  • The hydrolysis kinetics of 2-furyl chalcone derivatives $[I]{\sim}[V]$ was investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometery in 30% dioxane-$H_{2}O$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and the structure of these compounds were ascertained by means of ultraviolet, infrared and NMR spectra. The rate equations which were applied over a wide pH range(pH $1.0{\sim}12.0$) were obtained. The substituent effects on 2-furyl chalcone derivatives $[I]{\sim}[V]$ were studied, and the hydrolysis were facilitated by the electron attrecting groups. On the basis of the rate equation, substituent effect, general base effect and final product. the plausible hydrolysis mechaism was proposed: Below pH 4.0, it was only proportional to concentration of hydronium ion, at pH $4.0{\sim}9.0$, neutral $H_{2}O$ molecule competitively attacked on the double bond. By contrast, above pH 9.0, it was proportional to concentration of hydroxide ion.

  • The Hammett's substituent constants were analyzed for the substituted-benzoic acid, -benzene and -naphthalene by LCAO MO method. Hammett's ${\sigma}$-values have been theoretically proved to treat as the sum of independent contribution of inductive effect and resonance effect. That is, Is (static inductive effect) and Id (dynamic inductive effect) corresponding to inductive effect are chosen as net charge and approximate self atom polarizability indices respectively, and ${\Delta}E^{HOMO}$ which is the difference in HOMO energy level between substituted molecule and unsubstituted molecule as resonance effect. In conclusion, it has been found that the observed ${\sigma}$-values depend on the sum of Id, Is and ${\Delta}E^{HOMO}$.

  • Kinetic studies for the reactions of O,O-dimethyl Z-S-aryl phosphorothioates with X-pyridines have been carried out in dimethyl sulfoxide at 85.0 $^{\circ}C$. The Hammett and Br$\"{o}$nsted plots for substituent X variations in the nucleophiles are biphasic concave upwards with a break point at X = H, while those for substituent Z variations in the leaving groups are linear. The negative sign of the cross-interaction constant (${\rho}_{XZ}$) implies that the reaction proceeds through a concerted mechanism for both the strongly and weakly basic pyridines. The magnitude of ${\rho}_{XZ}$ (= -0.35) for the strongly basic pyridines is greater than that (${\rho}_{XZ}$ = -0.15) for the weakly basic pyridines, indicating a change of the nucleophilic attacking direction from frontside for the strongly basic pyridines to backside for the weakly basic pyridines. The early transition state is proposed on the basis of the absence of positive deviations from both the Hammett and Br$\"{o}$nsted plots for the strong ${\pi}$-acceptor, X = 4-Ac, and small values of ${\rho}_{XZ}$ and ${\beta}_X$.

  • Kinetic studies of the reactions of O,O-dimethyl Z-S-aryl phosphorothioates with X-benzylamines have been carried out in dimethyl sulfoxide at $85.0^{\circ}C$. The Hammett (log $k_2$ vs ${\sigma}_X$) and Br$\ddot{o}$nsted [log $k_2$ vs $pK_a$(X)] plots for substituent X variations in the nucleophiles are discrete with a break region between 4-Me and H, while the Hammett plots (log $k_2$ vs ${\sigma}_Z$) for substituent Z variations in the leaving groups are linear. The sign of the cross-interaction constant (${\rho}_{XZ}$) is positive for both the strongly and weakly basic nucleophiles. Greater magnitude of ${\rho}_{XZ}$ (= 2.54) value is observed with the weakly basic nucleophiles compared to with the strongly basic nucleophiles (${\rho}_{XZ}$ = 0.17). The deuterium kinetic isotope effects ($k_H/k_D$) involving deuterated benzylamines [$XC_6H_4CH_2ND_2$] are primary normal ($k_H/k_D$ > 1). The proposed mechanism is a stepwise with a rate-limiting leaving group expulsion from the intermediate involving a frontside nucleophilic attack with a hydrogen bonded, four-center-type transition state for both the strongly and weakly basic nucleophiles.

  • Cationic azo dyes were synthesized by coupling aniline and its derivatives with 2,4-dimethyl imidazole as a coupler, and their photochromic behavior was investigated. The dyes exhibited little photochromism on wool, but to a considerable degree on Dacron T92(anionic modified polyester), the photochromism being prominent for the dye with electron-releasing substituent on diazo component. Little photochromism on wool can be attributed to a decreased mobility of dye by the various interactions between the dye and wool molecules, which interferes the cis-trans isomeriation of dye. On Dacron T92 there can not be any obstacle for the cis-trans isomerization of dye, hence reversible color change may occur. The electron-releasing substituent on diazo component may be helpful for the photochromism of dye by increasing the n-electron density of phenyl ring, which can stabilize the cis-form of the dye by the interaction with the positive charge of imidazole ring.

