  • We investigated on the submission of multiple candidates in speaker-independent speech recognition by VQ/HMM. Submission of fixed number of multiple candidates has first been examined. As the number of candidates increases by two, three, and four, the recognition error rates were found to decrease by 41%, 58%, and 65%, respectively compared to that of a single candidate. We tried another approach that the candidates within a range of Viterbi scores are submitted. The number of candidates showed geometric increase as the admitted range becomes large. For a practical application, a combination of the above two methods was also studied. We chose the candidates within some range of Viterbi scores and limited the maximum number of candidates submitted to five. Experimental results showed that recognition error rates of less than 10% could be achieved with average number of candidates of 3.2 by this method.

  • This study attempted to determine the characteristic features of postpartum dairy cows during their return to estrus. Moreover, it investigated the effects of abnormal ovarian cycles (AOC) on subsequent reproductive performance and the relationship between normal ovarian cycles (NOC) and the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) level postpartum. Incidentally, 56.3% of the Holstein cows and 66.7% of the Jersey cows had NOC, whereas the 43.7% and 33.3% of the Holstein and Jersey, respectively, had AOC. Within 100 days of calving, the cows with AOC had significantly lower rates of artificial insemination (AI) submission as well as pregnancy and a significantly longer interval to first AI, as compared to that in the cows with NOC. Additionally, the cows with NOC had a significantly higher first AI conception rate than that in the cows with AOC. In this study, of the 32 Holstein cows, 8 resumed their ovarian cycle within 20 days of calving, 10 resumed the cycle with 21-40 days of calving, 8 within 41-60 days of calving, while the remaining 6 did not resume their ovarian cycles until 60 days postpartum. Furthermore, the likelihood ratios of incidence of NOC are 0.93, 1.94, and 0.38, respectively, in the groups with BUN levels < 15, 15-19.9, and ≥ 20 mg/dl. In conclusion, AOC postpartum adversely affects reproductive performance such as AI submission rate, pregnancy rate, interval to first AI and first AI conception rate; moreover, an increase or decrease in the BUN levels beyond 15-19.9 mg/dL leads to the AOC postpartum.

  • We observed the symptoms that occur to students who dislike mathematics when they study mathematics and the data that mathematics is related to foreign language. This study investigated the relation between mathematics and foreign language. Continuous immersion aids not only in acquiring language but also in learning mathematics. For continuous immersion, it is essential to organize small class. We organized small class and compared large class with small class about how the relation between mathematics and language appears in achievement, rate of presence, rate of submission of report, and attitude and enthusiasm. Based on the result, we try to find out the way to increase understanding mathematics and level up the achievements.

  • We present an innovative method of multi-physics application involving energetic materials. Energetic materials are related to reacting flows in extreme environments such as fires and explosions. They typically involve high pressure, hish temperature, strong non-linear shock waves, and high strain rate deformation of metals. We use an Eulerian methodology to address these problems. Our approach is naturally free from large deformation of materials that makes it suitable for high strain-rate multi-material interaction problems. Furthermore we eliminate the possible interface smearing by using the level sets. We have devised a new level set based tracking framework that can elegantly handle large gradients typically found in reacting gases and metals. We show several work-in-progress applications of our algorithm including the Taylor impact test, explosive venting and additional confined explosion problems of modem interest.

  • As business-to-business electronic commerce becomes activated, usage rate of standard electronic documents is rapidly increasing. Types and forms of standard documents exchanged between businesses have also been changed. Instead of EDI documents, mainly used in the initial phase, XML documents have been actively used recently. However, most framework standards for XML documents just specify basic syntax rules, messaging protocols, and standard documents. As a result, it has been usually difficult to procure efficiency and effectiveness in developing new standard electronic documents. Reflecting the experiences of developing UN/EDIFACT, UN/CEFACT provides a methodology and library for reusing standard data items as components when defining electronic documents. However, much additional effort is required for applying the methodology and library to the development process. In order to improve this situation, this paper proposes a system for supporting the development process by reusing various resources of registries/repositories, focusing on UN/CEFACT submission forms for standard electronic documents.

