PAPR Analysis of the OFDMA and SC-FDMA in the Uplink of a Mobile Communication System

  • In recent years, OFDMA(orthogonal frequency division multiple access) and SC-FDMA(Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access) have been widely studied for the uplink of a mobile communication system. In this paper, PAPR(Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) and BER(Bit Error Rate) performance of the OFDMA and SC-FDMA systems are studied in relation to the uplink of a mobile communication system. Three kinds of sub-carrier allocation methods in the OFDMA system and 2 kinds of sub-carrier allocation methods in SC-FDMA system are suggested to compare and improve system performance. Simulation results show that in the OFDMA system, the first sub-band allocation method has better PAPR reduction performance than the other methods. In the SC-FDMA system, the distributed allocation method offers similar P APR, compared with the sub-band allocation method. P APR can be further reduced by adding a spectrum shaping filter with an appropriate roll of factor. Furthermore, it is found that on average, SC-FDMA can reduce the PAPR by more than 5 dB compared to OFDMA, when the total sub-carrier number is 1,024 and the sub-carrier number allocated to each user changes trom 8 to 512. Because of the frequency diversity and low PAPR characteristics, SC-FDMA system of the distributed sub-carrier allocation method can achieve better BER performance than the OFDMA system.

On the Comparison of MTF in Sub-Band Coding Technique Employing the Human Visual System (인간의 시각특성을 고려한 Sub-Band 부호화에서 MRF 비교에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, attempts have been made to compare the subjective performance of sub-band coding (SBC) techniques incorporating four representative modulation transfer functions (MTF's) of th human visual system(HVS): Sakrison, Nill, Ngan, and Rao. In SBC, the frequency band of input signal is split into 16 equal sub-bands. In addition, 28 sub-band splitting schemd which splits more sub-bands in low spatial frequency is considered to compare the 4 MTF's effectively. In encoding of each sub-band, the weight of each sub-band obtained from the MTF of HVS is applied to bit allocation process which minimize the weighted mean square error (WMSE). The differential pulse code modulation(DPCM) coder is used to encode the lowest sub-band and the pulse code modulation(PCM) coder is used for the rest of sub-bands. It is found that the images incorporating the MTF of Rao yields the best results in subjective criteria, followed by Ngan, Nill, Sakrison, and the images not employing the HVS.

  • In this paper, we propose the method which provides efficient sub-channel allocation for handoff and new call supporting multi-media service in AMC-based OFDMA system. Firstly, we apply the multi-band method which provides different AMC method according to the location of user terminals. Also, in OFDMA system environment that a base station has a lot of sub-channels, we adopt the sub-channel allocation scheme that provides a higher priority to handoff call and real-time service about handoff and new calls with multi-meida service. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme plays a role in increasing the number of new and handoff calls meeting the required blocking rate.

  • In this paper, we propose a dynamic slot allocation algorithm for efficient transmission of VBR services in wireless ATM networks. The proposed algorithm is based on a hybrid dynamic parameter(DP) control which combines the strength of in-band control and out-of-band control by considering the variation characteristics of buffer length in distributed mobile terminals. This algorithm consists of four sub-algorithms: dynamic parameter determination algorithm, dynamic parameter transmission algorithm, estimation algorithm of the number of request slots, and prorated-allocation algorithm. As the proposed allocation algorithm based on the hybrid DP control scheme can offer nearly precise MAC level estimations of the requirements for each VBR, the algorithm makes it possible to obtain ideal allocation efficiency. The allocation efficiency of the algorithm is shown by numerical analysis. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance than conventional schemes in terms of allocation efficiency, delay and cell loss ratio under VBR traffic.

