  • HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) is an underwater cable between Jeju Island and Haenam in main land and supplies approximately $50\%$ of electrical usage in Jeju Island. If there is any power failure due to HVDC, it will cost approximately 50,000 US dollars per day including Thermal Electrical Generation. Therefore it is absolutely necessary to recover the problem in rapid timely basis. Present survey method in Korea is done by scuba diver with air cylinder resulting very poor visual inspection. Other option is by only visual camera attached on miniature ROV for solely suey Purpose. This method does not includeburial depth of cable, cable position, cable condition & etc??‥‥.??? In result, current method does not generate any scientific or sophisticated data which does not allow any intelligent management decision. In conclusion, new method and new systems are needed urgently to upgrade current HVDC underwater cable survey technique in Korea to minimize the cost and time factors.

  • As the offshore wind farms increase, interest in the efficient power system configuration of submarine cables is increasing. Currently, transmission system of the offshore wind farm uses almost AC system. High temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable of the high capacity has long been considered as an enabling technology for power transmission. The HTS cable is a feasible way to increase the transmission capacity of electric power and to provide a substantial reduction in transmission losses and a resultant effect of low CO2 emission. The HTS cable reduces its size and laying sectional area in comparison with a conventional XLPE or OF cable. This is an advantage to reduce its construction cost. In this paper, we discuss the economic feasibility of the 22.9 kV HTS power cable and the conventional AC power cables for an offshore wind farm connections. The 22.9 kV HTS power cable cost for the offshore wind farm connections was calculated based on the capital expenditure and operating expense. The economic feasibility of the HTS power cable and the AC power cables were compared for the offshore wind farm connections. In the case of the offshore wind farm with a capacity of 100 MW and a distance of 3 km to the coast, cost of the 22.9 kV HTS power cable for the offshore wind farm connections was higher than 22.9 kV AC power cable and lower than 70 kV AC power transmission cable.

  • A geometrically nonlinear cable finite element is presented to use in the static or dynamic modeling of offshore and onshore structures such as guyed tower, tension leg platform or mooring buoy, submarine cable, cable-stayed bridge, suspension bridge, cable roof and so on. The cable finite element is derived directly from the compatibility equations and flexibility matrix of elastic catenary cable theory for the arbitary plane loading and geome try. A general and virsatile computer program has been developed to perform the analyses of cable member itself or cable guyed or suspened structures, in which Newmark-$\beta$ method is used to obtain a time domain solution and Newton-Raphson iteration method is used to solve the nonlinear system of compatibility equations of cable and algebraic static or dynamic equations at each time step. The results from the static and dynamic analysis of a cable member by the computer program are summarized and presented.

  • Thermal behavior of soils is mainly focused on thermal conduction, and the study of natural convection is very limited. Increase of soil temperature causes natural convection due to buoyancy from density change of pore water. The limitations of the analysis using fluid dynamics for natural convection in the porous media is discussed and a new numerical analysis is presented for natural convection in porous media using THM governing equations fully coupled in the macroscopic view. Numerical experiments for thermal probe show increase in the uncertainty of thermal conductivity estimated without considering natural convection, and suggest appropriate experimental procedures to minimize errors between analytical model and numerical results. Burial of submarine power cable should not exceed the temperature changes of $2^{\circ}C$ at the depth of 0.2 m under the seabed, but numerical analysis for high permeable ground exceeds this criterion. Temperature and THM properties of the seafloor are important design factors for the burial of power cable, and in this case effects of natural convection should be considered. Especially, in the presence of heat sources in soils with high permeability, natural convection due to the variation of density of pore water should be considered as an important heat transfer mechanism.

  • In this study, an anchor dragging simulation was performed using the CEL method to design a rock-berm, which is a protection method for submarine cables. In order to simulate an anchor drag, preliminary simulations were first performed to determine the initial anchor penetration depth, anchor drag velocity, drag angle, and distance between the anchor and rock-berm. Based on the preceding simulation results, a safe rock-berm design for protecting the submarine cables was simulated to calculate the anchor penetration depth by the anchor dragging. As a result, the penetration depth of the anchor was found to be shallower in a hard seabed, and the penetration depth was deeper in a soft seabed, the height of the rock-berm was determined according to the physical properties of the seabed.

  • A flexible concrete mattress (FCM) is a structural system for protecting submarine power or communication cables under various load types. To evaluate its of protection performance, a numerical analysis of an FCM under an anchor collision was performed. The explicit dynamics of the finite element analysis program ANSYS were used for the collision analysis. The influences of the steel reinforcement modeling and collision angle of the anchor on the collision behavior of the FCM were estimated. The FCM damage was evaluated based on the results of the numerical analysis considering the numerical modeling and collision environment.

  • The Nord Stream explosion and the damage to submarine cables in the Baltic Sea and Red Sea have raised interest in seabed warfare all the world. And each country is preparing response plans and strategy. However, although South Korea relies on submarine cables for most of its internet network and is vulnerable to threats from North Korea and neighboring countries, even the term Seabed Warfare is unfamiliar. This paper is the first domestic study to analyze the definition and characteristics of seabed warfare, the current status of each country, and suggest countermeasures. In order to respond to seabed warfare, I propose establishing a cooperative system based on Mini-multilateralism between countries that share an international rules-based order, and establishing governance with related domestic organizations and companies. And I propose a military response plan based on deterrence by denial and deterrence by retaliation
