Procedures for estimation of axial or flexural rigidities of bridge members by neural networks are shown. To treat large scale structures containing many unkwon parameters, substructuring concept is introduced. The measurement points are selected considering the sensitivity of the element stiffnesses of interest. Utilization of relative mode vectors is found to be very effective for the local parameter estimation. Then, the study focuses on the method to obtain the training set enough to represent structures. It is shown that noise injection is effective to reduce the estimation errors caused by measurement noise. Verification of the present method is carried out using a cable-stayed bridge model.
Real-time hybrid testing is an attractive method to evaluate the response of structures under earthquake loads. The method is a variation of the pseudodynamic testing technique in which the experiment is executed in real time, thus allowing investigation of structural systems with time-dependent components. Real-time hybrid testing is challenging because it requires performance of all calculations, application of displacements, and acquisition of measured forces, within a very small increment of time. Furthermore, unless appropriate compensation for time delays and actuator time lag is implemented, stability problems are likely to occur during the experiment. This paper presents an approach for real-time hybrid testing in which time delay/lag compensation is implemented using model-based response prediction. The efficacy of the proposed strategy is verified by conducting substructure real-time hybrid testing of a steel frame under earthquake loads. For the initial set of experiments, a specimen with linear-elastic behavior is used. Experimental results agree well with the analytical solution and show that the proposed approach and testing system are capable of achieving a time-scale expansion factor of one (i.e., real time). Additionally, the proposed method allows accurate testing of structures with larger frequencies than when using conventional time delay compensation methods, thus extending the capabilities of the real-time hybrid testing technique. The method is then used to test a structure with a rate-dependent energy dissipation device, a magnetorheological damper. Results show good agreement with the predicted responses, demonstrating the effectiveness of the method to test rate-dependent components.

Seismic responses of the Hualien large scale seismic test model on a layered soil site are estimated for three recorded earthquakes with different level of peak acceleration using two different approaches of soil-structure interaction analysis. The analysis results are then compared and evaluated with the recorded. The method adopted for the analysis is based on substructuring method using a lumped parameter model in both the frequency and time domain. The study results indicate that the proposed method can reasonably estimate the earthquake responses of a soil-structure interaction system of r engineering purposes if the techniques of defining input motion and modeling of the backfilled soil are prudently selected.

Recently, many high-rise apartment buildings using the box system, composed of only reinforced concrete walls and slabs, have been constructed. In residential buildings such as apartments, vibrations occur from various sources and these vibrations transfer to neighboring residential units through walls and slabs. It is necessary to use a refined finite element model for an accurate vibration analysis of shear wall building structures. But it would take significant amount of computational time and memory if the entire building structure were subdivided into a finer mesh. Therefore, an efficient analytical method, which has only translational DOFs perpendicular to walls or slabs by the matrix condensation technique, is proposed in this study to obtain accurate results in significantly reduced computational time. If all of the DOFs except those perpendicular to walls or slabs in the shear wall structure eliminated using the matrix condensation technique at a time, the computational time for the matrix condensation would be significant. Thus, the modeling technique using super elements and substructuring technique is proposed to reduce the computational time for the matrix condensation. Dynamic analysis of 3-story and 5-story shear wall example structures were performed to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method. It was confirmed that the proposed method can provide the results with outstanding accuracy requiring significantly reduced computational time and memory.
The need for assessing dynamic response of typical industrial piping systems subjected to seismic loading motivated the authors to apply model reduction techniques to experimental dynamic substructuring. Initially, a better insight into the dynamic response of the emulated system was provided by means of the principal component analysis. The clear understanding of reduction basis requirements paved the way for the implementation of a number of model reduction techniques aimed at extending the applicability range of the hybrid testing technique beyond its traditional scope. Therefore, several hybrid simulations were performed on a typical full-scale industrial piping system endowed with a number of critical components, like elbows, Tee joints and bolted flange joints, ranging from operational to collapse limit states. Then, the favourable performance of the L-Stable Real-Time compatible time integrator and an effective delay compensation method were also checked throughout the testing campaign. Finally, several aspects of the piping performance were commented and conclusions drawn.