  • Purpose: This study compares and analyzes the design drawing changes that occur during the design process between hospital design competition and the final detailed design. Based on this, factors that can reduce the rate of changes in drawings are derived. The purpose is to provide basic data to lessen the rate of the changes in the process of architecture design and can be reflected in the design competition guidelines. Methods: In this study, cases of hospitals are selected which are built in 5 recent years. Then compare and analyze the drawings which was drawn in the process from submission of competition to final design. After investigating the design changes that occur after the design competition, analyze the fixed-elements which are the main causes of design changes. Fixed-elements can be narrow down into few architecture-factors such as vertical-core, shafts, public-corridor, HAVC, and mechanical/electrical spaces. Results: Result of the rate of changes in each selected hospital floors can be sorted into variable-elements and fixed-elements which tells that the higher the rate of changes of the fixed-elements, the higher the rate of changes of the variable-elements. Implications: In other words, it can be said as the lower the change rates of the fixed-element, lower changes in whole design changes which represents that the greater the efficiency can be shown in the design process.

  • With the increasing use of chemicals in domestic businesses, the possibility of fire explosion and poisonous material leakage accidents is also increasing. Accordingly, the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency(KOSHA) has implemented the process safety management (PSM) system for a long time. However, process safety report submission has been providing and operating e-PSM since 2016 to address these problems as it is difficult to increase budget spending due to the need for professional capabilities and commissioning the report to consulting institutions. Therefore, this study conducts questionnaires on whether e-PSM system that is well utilized in the field, focusing on existing PSM business sites. In order to find out the activation method that can solve the deficiency factors by analyzing various inconveniences and problems accurately, we propose three improvement methods as educational aspect, promotional direction of e-PSM system, and institutional aspect.

  • Eighty dairy farms (38 farms responded) in Palmerston North area of New Zealand were questioned by mail questionnaire on: 1) general characteristics, 2) milk yield and feed supplementary, 3) reproductive efficiencies (12 questions) and 4) reproductive disorders (12 questions) from February to July, 1998. Among those 4 items, the reproductive efficiencies (3) and disorders (4), various diseases and culling rates were surveyed and analyzed for Korean dairy farmers (especially in Cheju island) and compared with New Zealand. The results are as follows: 1. Fifteen farms in 38 dairy farms relied entirely on artificial insemination, the rest of 23 dairy farms (60.5%) raised 5∼6 bulls to increase conception rate. The dairy farmers in Palmerston North used artificial insemination from Oct 4th to Dec 10th for 42.8 days, and then used bulls from that point to coming Jan 10th for 41.4 days. The submission rate within 3, 6 and 10 weeks following the initiation of AI season was 84.7, 93.9 and 97.9% respectively. 2. The average age of heifers at the first estrus, pregnancy and calving was 11.0, 18.0 and 24.7 months respectively, and an average 1.4 estrus cycles were required for conception. The intervals of estrus recurrence and the following conception after calving were 38 and 68 days respectively. 3. Among inseminated cows, calving, abortion and empty cow was 90.9, 1.6 and 7.4% respectively. Calving rate decreased according to increasing farm size, while the number of empty cows decreased. 4. Stillbirth, retained placenta and delivery abnormalities were 5.3, 3.7 and 5.5% respectively, not different depend on herd size. 5. The incidence of milk fever, grass tetany, and ketosis was 3.6, 3.0 and 1.0%, respectively. The delivery abnormality and mastitis treated with medicine were 3.1 and 6.7%, but decreased according to farm size. Lameness was 8.6% on average, but over 10% in farms which has more than 400 milking cows. 6. Among the culled cows (15.5% of the total), those culled due to an old age, lameness and other diseases were 2.9, 1.8 and 4.3% respectively and those culled due to low milk production, reproductive abnormality reduced with farm size. 7. Compared with the data collected in Korea, the reproductive efficiency was better, and lameness, metabolic problem and culling rate were higher in New Zealand

  • The batch job scheduler recognizes the computational resources configured in the cluster environment and plays a role of efficiently arranging the jobs in order. In order to efficiently use the limited available resources in the cluster, it is important to analyze and characterize the characteristics of user tasks. To do this, it is important to identify various scheduling algorithms and apply them to the system environment. Most scheduler software reflects the user's work environment, from job submission to termination, as well as the state of the inventory and system status of the entire managed object. It also stores various information related to task execution, such as job scripts, environment variables, libraries, wait for tasks, start and end times. In this paper, we analyze the execution log of the scheduler such as user 's success rate, execution time, and resource size through information related to job execution through batch scheduler. Based on this, it can be used as a basis to optimize the system by increasing the utilization rate of resources.
