A Study on the Advanced Communication Network for Island Region (도서지역 통신망 구성 현황 및 고도화 방안)

  • Nowaday, the rapid progress toward an information- oriented society results in the regional disparity in information services. Especially, the subscribe lines in islands are not advanced due to the geographical factors and a small number of subscribe. The problem in the subscribe line deepens inequalities in the development between regions. The presents of network structure and operation of the island communication in Korea are analysed, and the methods to advance subscribe lines for islands are considered in this paper.

  • With rising demand of Internet Service, the existing communication for users (aced the restricted capability and speed, and also failed to satisfy consumer's desire for providing service-quality to them. It can be accomplished the broad-band on subscribe-line to offer various multimedia service to subscriber. But it takes a lot of times and costs. Consequently, it stands out the most economic subscribe-line for acheving a broadband scheme that new transmission technology can be realized the high-speed data communication as the present telephone-line and telephone by the general public of FTTH(Fiber To The Home). As using the pseudo line, this paper have the result that the mesured speed was improved by connecting a variable resistor on the line.

Empirical Analysis of Substitution or Complementary Effect Between WiBro and Existing Telecommunication Service (와이브로서비스와 기존 정보통신서비스간의 대체/보완관계 실증분석)

  • When new services are introduced, interaction among existing and new services has to be considered. The interaction can be characterized by the substitution or complementary effect among services. This paper analyzes how the interaction among services affects the customers' subscription decision in telecommunication services industry. Based on a face-to-face in-depth survey from a sample of 1,200 respondents, a new wireless internet access service or WiBro is analyzed to identify the substitution/complementary effect in relation to the existing other telecommunication services. Additionally, the important factors explaining both customers' subscription and substitution decisions are identified. The analysis results indicate that males and students are more likely to subscribe WIBro service. Interestingly, family size positively affects the subscription decision. However, heavy users of on-line game are reluctant to subscribe WiBro service. Among the potential WiBro subscribers, the customers who are less satisfied with the existing fixed line broadband internet access service are more likely to stop subscribing the fixed line service, which implies substitution by a new service. We believe that the consideration of the interactions among services is essential to devise a winning strategy for the new services in the highly uncertain telecommunications business environment.

  • The high-speed data service is on the increase and on the development because of using the coaxial cable which hold the most part of subscriber's loop, the transmission rate in a subscriber line has influenced by an external-electromagnetic factor such as the falling of a thunderbolt and the electromagnetic induction on transmission line. this external environment gets the noise of a communications line and then has an influence to the transmission speed and quality for the high-speed data service. this paper makes an analysis of noise characteristic appeared a subscriber communications line, measures a transmission speed per each cable-distance and resolves these relationship by putting the noise, which has affected extensively the transmission quality of ADSL service, into a subscriber line.

  • When new services are introduced, one of the drivers for market performance of them is the interactions among existing and new services. They are characterized by the substitution or complementary effects among existing and new service or the cannibalization of existing services by new services. This paper analyzes these issues in the telecommunications service industry context. To analyze them, a simple graphical tool or State Transition Diagram(STD) is developed and used. The diagram helps to clearly represent and explain the substitution, complement and cannibalization impact. Then, using the face-to-face survey of 1,200 people, a new wireless internet access service or WiBro is analyzed to identify the substitution/complement and cannibalization impacts in relation with the other competing services. Additionally, the important factors explaining customer subscription and substitution behavior are identified. The analysis results indicate that males, students or on-line game users are more likely to subscribe WiBro. Also, among the potential WiBro subscribers, customers who are less satisfied with the existing fixed line broadband internet access services are more likely to stop subscribing the fixed line service, which implies substitution by a new service. Additionally, this raises the issue of cannibalization if the existing and new services are provided by the same company. In fact we find the cannibalization effect is more serious for the cost sensitive group. We believe that our tool, approach, analysis results and their implications would be very helpful to devise a winning strategy for the new services in the highly uncertain telecommunications business environment.

  • In this paper, Digital MultiTone(DMT) is an emerging multi-carrier modulation scheme, which has been adopted for VDSL(Very high speed Digital Subscribe Line). A problem of DMT is its sensitivity to frequency offset between the transmitted and received carrier frequencies. This frequency offset introduces inter-carrier interference(ICI) in the DMT symbol. This paper is proposed an ICI cancelation scheme using Kalman Filtering. The performance of the proposed method is compared with conventional methods in terms of bit error rate performance, bandwidth efficiency, and computational complexity. Through simulations, it is shown that for high values of the frequency offset and for higher order modulation schemes, the EKF(Enhanced Kalman Filtering) method perform better than the others.

