카니발리즘으로 읽는 『보헤미아의 빛』 (Reading Luces de Bohemia with Carnivalism)

  • 에스페르펜토는 바예 인클란의 문학에서 가장 독창적인 미학체계로 현실을 오목거울에 반영된 모습으로 그리는 기법이다. 그런데 바예 인클란의 독창적인 미학 체계인 에스페르펜토의 서술전략은 많은 지점에서 마하일 바흐친의 카니발리즘과 맞닿아 있다. 『보헤미아의 빛』에서 사용된 에스페르펜토의 여러 기법들이 바흐친의 카니발리즘적인 기법으로 설명될 수 있기 때문이다. 이에 본 논문은 바예 인클란의 『보헤미아의 빛』에 나오는 에스페르펜토적인 기법을 바흐친의 카니발리즘의 차원에서 되짚어보는 것을 목표로 한다. 바예 인클란의 첫 번째 에스페르펜토 극작품인 『보헤미아의 빛』은 다성성, 진지함의 전복성, 패러디, 그로테스크적 리얼리즘, 광장, 양가성, 변칙적인 시공간의 구조 등의 층위에서 지배계층의 권력이나 권위의 탈중심적인 전복을 추구하고 있다는 점에서 미하일 바흐친의 카니발적인 요소를 많이 함유하고 있다. 에스페란토와 카니발주의는 당시 스페인 사회에 대한 비판과 풍자를 넘어 사회 현실을 해석하는 도구이다. 등장인물들은 고전 영웅들처럼 자신의 운명을 적극적으로 개척하기 보다는 인간의 운명을 결정하는 모든 외부적인 요인에 수동적으로 행동한다. 현대인은 현대 문명의 외적인 환경에 대항하거나 그것을 통제하지 못한다. 그래서 비극적이다. 이런 상황에서 현실에 도전하는 비극의 영웅은 사라지고, 이 작품의 주인공인 막스 에스트레야와 같은 꼭두각시가 그 자리를 대체한다. 이것이 바예 인클란이 『보헤미아의 빛』에서 시도한 카니발적 유머의 진정한 의미이자 풍자이다.

Regulation of Tumor Immune Surveillance and Tumor Immune Subversion by TGF-$\beta$

  • Transforming growth factor-$\beta$ (TGF-$\beta$) is a highly pleiotropic cytokine playing pivotal roles in immune regulation. TGF-$\beta$ facilitates tumor cell survival and metastasis by targeting multiple cellular components. Focusing on its immunosuppressive functions, TGF-$\beta$ antagonists have been employed for cancer treatment to enhance tumor immunity. TGF-$\beta$ antagonists exert anti-tumor effects through #1 activating effector cells such as NK cells and cytotoxic $CD8^+$ Tcells (CTLs), #2 inhibiting regulatory/suppressor cell populations, #3 making tumor cells visible to immune cells, #4 inhibiting the production of tumor growth factors. This review focuses on the effect of TGF-$\beta$ on T cells, which are differentiated into effector T cells or newly identified tumor-supporting T cells.

현대 패션에 나타난 패딩의 표현특성 (The Expressive Characteristics of the Padding in Contemporary Fashion)

  • This study analyzed the expressive characteristics of padding in contemporary fashion. The methodology of this study was quantified through documentaries, fashion collections, and internet news. The results of expressive characteristics and methods were as follow. First, variability showed the creation of dwelling space by air filling, detail mode by zipper, and diversity of recycled filling by zipper pocket. It reflected the pursuit of nomadism and subversion of permanence by change of filling. Second, it was sexual symbolicity that showed the blurred androgynous silhouette by air filling and padding bar design of the chest, stomach, shoulder for the male body silhouette. It emphasized male sexual identity and power through the expression of a modern ideal body. Third, decoration displayed various crafts (such as knitting), various fabric such as polapolis, suedette, corduroy, denim, leather, knit, and spangle. It reflected visual pleasure, scarcity and various interpretations. Fourth, playfulness character forms throug hair filling, unfamiliar fashion items, diversity of silhouette and change of uses. It reflected a pleasant feeling through astonishment and surprise, nostalgia involved in memory and childhood play and disembarrassment from reality. Fifth, simplicity showed the elimination of a sportswear's factor with regular wad quilting, elimination of wad quilting, wad quilting following the structural line of clothes and the structual line of clothes omitted. It reflected disembarrassment from stereotype and an emphasis on essential elements.