  • In order to express the natural color in organic light emitting diode(OLED), red, green, and blue luminescent materials are needed. While lots of red and green emitters are searched actively, not many useful blue emitters are found yet. It is due to the high energy gap for the blue emission. This research is about a synthesis of the blue emitting compound with high emission efficiency and thermal stability, which starts with carbazole and anthracene. Carbazole with bulky substituent, tert-butyl group, is connected directly to electroluminescent and thermally stable anthracene. The distance between the hole transporting group and the electron transporting group are studied for the relevance to the luminescence.

  • The rates for the reaction of substituted 2-phenylethyl tosylates with substituted pyridines were measured in acetonitrile and that of 2-PNS with substituted pyridines were investigated in both acetonitrile and methanol. The substitutent effect was accelerated by an electron-donating substituent on both substrate and nucleophile. Results showed that More O'Ferrall and quantum mechanical model of predicting transition state structure suggest the reaction proceeds via an $S_N2$ mechanism, in which bond-breaking is more advanced than bond-formation. Transition state variation predicted with the quantum mechanical model is consistent with the experimental results, whereas the predictions provided by the More O'Ferrall plots is found to be inconsistent in leaving group. In the reaction of 2-PNS, the rate constants in acetonitrile were larger than that in methanol.

  • The structural and dielectric properties of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 ceramics substituted by Nd3+, La3+, K+ and Na+ were studied over 0~50 at.% substituent content. The 1 : 1 ordering behavior of Mg2+ and Nb5+ ions in the B site sublattice was observed in Nd3+-and La3+-modified compounds. The degree of ordering was increased with Nd3+, La3+ content in the compounds. But K+-or Na+-modified compounds did not exhibit the ordering behavior. This was explained by charge and size effect of A and B site cations and oxygen vacancies. As the mole fractions of substituent increased, the maximum values of dielectric constants were rapidly decreased and the phase transitions were broadened. Phase transition temperature was correlated with the covalency of A-O and B-O bonding.

  • The oxidative decarboxylation of phenylsulfinylacetic acid (PSAA) by Cr(VI) in 20% acetonitrile -80% water (v/v) medium follows overall second order kinetics, first order each with respect to [PSAA] and [Cr(VI)] at constant [$H^+$] and ionic strength. The reaction is acid catalysed, the order with respect to [$H^+$] is unity and the active oxidizing species is found to be $HCrO_3^+$. The reaction mechanism involves the rate determining nucleophilic attack of sulfur atom of PSAA on chromium of $HCrO_3^+$ forming a sulfonium ion intermediate. The intermediate then undergoes ${\alpha}$,${\beta}$-cleavage leading to the liberation of $CO_2$. The product of the reaction is found to be methyl phenyl sulfone. The operation of substituent effect shows that PSAA containing electron-releasing groups in the meta- and para-positions accelerate the reaction rate while electron withdrawing groups retard the rate. An excellent correlation is found to exist between log $k_2$ and Hammett ${\sigma}$ constants with a negative value of reaction constant. The ${\rho}$ value decreases with increase in temperature evidencing the high reactivity and low selectivity in the case of substituted PSAAs.

  • Second-order rate constants ($k_N$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for reactions of 3,4-dintrophenyl 2-furoate (2) with a series of secondary alicyclic amines in 80 mol % $H_2O$/20 mol % dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 25.0 ${^{\circ}C}$. The Bronsted-type plot exhibits a downward curvature for the aminolysis of 2, which is similar to that reported for the corresponding reactions of 2,4-dintrophenyl 2-furoate (1). Substrate 2 is less reactive than 1 toward all the amines studied but the reactivity difference becomes smaller as the amine basicity increases. Dissection of the second-order rate constants into the microscopic rate constants has revealed that the reaction of 2 results in a smaller $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratio but slightly larger $k_1$ value than that of 1. Steric hindrance has been suggested to be responsible for the smaller $k_1$ value found for the reactions of 1, since the ortho-substituent of 1 would inhibit the attack of amines (i.e., the $k_1$ process).