  • In Korea, Private security companies has steadily grown and amounts to 2,051 places as of November 30, 2002. Private security in korea is carrying out firm name role assignment to have held the police and public peace environment change factors for a standard faithfully, and protects social a little property that is a basic purpose, and it is spare no efforts in loss prevention. In spite of numeral increase of private security companies, private security companies have many problem. Moreover, they mostly did not have any remarkable in-house expertises in their own business under tough conditions. Under the unfavorable circumstances including insufficient investment and education in private security guard, there have been actually little further studies on private security business in practices. So this study mainly focused on addressing the installation security business managed by authorized companies, which amount to 96%(1,963 companies) of total 2,051 domestic security companies. Furthermore, the study formulated and modeled a series of business procedures in private security companies.   • This study analyses the avatar service, which is recognized as an alternative strategy of animation industry. The research questions of this study are following: (1) How have the avatar services been developed and what are the present dominant types? (2) Which structural characteristics of e-business environment are needed for the success of avatar services? (3) What is the economic characteristics of avatar business model? To solve these research questions, the basic conditions and the structural characteristics of avatar services have been investigated. In the first place, two forms of avatar service are classified. One is the internet service site whole primary service is to provide chatting service based on avatar service. The other is the portal site in which many kinds of products and services are presented as bundles to meet the needs of internet users. So avatar service is one of bundles which those portal sites are providing with. In this study, the big five internet service sites are selected based on the profits they earned through the sales of avatar service. The result of analysis is that the pricing strategy of those big five sites is very different from those of traditional off-line markets. The pricing mechanism are based on the value which internet users endow with the avatar items, not based on the costs of making the products. Avatar is the representative informative goods. The informative goods have the original cost structures, constant fixed costs and zero marginal costs, so the providers of avatar services make much of the subjective values of consumers. The sayclub, which is the most successful avatar service site and earn the average sales of 3 billing won a month, takes the aggressive strategy of pricing avatar items at highest price in the industry. The avatar service providers which make lots of profits are planning of making differentiate the services, introducing well-known brand items and star-named items. Nevertheless, the fact that the members of the sayclub are not decreasing means that the network effect of the site is so strongly manifest. Moreover, the costs the members have paid for the avatar items are so big not as to switch from one site to the other site, it can be very costly. These switching costs are endemic in high-technology industries and digital contents industries. It can be so large that switching suppliers is virtually unthinkable, a situation known as 'lock-in'. When switching costs are substantial, competition can be intense to attract new customers, since, one they are locked in, they can be a substantial source of profit. The consumers of avatar items have switching costs if they subscribe for the new avatar service site. The switching costs can be subscription costs as well as the costs of giving up the items they already paid for. One common example of switching costs involves specialized supplies, as with inkjet printer cartridges. In this example, the switching cost is the purchase of a new printer. The market is competitive ex ante, but since cartridges are incompatible, it is monopolized dx post. So the providers of printer/cartridges set pricing printer so cheap and cartridges expensive. On the contrary, since the avatar service can be successful with the strong network effect, the providers of avatar services have to compete aggressively for new customers. So they allow the subscription at a low price(almost marginal cost) in the early market. The network effect can be maximized when the members are sufficiently growing. The providers which have the monopoly power with sufficient subscribers. begin to raise the prices over the lifetime of the product and make profits.

Effects of firm strategies on customer acquisition of Software as a Service (SaaS) providers: A mediating and moderating role of SaaS technology maturity (SaaS 기업의 차별화 및 가격전략이 고객획득성과에 미치는 영향: SaaS 기술성숙도 수준의 매개효과 및 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • Firms today have sought management effectiveness and efficiency utilizing information technologies (IT). Numerous firms are outsourcing specific information systems functions to cope with their short of information resources or IT experts, or to reduce their capital cost. Recently, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) as a new type of information system has become one of the powerful outsourcing alternatives. SaaS is software deployed as a hosted and accessed over the internet. It is regarded as the idea of on-demand, pay-per-use, and utility computing and is now being applied to support the core competencies of clients in areas ranging from the individual productivity area to the vertical industry and e-commerce area. In this study, therefore, we seek to quantify the value that SaaS has on business performance by examining the relationships among firm strategies, SaaS technology maturity, and business performance of SaaS providers. We begin by drawing from prior literature on SaaS, technology maturity and firm strategy. SaaS technology maturity is classified into three different phases such as application service providing (ASP), Web-native application, and Web-service application. Firm strategies are manipulated by the low-cost strategy and differentiation strategy. Finally, we considered customer acquisition as a business performance. In this sense, specific objectives of this study are as follows. First, we examine the relationships between customer acquisition performance and both low-cost strategy and differentiation strategy of SaaS providers. Secondly, we investigate the mediating and moderating effects of SaaS technology maturity on those relationships. For this purpose, study collects data from the SaaS providers, and their line of applications registered in the database in CNK (Commerce net Korea) in Korea using a questionnaire method by the professional research institution. The unit of analysis in this study is the SBUs (strategic business unit) in the software provider. A total of 199 SBUs is used for analyzing and testing our hypotheses. With regards to the measurement of firm strategy, we take three measurement items for differentiation strategy such as the application uniqueness (referring an application aims to differentiate within just one or a small number of target industry), supply channel diversification (regarding whether SaaS vendor had diversified supply chain) as well as the number of specialized expertise and take two items for low cost strategy like subscription fee and initial set-up fee. We employ a hierarchical regression analysis technique for testing moderation effects of SaaS technology maturity and follow the Baron and Kenny's procedure for determining if firm strategies affect customer acquisition through technology maturity. Empirical results revealed that, firstly, when differentiation strategy is applied to attain business performance like customer acquisition, the effects of the strategy is moderated by the technology maturity level of SaaS providers. In other words, securing higher level of SaaS technology maturity is essential for higher business performance. For instance, given that firms implement application uniqueness or a distribution channel diversification as a differentiation strategy, they can acquire more customers when their level of SaaS technology maturity is higher rather than lower. Secondly, results indicate that pursuing differentiation strategy or low cost strategy effectively works for SaaS providers' obtaining customer, which means that continuously differentiating their service from others or making their service fee (subscription fee or initial set-up fee) lower are helpful for their business success in terms of acquiring their customers. Lastly, results show that the level of SaaS technology maturity mediates the relationships between low cost strategy and customer acquisition. That is, based on our research design, customers usually perceive the real value of the low subscription fee or initial set-up fee only through the SaaS service provide by vender and, in turn, this will affect their decision making whether subscribe or not.
