  • The gas-insulated switchgear(GIS) has made high-reliability, high-safety, compact substations possible by using $SF_6$ gas. They are likely to be further developed toward higher voltages and targer capacities, along with greater compactness and lower cost. Although $SF_6$ gas has excellent insulation performance, breakdown voltages are reduced by the conducting particles. Thus, extensive studies have been made on the breakdown characteristics of $SF_6$ gas in particle contaminated conditions. Experiments were carried out for fired particle and free particle in a coaxial electrode system with DC and AC voltages. This paper represents the experimental results of the processes involved in electrical breakdown in compressed $SF_6$ gas, where breakdown is initiated by conducting particles.

  • High speed DC circuit breakers (HSCB) are indispensable for protection of DC electric subway substations from fault current. However, the HSCB has mechanical contact to wear, which requires rather frequent maintenance, we have succeeded in developing and manufacturing a GTO DC circuit breaker using GTOs and ZnO varistors. In this paper, we describes the outline of the system itself, its characteristics and test data.

  • This paper presents an integrated fault diagnosis expert system for power systems. The proposed system diagnoses various faults occurred in both substations and transmission lines even in the case that substation fault is spreaded over the network. To cope with this problem, A meta-inference method is proposed. This scheme shares same the data structure with the pre-developed intelligent operational aid expert system installed in a practical sub-control center, without modification. This advanced integrated diagnosis system is developed using a low cost personal computer owing to the special modular programming technique. Case studies show a promising possibility of the proposed method.

  • It's essential to evaluate harmonic characteristics of electric train because harmonics have negative effects on a main circuit of electric train, substations and communication system. So, we measured harmonics of electric train during test operating on conservational railroad, In the result, we can know relation between operation mode(acceleration, breaking operation and uniform speed operation) and harmonics.

  • The concept is based on distributed wireless sensors that are attached to the incoming and outgoing power lines of secondary substations. A sensor measures only phase current characteristics of the wire it is attached to, is not synchronized to other sensors and does not need configuration of triggering levels. The main novelty of the concept is in detecting and locating faults by combining power distribution network characteristics on system level with low power sampling methods for individual sensors. This concept enables the sensor design to be simple, energy efficient and thus applicable in new installations and for retrofit purposes in both overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.

  • Very Fast Transients (VFT) originate mainly from disconnector switching operations in Gas Insulated Substations (GIS). In order to determine the rate-of-rise of Very Fast Transient Overvoltage (VFTO) in a 550 kV GIS, simulations are carried out using EMTP-RV. Each component of the GIS is modeled by distributed line model and lumped model based on equivalent circuits. The various switching conditions according to closing point-on-wave and trapped charge are simulated, and the results are analyzed. Also, the analysis of travelling wave using a lattice diagram is conducted to verify the simulation results.

  • As the power system is more complex and power demands increase, the fault currents have the tendency of increasing gradually. In the near future, it will happen that the fault currents exceed circuit breaker duty for some substations. In this paper, the resistive and inductive SFCL are applied to reduce the fault currents in korea power systems and evaluated technical and economical Impacts.

  • This paper computes the regional, seasonal and hourly representative model of load power factor considering load characteristics of all 154/22.9 kV substations. An accurately computed representative model of load power factor is studied to present a precision improvement of power system analysis and the security of the system. The method to compute representative model of load utilizes the method of applicable moving average based on the method of flow average. The EMS data are used as the source to assess the load power factor.

  • As the power system automation, especially the substation automation is currently a major issue, it has been widely studied. Since a measured value usually has an error that results in the communication process and the characteristics of a measurement device mainly depending on the reliability. The accuracy and reliability of measured values at a substation is an important factor for substation automation. In this paper, a state estimation algorithm is proposed for domestic 154kV/22.9kV distribution substations, and the results showed promising application.
