  • This is an investigation on the secondary vegetation and succession in the mixed forests destroyed by the severe crown fires on April 8, 1982. The results are summarized as follows: The floristic compositions in the investigated area are composed of 63 kinds of kinds of vascular plants. The biological type shows $ H-D_1, 4-R_5-e$, which is supposed to make a progress to the $ H-D_1-R_5-e$ type. Dominant species are Spodiopogon sibiricus (100.00)-Carex humilis var. nana (70.52)-Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens (61, 06)-Lespedeza maximowiczii (57.53). Lespedexa maximowiczii is prevailing as the dominant species in this area. The species diversity(H) and eveness index(e) show 3.00 and 0.74 respectively, so that the species are various and shows uniform distribution comparatively in these communities. Degree of succession(DS) is 479 in the investigated area, the value of which is comparatively higher than that of Chungcheongbuk-do area at the second year afer fires. After the crown and trunk of trees were scorched by the crown fires, the pine tree (Pinus densiflora) died and the other species could be survivd after sometimes. It some that Quercus serrata. Q. dentata, Maackia amurensis, Lespedez cyrtobotrya, Platycarya strobilacea and Lindera glauca are the fire-resistant plants.

  • We obtained quantitative information on leaf unfolding and leaf shedding by observing 45 species of cool temperate deciduous trees in an arboretum over 5 growing seasons. These trees were in leaf (the foliage period) for 207 days on average after 1 April; 50% of leaves had been shed by 192 days after 1 April. Duration from the start of leaf unfolding to 50% leaf shedding was 157 days on average. Leaf unfolding began 35 days on average after 1 April. For leaf unfolding to begin, a$ 51^{\circ}C{\cdot}day$ of cumulated daily mean air temperature above $5^{\circ}C$ from 1 January (modified Kira's warmth index) was needed. Fifty-nine days elapsed between initiation and the final stage of leaf unfolding. The period of net photosynthetic assimilation was 157 days. The species with succeeding- type leaf unfolding associated with the anemochore seed type dominated the early stage of succession, while the species with flush-type leaf unfolding tended to dominate the late stage of succession. Few species were found in regions where late frosts occur after the day when the cumulative temperature for leaf unfolding is achieved. Biological characteristics include time of leaf unfolding, which affects the life history of each species, so that each species occupies its own niche in the stand. We conclude that that leaf phenology, such as timing of leaf unfolding and leaf shedding, is one of the components of each species' ecological characteristics.

  • This report is an investigation of the revegetation and secondary succession in the burned area of Mt. Sanseung in Taegu region. The forest fire took place in December, 1977. The survey was conducted eight times, -three times from October 1, 1983 to October 3, the same year and five times from August 10, 1984 to August 15, the same year. The floristic compositions in the sampled sites constituted 25 kinds of vascular plants and 21 kinds in the burned area and the unburned area respectively. The biological type in both the burned and unburned areas was H-D1-R5-e type, which is generally common to other areas (Taegu, Kyungpook, Chung Buk and Kangweon areas). In the burned area dominant species were Carex humilisvar. nana, Arundinella hirata and Quercus serrata and on the other hand, in the unburned area Pinus densiflora, Carex humilis var. nana, Rhododendron mucrfonulatum var. ciliatum and Quercus serrata. The species diversity diversity index(H) and eveness index(e) of the burned area were higher than those unburned area. Degree of succession (DS) was 650 in the burned area at the 6th years after the fires and 962 in the unburned area. THe vegetation of the burned area was slowly recovered as of 1984 compared with each other. According to the analysis of the soil preperties, pH, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium were increased, but organic matter, total nitrogen and total organic carbon were decreased. It is assumed that these results were due to the forest fire.