  • <완득이>는 우리사회의 소외계층이 겪어내야 하는 다양한 문제들의 제시와 가난한 완득이가족 및 외국인노동자를 돕는 이동주의 행위가 중심이 된다. 소외계층에 대한 지원, 성적중심의 학교교육에 대한 비판, 기존 사회시스템의 변화 촉구 등의 메시지를 통해 이 영화가 전복의 입장을 취하고 있는 영화라는 것을 알 수 있다. 그러나 본 논문은 '객관적 관찰자로서의 이동주의 제시와 그에 대한 관객의 동의가 사회의 변화에 어떤 기여를 할 수 있는가'하는 의문을 시작으로, 작품을 둘러싼 다양한 주체들의 관계가 만들어내는 상징폭력의 재생산의 양상에 관하여 분석을 시도한다. <완득이>는 메시지의 효과적인 전달과 대중성 확보를 위한 가장 큰 전략으로 '웃음의 효과'와 '낭만적인 시선'을 이용하고 있다. 이러한 요소는 이 영화가 관객의 변화를 통한 사회변화의 필요성을 촉구하는 메시지를 가지고 있더라도 피해자 스스로 폭력을 정당한 것으로 인정하게 하면서 공모에 의한 사회질서 유지와 재생산을 가능하게 하는 원인으로 작용한다.

성(性)적 마스커레이드를 통해 고찰한 패션사진의 유형 (Types of fashion photography investigated through sexual masquerade)

  • This study, which focuses on a masquerade, starts from the concept that all men exist as visual objects as well as visual subjects before discussing an issue of sexuality to inquire into masquerade characteristics of fashion photography. Masquerade is a concept that can describe various and multidimensional attributes of humans in social norms prescribed separately for men and women till now, and the concept has not yet been introduced in the field of fashion. However, it is considered a measure to analyze contemporary expressions of sexuality, on which a need for this research is raised. This study looks into the basic concept of the object and the ego through a psychoanalysis-related literature review. This study, then inquires into Jacques Lacan's notion of gaze and Roger Caillois's theory of mimicry through related specialty publications. This study reinterprets the concept of masquerade from Lacan's perspective and carries out an empirical analysis of masquerade characteristics in contemporary fashion photography based on the result drawn in parallel. Sexual masquerade shown in fashion photography based on the concept of masquerade is as follows: first, it appears as normative sexual description, divided into male and female by social norms; second, sexual ambiguity, obscuring the distinction between the sexes through playful and bombastic forms; and lastly, sexual subversion, disguising as the opposite sex through putting on clothes of the opposite sex.

포스트모던 제국의 우울증-데이빗 헨리 황의 『엠. 버터플라이』 (David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly: Postmodern Other, (Post-)Imperialist Melancholy and Western Masculinity in Crisis)

  • This article discusses David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly as a suggestive text for examining Western masculinity in crisis in the post-imperialist age, in which territorial imperialism is no longer valid. Previous scholarship on M. Butterfly has centered around the interlocking dynamics of imperialism, racism and sexism. Such critical attentions focus on how Hwang deconstructs racialized significations of the East and the West. In these discussions, the issue of gender is often addressed merely as a trope to represent the power relations between the East and the West. As such, gender as well as sexuality is highlighted as the very source of subversion of the power relations. My discussion departs from a critique of the gendered trope of the East and the West, highlighting a postmodern agent, the allegedly feminized character Song Lining: a Chinese actor who passes for a woman for political purposes in postcolonial China. Remaining an "inappropriate/d other" in the gendered imperialist discourse, Song becomes an emergent subject, who is capable of playing gender ambiguity for reclaiming a devalued identity, that of homosexual Asian man. Discussing how the central character Rene Gallimard's masculine identity is constructed in a cross-cultural space and how it evolves, I also argue that Gallimard's melancholic death signifies a historical unsustainability of imperialist masculinity in the postmodern/postcolonial age since World War II.

