Higher yield in rice paddies is greatly dependent on adequately balanced and timely supply of water. A majority of rice paddy in Korea is generally irrigated by rainfall, but in many cases it has to be supplemented by artificial irrigation for optimum rice culture. Although the water requirement of rice plant is for higher Than that of athec crops, submerged condition of rice paddy is not Necessarily required. The moisture requirement of rice plant varies with its growing stages, and it is possible to increase the irrigation efficiency through reduction of water loss due to percolation in rice paddies. An experimental plots were set up by means of sandomized block design with three duplication; (a) All time submerged, (b) Economically controlled, and (c) Extremely controlled. Three different irrigation periods Were (a) Initial sage, (b) Inter-stage, and (c) Yast stage. The topsoil of the three plots were excavated to the depth of 30 cm and then compacted with clay of 6 cm thickness. There after, they were piled up with the excavated top soils, leveled and cored with clay of 6 cm thickness around footpath in order to prevent leakage. The results obtained from the experiments are as follows, 1. There is no difference among the three experiments plots in terms of physical and chemical conditions, soil properties, and other characteristics. 2. Culm length and ear length are not affected by different irrigation methods. 3. There is no difference in the mature rate and 1, 000 grain weight of rice for the three plots. 4. The control plot which was irrigated every three days shows an increased yield over the all the time submerged plot by 17.8 percent. 5. The clay lined plot whose water holding capacity was held 5 days long, needs only to be irrigated every 7 days. 6. The clay lined plot shows an increased yield over the untreated plot ; over all-the-time submerged plot by 18 percent ; extremely controlled plot by 18 percent, and economically controlled plot by 33 percent. 7. It may be saved in water requirement about one Thirds.
This study assessed the contribution of emergent vegetation (Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia, and Nelumbo nucifera) to the submerged surface area, the amount of biofilms attached to the submerged portions of the plants, and the treatment performance of a free water surface (FWS) constructed wetland. Results showed that a 1% increase ($31m^2$) in the vegetative area resulted in an increase of $220m^2$ of submerged surface area, and 0.48 kg Volatile Suspended Solids (VSS) of attached biofilm. As the vegetation coverage increased, effluent organic matter and total Kjeldahl nitrogen decreased. Conversely, a higher nitrate concentration was found in the effluent as a result of increased nitrification and incomplete denitrification, which was limited by the availability of a carbon source. In addition, a larger vegetation coverage resulted in a higher phosphorus in the effluent, most likely released from senescent biofilms and sediments, which resulted from the partial suppression of algal growth. Based on the results, it was recommended that constructed wetlands should be operated with a vegetation coverage of just under 50% to maximize pollutant removal.