The objective of the paper is to clarify a methodology based on the use of the existing component mode synthesis methods for the case of two damped substructures which are coupled through a linking viscoelastic flexible substructure and for which the structural modes with free geometrical interface are used for each main substructure. The proposed methodology corresponds to a convenient alternative to the direct use either of the Craig-Bampton method applied to the three substructures (using the fixed geometric interface modes) or of the flexibility residual approaches initiated by MacNeal (using the free geometric interface modes). In opposite to a geometrical interface which is a topological interface on which there is a direct linkage between the degrees of freedom of substructures, we consider a physical flexible interface which exists in certain present technologies and for which the general framework linear viscoelasticity is used and yields a frequency-dependent damping and stiffness matrices of the physical flexible interface.
The vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI) analysis might be cumbersome and computationally expensive in bridge engineering due to the necessity of solving large number of coupled system of equations. However, VBI analysis can provide valuable insights into the dynamic behavior of highway bridges under specific loading conditions. Hence, this paper presents a numerical study on the dynamic behavior of a conventional highway bridge under strong near-field and far-field earthquake motions considering the VBI effects. A recursive substructuring method, which enables solving bridge and vehicle equations of motion separately and suitable to be adapted to general purpose finite element softwares, was used. A thorough analysis that provides valuable information about the effect of various traffic conditions, vehicle velocity, road roughness and effect of soil conditions under far-field and near-field strong earthquake motions has been presented. A real-life concrete highway bridge was chosen for numerical demonstrations. In addition, sprung mass models of vehicles consist of conventional truck and car models were created using physical and dynamic properties adopted from literature. Various scenarios, of which the results may help to highlight the different aspects of the dynamic response of concrete highway bridges under strong earthquakes, have been considered.
Superelement technique for structural analysis of large scale objects such as airplanes or vessels is effective especially in the harsh hardware environments. In this paper, a crane vessel of OHI 5000 which is capable of lifting 5000 tons in tie-backs and capable of revolving with 3000 tons is investigated in the view point of structural safety using superelements through the substructure scheme. Also an effective substructure procedure, a unique load extraction method and finite element modeling technique are demonstrated. Comprehensive reinforcement blueprints are derived based on the analysis results. Successful application of substructure technique is achieved through the structural analysis of the crane vessel. The analysis technique developed in this paper can be a guideline for similar large scale structures' relevant safety identification.

The box system that is composed only of reinforced concrete walls and slabs we adopted on many high-rise apartment buildings recently constructed in Korea. And the framed structure with shear wall core that can effectively resist horizontal forces is frequently adopted for the structural system for high-rise building structures. In these structures, a shear wall may have one or more openings for functional reasons. It is necessary to use subdivided finite elements for accurate analysis of the shear wall with openings. But it would take significant amount of computational time and memory if the entire building structure is subdivided into a finer mesh. An efficient analysis method that can be used regardless of the number, size and location of openings is proposed in this study. The analysis method uses super element, substructure, matrix condensation technique and fictitious beam technique. Three-dimensional analyses of the box system and the framed structure with shear wall core having various types of openings were performed to verify the efficiency of the proposed method. It was confirmed that the proposed method have outstanding accuracy with drastically reduced time and computer memory from the analyses of example structures.

This paper presents a new nonlinear analysis algorithm, that is, adaptive Newton-Raphson iteration method, The presented algorithm is based on the existing Newton-Raphson method, and the concept of it can be summarized as calculating the equivalent load for stiffness(ELS) and adapting this to the initial global stiffness matrix which has already been calculated and saved in initial analysis and finally calculating the correction displacements for the nonlinear analysis, The key characteristics of the proposed algorithm is that it calculates the inverse matrix of the global stiffness matrix only once irresponsive of the number of load steps. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm depends on the ratio of the active Dofs - the Dofs which are directly connected to the members of which the element stiffness are changed - to the total Dofs, and based on this ratio by using the proposed algorithm as a complementary method to the existing algorithm the efficiency of the nonlinear analysis can be improved dramatically.