  • In this paper, we present a new method for user selection, sub-band allocation, and power allocation in order to maximize the system throughput under the constraint of transmit power in multiuser downlink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems with partial channel quality information (CQI). In previous schemes, each user in one cell transmits CQI of all sub-bands to the base station, which requires enormous feedback overhead. Therefore, we proposed an efficient power allocation and modulation and coding selection scheme in which each user transmits partial CQI and one additional information to reduce the amount of feedback. Simulation results show that we can greatly reduce the amount of feedback than full feedback system.

  • This paper describes a new algorithm for encoding spectral envelope in the time domain alias cancellation (TDAC) part of G.729.1. The spectral envelope and modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT) coefficients of the weighted code-excited linear predictive (CELP) coding error in lower-band and the higher-band input signal are encoded in the TDAC part. In order to reduce allocation bits for spectral envelope coding, a new algorithm using sub-band correlation between adjacent frames is proposed. In addition, to improve the quality of decoded signals, two bit allocation strategies using reduced bits from the proposed algorithm are proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated in terms of objective quality and bit reduction rates. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm increases the quality of sounds significantly.

  • In this paper, we investigate the method for reducing the amount of feedback in multi-user downlink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems. The objective is to maximize the total throughput of the system under the constraints of transmit power. In previous methods, each user in a cell transmits channel quality information (CQI) of its all sub-bands to the base station, which requires extremely high feedback overhead. Thus, we propose an efficient sub-band allocation algorithm in which each user transmits partial CQI and one additional information to reduce the amount of feedback. Simulation results show that we can greatly reduce the amount of feedback than full feedback system.

  • CRU (contiguous resource unit) composed of adjacent OFDMA subcarriers is popularly adopted for recently developed cellular communication standards, e.g. IEEE 802.16e/m. If multiple CRUs having different SNR are assigned to a mobile station, and multiple packet streams are independently transmitted by using H-ARQ transmission, an achievable data rate can be varied according to the channel allocation method of re-transmission packets and new transmission packets. In this paper, the optimum channel allocation method for the above stated problem, and several sub-optimum channel allocation methods to reduce the computational complexity of the optimum allocation method are proposed. According to the simulation results, a sub-optimum allocation method assigning a CRU having good SNR to new transmission packet shows marginal performance loss compared with optimum method, however, the computational complexity can be significantly reduced.

  • Auto-ID industries and their services have been improved since decades ago, and radio frequency identification (RFID) has been contributing in many applications. Product management can be the foremost example. In our industrial experiences, RFID in ultra high frequency (UHF) band provides much longer interrogation ranges than that of 13.56MHz; many more applications exist thereby. There should be several interesting and useful ideas on UHF RFID; however, those ideas can be limited due to the inevitable environmental circumstances that restrict the interrogation range in shorten value. This paper discusses the propagation interference among different types of readers (e.g, mobile RFID readers in stationary reader zone) in dense-reader environment. In most cases, UHF RFIDs in Korea will be dependent on the UHF mobile RFIDs. In this sense, the UHF mobile users accidently move into the stationary reader's interrogation zone. This is serious problem. In this paper, we analyze propagation loss and propose the effective channel allocation scheme that can contribute developing less-invasive UHF RFID networks. The simulation and practical measurement process using the commercial CAD tools and measurement equipments are presented.

디지틀 이동통신용 RPE-LTP 음성부호화기

  • 세계적인 추세에 근거하여, 디지틀 이동 통신용 음성 부호화 방식 표준안 선정을 위해 평가 대상 방식으로 DSBC(Dynamic bit allocation SubBand Coding), RPE-LTP(Regular Pulse Excited Long Term Prediction),CELP(Code Excited Linear Prediction) 등을 선정한 바 있다.본 논문에서는 이들 방식중 13 kbps RPE-LTP의 실현 및 성능평가에 관하여 다루었다. 먼저 음질에 중요한 영향을 미치는 분석/합성부호화에 근거한 파라미터 양자화 방법 그리고 채널 코딩과의 연계를 위한 비트 중요도 해석 등을 언급하였다. 끝으로 시뮬레이션 결과를 나타내었다.