Rice is one of the major staple food in Asia, covering around half of the world population. More than 40% of rice cultivation area are subject to abiotic stresses such as drought, submergence and phosphate deficiency. Pyramiding useful genes into elite variety is a promising strategy to develop tolerance varieties to multiple abiotic stresses. However, some genes are not functionally compatible when they are introgressed into the same elite variety. Here, we tested the functional compatibility of Sub1 and Pup1, major QTLs for tolerance to submergence and phosphate (P)-deficiency conditions, respectively. Phenotypic analysis revealed that IR64-Sub1 Pup1(SP1) plants harboring both Sub1 and Pup1 QTLs showed significant tolerance to submerged conditions, similarly in IR64-Sub1 (Sub1) plant, while SP1 plants failed to tolerate to P-deficiency conditions; only IR64-Pup1 (Pup1) showed strong P-deficiency tolerance phenotype. In submerged conditions, the expression levels of Sub1A and PSTOL1, major genes for Sub1 and Pup1 QTLs, respectively, were not significantly different in between Pup1 and SP1 plants. On the other hand, the expression of both Sup1A and PSTOL1 was significantly downregulated in P-deficiency conditions, suggesting that Sub1 and Pup1 repressed gene expression each other in P-deficiency conditions. These results suggest Pup1 does not compromise the Sub1 function in submerged conditions while Sub1 suppresses the function of Pup1 in (P)-deficient condition, possibly by regulating transcript level of Pup1. In conclusion, Sub1 and Pup1 are functionally compatible in terms of submergence tolerance but not in P-deficiency conditions. Further analysis need to be performed to elucidate how Sup1 suppresses the function of Pup1 in P-deficiency conditions.
This study aims at a proposal of the plan that can improve raw water quality by an experimental study using influent water of Nak-dong river, which has been used as raw water for drinking in U-city, through the establishment of the submerged biofilter process PILOT PLANT of media packing channel method. From the analysis of removal efficiency for each water quality item of the collected sample, following results are obtained. First of all, the removal rate of suspended material, BOD, COD, T-N, TOC, turbidity, and $NH_3$ -N appear 82%, 78%, 42%, 15%, 57%, 43%, 54%, and 55% respectively and it is known that the submerged biofilter process of media packing channel method takes effects on water quality improvement from the above analysis results of water treatment efficiency. And the analyzed results for water temperature, residence time, and activities of microorganism, which can be the factors affect on water quality improvement, are as follows. 1) The removal rate variation of SS, BOD, and COD attendant on water temperature change is examined and it is known that the removal rate increases at $13^{\circ}C$ or above. 2) The removal rate of SS, BOD, and COD attendant on residence time is most active in the range of 0~18hr, 0~1.8hr, 0~2.7hr respectively, so it is found that the removal rate becomes smaller after 2.7hr. 3) From the examination of microorganism activity with the abundance of normal bacteria, it is found that the floating bacteria decrease as the flow distance from raw water inflow point of PILOT PLANT increases, and the adhesive bacteria have no concern with the flow distance. And it its known that the biomass of fine algae decreases as the flow distance from the raw water inflow point of PILOT PLANT increases from the examination with Chl-a.
This study was carried out to know the influence of turbidity of submerged water on photosynthetic rate of rice plant after water submerging treatment. Rice plants were transplanted in the pot at maximum tillering stage and they were sumberged for 3days at meiotic stage, 20days after transplanting, in the plastic container which had the clear and turbid water temperature adjusted around 24 to $25^{\circ}C$. Photosynthetic rate at 6 hours recovery after submergence was 41.5 to 54.2% compared to the control, but in the case of cultivar 'Nagdongbyeo', it was rapidly increased by 97.3 to 104.6% in the clear water and by 68.6 to 77.5% in the turbid water at 2 to 4 days recovery after submergence. Photosynthetic rates per plants at 6 hours to 4 days recovery after submergence were 128.3 to 245.5 $C_2$ mg.hr.$^{-1}$, in 'Samgamgbyeo' and 71.1 to 162.4 $CO_2$, mgㆍhr.$^{-1}$ in 'Nagdongbyeo' Photosynthetic rate to respiration ratio of rice plant recovery after submergence was lower compared to control plant and it was lower in 'Nagdongbyeo' than that in 'Samgangbyeo'.ngbyeo' than that in 'Samgangbyeo'.gangbyeo'.pos;.

We have studied the changes of the environmental and vegetational factors according to the hydro-seral stages in the shoreline of the lagoons, Korea. We have divided seral stages into 7 stages from open water stage to the stratified forest stage considering as the characteristics of water body, dominance of submerged and emergent plant, and development of the shrub, subtree and tree layer. According to the successional stage, water depth gradually decreased and water quality changed from seawater to brackish water and from brackish water to fresh water, organic matter in a soil layer gradually increased, and the litter layer grew up. As the development of the vegetation structure, the life-form of the vascular plants changed as follows; open water ${\rightarrow}$ submerged plant and floating-leaved plant ${\rightarrow}$ emergent plant and submerged plant ${\rightarrow}$ emergent plant ${\rightarrow}$ emergent plant, mesophyte and scrub ${\rightarrow}$ mesophyte. In the late seral stage, the 3 different forest types were established by the water retention or drainage and nutrient accumulation of the soil layer. Salix dominant forest developed in the wetted sites, the forest type dominated by Pinus thunbergii, Carex pumila and mesophytes developed in the well drained sites causing by sand substrate, and the forest type dominated by the planted or ruderals such as Pinus densiflora, Robinia psedo-acacia, Festuca ovina, Setaria viridis ect. developed in the sites composed of forest soil introduced by artificial reclamation.

