  • In this paper, a node architecture of WDM metro network for connecting broadband access networks to converge wire/wireless networks. In consideration of the proposed node architecture and network requirements we proposed and evaluated medium access control protocols. We review WDM related technologies of sub-carrier multiplexing and optical components in order to resolve the bottleneck between optical backbone networks md access networks, and a access node architecture sharing common wavelength is introduced. Source-stripping (SS) MAC protocol Is evaluated under the proposed functional node architecture. DS+IS (Destination-Stripping and Source-Stripping) and DS+IS (Destination-Stripping and Intermediate-Stripping) MAC protocols are described to increase the slot-reuse factor which is low on SS MAC protocol. The key function of new MAC protocols regards the optical switch module of proposed node architecture and helps intermediate or source access nodes for dropping slots to destinations of different wavelength group. Thus, slot-reuse factor increases as the MAC protocols reduce the unnecessary ring-rotation of transferred slots. We use a numerical analysis to expect bandwidth efficiency and maximum throughput by slot-reuse factor Throughput network simulation, the verification of throughput, queuing delay, and transmission fairness are compared among MAC protocols.

  • The germination responses of Fraxinus rhynchophylla seeds collected from four provenances to constant temperature were investigated over the range $5{\sim}35^{\circ}C$. Difference among seeds in percentage and rate of germination and cardinal temperatures was observed. The seeds from Inje had high germination percentage at low temperature ($5{\sim}15^{\circ}C$) whereas those from Gangneung had high germination percentage at high temperature ($30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$). Three cardinal temperatures viz., the base ($T_b$), the maximum ($T_m$) and the optimum ($T_o$) for germination percentage and germination rate varied among four provenances. $T_b$, $T_m$ and $T_o$ for F. rhynchophylla seed germination as estimated by the quadratic models were the lowest in Inje while those were the highest in Gangneung. The cardinal temperatures ($T_b$, $T_m$ and $T_o$) were estimated by linear sub- and supra-optimal models for germination rate as a function of temperature response. $T_b$ was the lowest in Hoengseong while that was the highest in Gangneung. $T_m$ and $T_o$ were the lowest in Inje while those were also the highest in Gangneung. That is, the seeds from the provenance where the annual mean temperature was high had the higher cardinal temperatures ($T_b$, $T_m$ and $T_o$) as compared to seeds from the provenance where the annual mean temperature was low.

  • Objective: Since athletic performance is a most importance trait in horses, most research focused on physiological and physical studies of horse athletic abilities. In contrast, the molecular analysis as well as the regulatory pathway studies remain insufficient for evaluation and prediction of horse athletic abilities. In our previous study, we identified AXL receptor tyrosine kinase (AXL) gene which was expressed as alternative spliced isoforms in skeletal muscle during exercise. In the present study, we validated two AXL alternative splicing transcripts (named as AXLa for long form and AXLb for short form) in equine skeletal muscle to gain insight(s) into the role of each alternative transcript during exercise. Methods: We validated two isoforms of AXL transcripts in horse tissues by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and then cloned the transcripts to confirm the alternative locus and its sequences. Additionally, we examined the expression patterns of AXLa and AXLb transcripts in horse tissues by quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR). Results: Both of AXLa and AXLb transcripts were expressed in horse skeletal muscle and the expression levels were significantly increased after exercise. The sequencing analysis showed that there was an alternative splicing event at exon 11 between AXLa and AXLb transcripts. 3-dimentional (3D) prediction of the alternative protein structures revealed that the structural distance of the connective region between fibronectin type 3 (FN3) and immunoglobin (Ig) domain was different between two alternative isoforms. Conclusion: It is assumed that the expression patterns of AXLa and AXLb transcripts would be involved in regulation of exercise-induced stress in horse muscle possibly through an $NF-{\kappa}B$ signaling pathway. Further study is necessary to uncover biological function(s) and significance of the alternative splicing isoforms in race horse skeletal muscle.

  • Objective: Fusarium mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN), common contaminants in the feed of farm animals, cause immune function impairment and organ inflammation. Consequently, the main objective of this study was to elucidate DON and ZEN effects on the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and other immune related genes in the kidneys of piglets. Methods: Fifteen 6-week-old piglets were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments for 4 weeks: control diet, and diets contaminated with either 8 mg DON/kg feed or 0.8 mg ZEN/kg feed. Kidney samples were collected after treatment, and RNA-seq was used to investigate the effects on immune-related genes and gene networks. Results: A total of 186 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened (120 upregulated and 66 downregulated). Gene ontology analysis revealed that the immune response, and cellular and metabolic processes were significantly controlled by these DEGs. The inflammatory stimulation might be an effect of the following enriched Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes pathway analysis found related to immune and disease responses: cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, chemokine signaling pathway, toll-like receptor signaling pathway, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), tuberculosis, Epstein-Barr virus infection, and chemical carcinogenesis. The effects of DON and ZEN on genome-wide expression were assessed, and it was found that the DEGs associated with inflammatory cytokines (interleukin 10 receptor, beta, chemokine [C-X-C motif] ligand 9, CXCL10, chemokine [C-C motif] ligand 4), proliferation (insulin like growth factor binding protein 4, IgG heavy chain, receptor-type tyrosine-protein phosphatase C, cytochrome P450 1A1, ATP-binding cassette sub-family 8), and other immune response networks (lysozyme, complement component 4 binding protein alpha, oligoadenylate synthetase 2, signaling lymphocytic activation molecule-9, ${\alpha}$-aminoadipic semialdehyde dehydrogenase, Ig lambda chain c region, pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase, isozyme 4, carboxylesterase 1), were suppressed by DON and ZEN. Conclusion: In summary, our results indicate that high concentrations of DON and ZEN suppress the inflammatory response in kidneys, leading to potential effects on immune homeostasis.