Shakespeare and Arab Culture: Cases of Sulayman Al-Bassam's The Al-Hamlet Summit and Richard III, an Arab Tragedy

  • Sulayman Al-Bassam is recognized as the leading adaptor-director of Shakespeare in the Arab world of today. His adaptations have gained much attention around the globe. Celebrated cases of his Arab Shakespeare are The Al-Hamlet Summit and Richard III, an Arab Tragedy. This study intends to demonstrate that these two plays form a ground for challenging and irritating dialogue between the Middle East and the West. Shakespeare's Hamlet and Richard III are used as a discourse space for engaging with the inefficiency of Arab political culture and for exposing the economic machinations of the West. This space is constituted by the ongoing process of politically inclusive affiliation and exclusive disjunction, with the result that is not relevant to notions of synthesis and symbiosis. The process corresponds with that of distancing and identification in which the strategy of subversion is employed in order to unveil Western prejudices. Al-Bassam materializes Shakespeare's text as a gateway to understanding Arab society and culture, and to investigating questions as to how the modern Arab world could negotiate their cultural currencies with the West.

메어리 셸리의 『프랑켄슈타인』에 나타난 이방인과 환대의 문제 (Strangers and Hospitality in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein)

  • This paper explores the issue of strangers and of hospitality in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, based on Kant's concept of hospitality as "the right of a stranger" and on Derrida's discussion of hospitality. It first examines the similarities between the domestic relations within the Frankenstein family and Frankenstein's relation to the monster: an effort to create unity out of a multiplicity of elements, and what can be called a "debt economy." Then, reading the animation scene of the monster as a version of the advent of a stranger, it deals with the question of hospitality. More specifically, the arrival of Clerval immediately follows the animation of the monster because it effectively dramatizes the paradox that there is no hospitality without hostility. The opposition and the apposition between hospitality and hostility are also seen in the De Lacey family's welcoming Safie and rejecting the monster. Frankenstein's failure and the De Lacey family's failure to welcome the monster show that hospitality as "right" exemplified by Kantian hospitality does not apply to a stranger like the monster who has neither name nor relation and who is categorized into what Derrida terms "an absolute other." This paper also looks at Safie's problematic subversion against her father, which loses its subversive charge in the context of racial relations between Turkish Mahometans and European Christians. Safie's father looms large in the context of the issue of hospitality because his episode suggests that the category of race causes hospitality to malfunction.

크리티컬 패션의 오브제 전유 전략 (Appropriation of objects in critical fashion)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and understand the approach of critical fashion by comprehending the appropriation of art as a sociocultural phenomenon that influences contemporary fashion. This study inquired into the relevant literature to explain the theoretical background behind critical fashion, and conducted a case study using exhibition catalogues, exhibition works, articles, fashion magazines, and fashion-related websites in order to examine cases of appropriation strategies. As a subversion of meaning by using an existing transposable object image to deliver an experience unlike the actual image, subversive appropriation in critical fashion takes existing things as they are and rearranges them with the purpose of subverting social values while having its subversive style of appropriation. Referring to a style that focuses on labelling the distance between the subject, that refers and that which is referred to, referential appropriation has been reprogramming existing things with an internal and introspective attitudes. In other words, from an exploitative style of appropriation aimed at expanding the meaning with found in objects by avant-garde fashion designers, to a subversive style of appropriation aimed at subverting meanings with transposable objects by conceptual fashion designers, there has been a change toward the referential style of appropriation aimed at expanding artistic forms with created objects critical fashion designers.

리디자인(Redesign) 관점으로 분석한 사카이(Sacai) 패션디자인의 유형에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Sacai Fashion Designs Analyzed with the Redesign Perspectives)

  • Fashion is one of the main environmental pollution industries. To reduce pollution, much of the deadstock clothes are given a new value by being redesigning based on the designer's competency. This study aims to promote the revitalization of redesigning by analyzing and presenting hybrid design characteristics of the Sacai design collection, as a redesigning brand, and formative element characteristics of redesigning. A theoretical study using previous research on redesigning and related books and an empirical study analyzing the Sacai Collection were conducted. Based on the study results, there are four types of redesigning processes; recombination of heterogeneous clothing structure, reorganization by reversed function and position, reorganized composition by material processing, and mixing of heterogeneous materials. In the recombination of heterogeneous clothing structures, heterogeneous materials and structures coexist by combining the clothing components with other clothing elements. The second is the reconstruction by subversion. The third is reconstruction by material processing. The fourth is a mixture of disparate materials. This study has innovative redesign features from Sacai designs, and there are plans for a follow-up study that will analyze the work of another designer who is recognized for the excellence in redesigning.