In activated sludge process, sludge settling condition is affected by organic loading rate or operation condition, and if settling condition is getting worse, it is common that overall process fails due to wash-out of biomass causing low concentration in the aeration tank. Also activated sludge process has such several problems as requiring large area, consuming a lot of power and producing large volume of sludge. Increased public concern over health and the environment combined with a strong desire to reduce capital, operating and maintenance costs, have created a need for innovative technologies for building new high quality effluents which vail meet 21st century crkeria. MBR(Membrane Bioreactor) process consists of a biological reactor and ultrafiltration(UF) membrane system that replaces the conventional clarifier of an activated sludge process. The main operating advantages of this system are that the quality of the effluent is independent of the settleability of the mixed liquor and that the effluent is free of suspended solids in any operating condition. It is possible to eliminate clarifier and to reduce the volume of aeration tank because it can afford to accumulate high biomass concentration in the bioreactor(20, 000~30, 000mg/L), which would not be possible in a conventional activated sludge process. Therefore, this process reduces overall treatment plant area. In addition to those advantages, Longer SRT condition enables higher sludge digestion in MBR process so the sludge volume produced is 50 to 70% lower than that of conventional activated sludge process There are two kinds of MBR process according to the allocations of membrane. One is cross flow type MBR of which module is located outside of the bioreactor and mixed liquor is driven into the membrane module. The other is submerged type MBR process of which module is submerged in the bioreactor and mixed liquor is generally sucked from the lumen side. addition to that the cake layer is often removed by the uplifting flow of bubbling air. A submerged MBR process is superior to a crossflow MBR in regard to the power consumption because suction pressure of a submerged MBR is generally lower than that of a crossflow MBR which has recirculation pump. A submerged MBR, therefore, has the potential to be applied to small wastewater treatment plants that need low cost treatment systems.
This study was carried out to select the utilizable vegetations for the stabilization of slopes and river banks, landscape creation and water quality cleansing in dams, lakes and streams. In this study, 4 species were investigated for their survival and growth characteristics in the complete and partly flooding conditions with various flooding periods. The results are as followings; Acorus calamus var. angustatus showed the highest flooding tolerance based on survival rate and growth condition. Equisetum hyemale, Acorus gramineus and Salix gracilistyla followed after Acorus calamus var. angustatus in the order of flooding tolerance. Particularly, A. calamus var. angustatus and E. hyemale showed higher survival rate and grew well even when they were completely submerged in the water up to 120 days. As they were partially submerged longer, they grew better. This ascertained that they had strong flooding tolerance. When A. gramineus were completely submerged in the water, their growth was disturbed but they did not die in the complete submergence up to 120 days. A. gramineus had a small growth disturbance and showed the highest vitality of leaves among the species. Though S. gracilistyla showed somewhat low growth rate in the complete water submergence and died in 90 days, it also can grow back to normal with some changes of water level.

Submerged breakwaters installed under the water surface are a representative coastal structure to prevent coastal erosion, and various types of submerged breakwaters have been proposed and discussed so far. Generally, submerged breakwaters make the complex wave fields due to abrupt change in water depth at the crown of the breakwater. In this study, wave heights and mean water level formed around a breakwater are examined numerically for three-dimensional permeable submerged breakwaters. OLAFOAM, CFD open source code, is applied in the numerical analysis, and the comparisons are made with available experimental results on the permeable upright wall and the impermeable submerged breakwater to verify its applicability to the three-dimensional numerical analysis. Based on the applicability of OLAFOAM numerical code, the wave height and mean water level distribution formed around the permeable submerged breakwaters are investigated under the formation condition of salient. The numerical results show that as the gap width between breakwaters decreases, the wave height in the center of the gap increases, while it decreases behind the gap, and the installing position of the breakwater from the shoreline has little influence on the change of the wave height. Furthermore, it is found that the decrease of the mean water level near the gap between breakwaters increases with decreasing of the gap width.

Anti-foaming agents and foam fences have been used to remove the foam at the outfall of power plants, but there are some problems as consumption of maintenance costs and insufficiency of effect. Therefore, development of the methods how to remove the foam by stable coastal structure has been required. In this study, numerical simulation of air entrainment was carried out to design the submerged outlet structure for reducing foam using curtain walls. The air entrainment rate and the discharge of entrained air change according to the shape of weir and curtain wall. Hence, it is necessary to design the optimum section through comparison of each case. The optimum section which has the maximum rate of foam reduction was determined by the simulation results. In addition, it was found that the flow velocity at the submerged outlet is to be smaller than 1 m/s and the submerged depth of curtain wall is to be taller than height of the submerged outlet section.