  • When a blind hole of small diameter is drilled in the field of residual stress, strain relieved around the hole is function of magnitude of stress, patterns of stress distribution and hole geometry of diameter and depth. Relieved strain coefficients can be calculated from FEM analysis of relieved strain and actual stress. These relieved strain coefficients make it possible to measure residual stress which vary along the depth in the subsurface of stressed material. In this study, the calibration tests of residual stress measurement are carried out by drilling a hole incrementally on the cantilever or on the tensile test bar. Residual stresses can be determined from measured strains around a shallow hole by application of power series method. For the sake of reliable measurement of residual stress, much efforts should be done to measure relieved strains and hole depth more accurately comparing with conventional procedures of gage subject to the external load. Otherwise linear equations converting strains into stresses may yield erratic residual stresses because of ill-conditions of linear equations. With accurate measurements of relieved strains, residual stress even if varying along the depth can be measured. It is also possible to measure residual stress in the thin film of material by drilling a shallow hole.

  • Cu, Ni, and Mo were ion-diffused into the pure steel powder in the aqueous solution of $(CuNO_3)_2$, $Ni(NO_3)_2)_2$, and $(NH_4)_6Mo_7O_{24}$, to form partial diffusion bond prealloyed steel powder. The mechanical properties, and compacting and sintering characteristics were investigated as a function of Cu. Ni and Mo contents. The results of the this research, it was found that the smallest change of size was observed, and the good degree of hardness and tensile strength was observed when 1.50wt%Cu, 1.75wt%Ni and 0.50wt%Mo was added each other. The powder metallurgy characteristics of partial diffusion bond prealloyed steel powder containing 1.50wt% of Cu, 1.75wt% of Ni and 0.5wt% of Mo were compared to those of distalloy $AB\textregistered$ which was manufactured in Hogani Corporation of Sweden. Partial diffusion bond prealloyed steel powder of this study had good degree of hardness and density, and its dimensional stability was same to that of pure steel powder. Under the same sintering density and temperature, the tensile strength of the ion powder from this research was $15~20Kg/\textrm{mm}^2$ larger than that of distalloy AB'. also the hardness was larger in the magnitude of Hv20-30. When the powder metallurgy heat-treated, hardness and tensile strength were substantially increased.

  • The effect of Phellinus linteus methanol extract on the lipid metabolism in the liver of rat was investigated in this study. Rats were randomly divided into 6 groups including the control, $CCl_4$and high fat group plus sub-groups with Phellinus linteus methanol extract administration. Methanol extracts of Phellinus linteus were fed 50mg/kg B.W daily via drinking water. A 1.2mL of $CCl_4/kg$ body weight was administered by oral intubation twice a week for total six times. The administration of $CCl_4$ increased total cholesterol, TG, LDL and LDL-phospholipid. However, the level of liver cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly decreased while HDL-cholesterol was increased by the extract feeding. The activities of GOT, GPT, AP and LDH were greatly enhanced by the extract feeding. Electronmicrograph showed that $CCl_4$ treatment deteriorated the structure of cytoplasmic matrix with its uneven distribution. However, the extract treatment reconstituted the damaged cytoplasm and stimulated mitochondriagenesis. From these results, it was suggested that Phellinus linteus can help to recover the damaged liver function and further may help to prevent senescence diseases such as fatty liver, hypertension and hyperlipidemia.

  • Although exercise training has been utilized to improve vascular function in animals and humans, the impact of moderate intensity exercise training on fibrinolytic activities and nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability has not been well documented. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine the impact of moderate intensity aerobic exercise training on fat mass, blood lipid profiles, fibrinolytic activity, and NO levels in high-fat-diet induced rats. The body weight, fat mass, blood lipid profiles, fibrinolytic activity, and nitrite/nitrate were measured pre- and postexercise (10 weeks) training. The body weight and fat mass reduced significantly in the exercise (EX) group compared to the control (CON) group. Blood lipid profiles and low-density lipoprotein were unchanged in the EX group compared to the CON group. However, triglyceride and free fatty acid were significantly lower in the EX group compared to the CON group, and high-density lipoprotein was significantly greater in the EX group compared to the CON group. In addition, fibrinolytic activity and nitrite/nitrate were significantly greater in the EX compared to the CON group. These results suggest that 10 weeks of the moderated intensity aerobic exercise training improves blood lipid profiles, fibrinolytic activity, and the nitrite/nitrate ratio, which may improve vascular health and reduce obesity-related cardiovascular disease risks in high-fat- diet induced rats.