  • This study aims at classifying and interpreting on the vegetation structure and analyzing the correlationship between communities and environmental conditions in Mt. Wolchulsan. We also predicted the succession possibility and the vertical distribution change of vegetations according to the global warming, through the pioneer species of a forest change and dominant species of canopy vegetations. We also analyzed the Raunkiaer's life-form. The communities in this ecotone are distributed vertically in the order of a Quercus acuta community, a Q. serrata-Q. variabilis community and a Q. serrata community. A Pinus densiflora community appears on the most of altitudes. The distribution of communities correlates highly with an altitude. The Q. serrata-Q. variabilis community will be succession to the Q. acuta community, and the Q. variabilis will be under natural selection gradually or remain locally. The Q. serrata community will possibly maintain as it is, and the P. densiflora community will be also under natural selection gradually. The valuable quantitative and numerical life-forms are confirmed and the layer structure of present vegetation will not be changed.

  • A study on the seasonal changes in the phytoplankton community was carried out in four aquaculture ponds of Bangladesh over a period of 16 months from August 2000 to November 2001. Out of 45 phytoplankton species identified, 30 belong to Cyanophyceae, 7 to Chlorophyceae, 5 to Bacillariophyceae and 3 to Euglenophyceae. The highest phytoplankton abundance was observed in spring followed by early autumn, summer, and the lowest was in winter. The annual succession of Cyanophyceae was characterized by spring and early autumn period dominated by Microcystis sp. Anabaena sp. and Planktolymbya sp. with Microcystis sp. as the main blue-green algae represented. Chlorophyceae was characterized by rainy season domination of Chlorella vulgaris, Pediastrum sp. and Scenedesmus denticulatus with maximum abundance of Chlorella vulgaris. Whereas Bacillariophyceae was dominant during the winter period. Navicula angusta and Cyclotella meneghiniana were the most frequently occurring species of Bacillariophyceae throughout the study period. Euglenophyceae was dominant in late autumn and Euglena sp. was the dominant species. The effect of various physicochemical water quality parameters on the seasonal distribution and succession of the above mentioned phytoplankton population as well as the interaction and eutrophication are discussed.

As a part of studies on taxonomy and phylogeny of bats inhabiting Korea, a taxonomic review of one rhinolophid and six vespertilionid bats collected at 18 localities during the period from October 1985 to July 1987 was carried out, basing on the external, cranial, dental and humeral morphology. These bats include a rare species, Eptesicus serotinus brachydigitus, the detailed characters of which were described in addition to the original description by Mori (1928b). Further, the Korean microchiropteran faunal succession was described laking into consideration the recent chiropteran fauna, and climatic and geographical changes in the Pleistocene: the recent bat fauna of Korea has become abundant in the north-originating species rather than in the south-originating ones, which is a reverse tendency in the Palearctic continent.

  • 'Local food' is defined as food that has been cooked using local specialities or food prepared with the application of special cooking method associated with a particular locale. In Korea, much of what is considered 'traditional food' is derived from local foods. Therefore, much attention has recently been focused on the role of local foods in terms of the development of Korean traditional foods. The primary objective of this study was to characterize the perception concerns regrading Jeollabuk-do local foods held by university students in Jeollabuk-do, a province which is famous for its delicious local foods. The majority of students felt sympathy toward the succession and development of Jeollabuk-do local foods and generally appeared to feel that Jeollabuk-do local food was representative of a vital cultural heritage. Summing up answers to questions regarding the reasons for the succession and development of local food in Jeollabuk-do, it seems clear that in order to augment the popularity of Jeollabuk-do local foods, a variety of schemes should be implemented rather than any specific strategy.

  • The waste landfill that has been used as a park through a stabilization project to provide green space to local residents. Vegetation restoration is necessary for the landfill park project, but it is difficult to restore vegetation due to various disturbances in the landfill. This study analyzed the successional dynamics and ecological characteristics of Robinia pseudoacacia communities from the slopes of Noeul Park by applying the 7-stage successional hypothesis. As a result of the study, there was almost no intermediate successional stage. There are only the early successional stage which Robinia pseudoacacia has an absolute dominance of 100% in the crown and middle layers, and the degeneration successional stage which formed by the introduction of Morus alba. This result showed that the succession of Robinia pseudoacacia communities were not able to proceed to the climax forest due to various disturbances in the waste landfill. Therefore, it was analyzed that it is necessary to induce the succession through intermediate steps such as Morus alba, since it is difficult to transition from Robinia pseudoacacia community to the native Quercus spp. community.
