analysis method on the basis of the ultraviolet absorption peak of the sulfonic acids. The standard deviation in this method was ${\pm}\;2.6$, and the above method seem to be rapid and accurate.

  • Linear alkyl sulfonates (LAS) constitute a large fraction of the surfactants used in cleaning processes in households, trade and industry Despite the industrial significance and the possible environmental impact of these compounds, the fast and inexpensive determination of LAS concentrations is still a difficult task. In this study, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy which is a rapid spectroscopic analysis method compared with a traditional analytical method for the measurement of LAS concentration such as HPLC, GC and standard wet chemistry method. NIR spectra of LAS between 0.313 and 25.0% (w/v) in water were utilized to develop a calibration model. The best results (R = 0.998, SEP = 0.244% (w/v)) obtained by using partial least-squares regression with spectral data treatment and 2nd derivatization were comparable to the results (SEC = 0.186% (w/v), SEP = 0.206% (w/v)) obtained by using multiple linear least-squares regression (MLR). However, models based on derivative spectra have no significant advantage with MLR.

  • Aquesous carbon nanotubes (CNTs) solutions were prepared using SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfonate) and NADDBS (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate). Our inks are found to have the viscosity of 1-2 cps. In addition, the surface tension of inks inversely decreased with increasing surfactant concentration and then saturated at critical micelle concentration (CMC). The low surface tension at CMC gave rise to lower contact angles on Indium layers, resulting in larger printable feature sizes. In the fabrication of cold cathode, jet-printing is feasible to modify and scale up the cathode structures. These feasibilities could contribute jet-printing method to be more adaptable for making large-area cold cathodes.

  • The course of biodegradation of anionic surfactants, Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates(LAS), Sodium Lauryl Ethoxylate Sulfonate(SLES), and Sodium Lauryl Sulfonates(SLS), which are mainly used to make detergents and shampoo, was investigated. The degree of biodegradation was studied as a function of concentration, volumetric flow rate, and temperature in Naktong River. MethyleneBlue Active Substances(MBAS), Total Dissolved Organic Carbon(TOC), and Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD) were measured to evaluate the degree of biodegradation. The degree of biodegradation of LAS was highly dependent upon the concentration and was increased as the concentration was decreased and that of SLES and SLS was almost constant at the concentration of less than 200 ppm, but was much increased as the volumetric flow rate was increased or the temperature was increased.

  • An anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), was introduced during the ultrasonication process for exfoliation of graphene. The surfactant plays the roles of exfoliator and stabilizer by binding to the graphene surface. The obtained modified graphene was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and solid state $^{13}C$ CP/MAS NMR to analyze the binding between molecules, and by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to characterize the bulk structure. The resulting graphene exhibited good dispersion stability in both water and organic solvents.

  • The present research work is on the effect of sawdust ash (SDA) on the mechanical strengths of self compacting concrete (SCC) using naphthalene sulfonate (NS) as a plasticizer. Experiments on compressive, flexural and splitting tensile strengths are conducted and the data analyzed using the Minitab 15 software. The results showed that SDA can defer the reaction of cement hydration and prolong the setting times of cement paste. This was very much pronounced on the flexural and splitting tensile strengths at 90 days of curing which are 36 % and 33 % higher than the control strengths, respectively. The study has proposed strength relations of mortar compressive strength with the flexural and splitting tensile strengths and these are, 5 and 7 times respectively. The flexural strength is 1.5 times that of the splitting tensile. Finally, linear models were developed on these relationships.

  • Amounts of alkylbenzene sulfonate (ABS) in the mixtures of anionic and nonionic detergents were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method. In the NMR spectrum of anionic and nonionic detergents, benzene group showed peaks overlapping at 6.5∼8ppm, but after sampling, benzene group showed two doublet at 7∼8ppm. Calibration curve was obtained by relative ratio of area for benzene group in anionic detergent to that for methyl group in acetic acid(acetic acid was used as the internal standard).

  • Bulk polymerization of propylene sulfide with o-sulfobenzoic anhydride as initiator was carried out and the polymerization proceeded by a zwitterionic mechanism. Chemical and spectroscopic investigation of the purified polymer revealed that the polymer contained two end groups-thiolester of benzoic acid o-sulfonate anions and acyclic tert-sulfonium ions which were formed by termination of episulfonium ions with sulfide groups in the polymer chains. The concentration of sulfonate anions was nearly the same as the concentration of acyclic tert-sulfonium ions, as expected for macrozwitterions. The cocatalysis mechanism by a trace of water was excluded and the other possible mechanisms were discussed on the basis of end group analysis.

  • A high-throughput screening strategy was developed to simplify the selection process for improved mannitol producing strain after chemical mutagenesis. Ethylmethyl sulfonate (EMS) was used as a chemical mutagen to alter the fructokinase-I gene which is an essential enzyme to metabolize fructose for growth. Leuconostoc mesenteroides treated with EMS were plated on the modified MRS solid medium containing fructose as a sole carbon source. Strains showing inhibited growth were primarily selected to evaluate the mannitol producing ability. By applying this strategy, L. mesenteroides ATCC 8293 M1, L. mesenteroides ATCC 9135 M3 and L. mesenteroides D1 M3 showed improvement in mannitol production.
