  • We investigated the feasibility of dispersion polymerization without any stabilizer, which has been considered essential for ensuring colloidal stability. By employing small amounts of a lyophilic comonomer, 4-vinyl pyridine, styrene was successfully polymerized by dispersion polymerization in aqueous alcohol without stabilizer to afford stable poly(styrene-co-4-vinyl pyridine) copolymer microspheres. The stable microspheres were produced in the 4-vinyl pyridine range of 2-15 wt% to styrene. Without 4-vinyl pyridine, severely coagulated particles were obtained, implying that the poly(4-vinyl pyridine) moiety endowed colloidal stability. The polymerization kinetics, behavior, and properties of the ultimate particles showed general features of dispersion polymerization. The study results suggest that stabilizer- tree dispersion polymerization is possible, thereby facilitating the synthesis of impurity(stabilizer)-tree polymer particles.

  • Core-shell Poly(styrene-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) (poly(St-co-NIPAm) was prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization of styrene (St) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) in aqueous solution with potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. The effects of St/NIPAm ratio, concentrations of monomer and crosslinker were studied. Also, Thermo sensitivity of microgels prepared was investigated. Particle size of microgels increased with increasing mol ratio of NIPAm to styrene. Transmittance of the microgel dispersion decreased rapidly when heated above a low critical solution temperature (near $32{\sim}34^{\circ}C$, cloud point). Swelling ratio of the microgel increased with increasing of the concentration of monomer (NIPAm) and decreased proportional to the concentration of crosslinker.

  • Cell-free expression is a powerful tool for rapid protein analysis, enabling an efficient identification of gene without cumbersome procedure of transformation and cell culture. Epoxide hydrolase (EH) gene of Rhodotorula glutinis was simply amplified by PCR, and the resultant gene was expressed in vitro using a coupled Transcription/translation system. The cell-free expressed EH protein mixture exhibited the enantioselective hydrolysis activity toward (R)-styrene oxide, representing that cell-free protein synthesis system can be used for the rapid expression of an enantioselective enzyme for an efficient identification of the chiral activity.

  • Poly (styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) was synthesized by free radical telomerization: the telomerization of styrene with $CCI_4$ by using AIBN as initiator followed by a second telomerization of methyl methacrylate using $CCI_3$ end group of the resulting polymer as the macrotelogen, with AIBN initiation, gave the styrene-methyl methacrylate block copolymer. The effects of the concentration of the macrotelogen, the concentration of monomer, the molecular weight of the macrotelogen, the reaction temperature and the concentration of the solvent on the formation of the block copolymer were investigated. Block copolymers containing up to 10 weight percent PMMA were obtained by adjusting the reaction conditions.

  • An octa-functional alkoxyamine initiator, with the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-l-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) free radical, was synthesized based on resorcinarene, with its efficiency to initiate the nitroxide-mediated free radical copolymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate (MMA) described. A difunctional analogue of this initiator was also synthesized, using resorcinol as the core molecule. The structures of the resulting initiators were confirmed by homolysis studies based on electron spin resonance spectroscopy and molecular modeling. The polymerization behavior and characteristics of the polymers obtained using these two initiators were also compared. Well-defined star-shaped and linear random copolymers, with low polydispersities and controlled molecular weights, were prepared. The efficiencies of these initiators towards copolymerization, as well as the parameters permitting the formation of well-defined polymers, were also investigated. The reactivity ratios were $r_a=0.42(a=styrene)\;and\;r_b=0.33(b=MMA)$ for the octa-functional initiator system and $r_a=0.45\;and\;r_b=0.39$ for the difunctional initiator system.

  • Flame-retardant vinyl ester (VE) resin films were developed from the mixtures of brominated and non-brominated epoxy resins via esterification with methacrylic acid without reactive diluents. The films were used to fabricate carbon fiber (CF) prepregs via a hot melt impregnation process. The viscosity of VE resins suitable for film production was optimized by mixing low-viscosity bisphenol-A and high-viscosity brominated bisphenol-A epoxy precursors. Increasing the bromine content of the cured VE resin further increased the limited oxygen index (LOI) (39%), storage modulus (2.4 GPa) at 25℃ and residual carbonization (16.1%) values compared to non-brominated VE. Manual layup of as-prepared VE prepregs with subsequent curing led to the successful fabrication of CF-reinforced composites with high tensile and flexural strength. The results from the study hold high promise for a styrene-free, environmentally friendly VE composite process in the future.

  • Copolymer of Styrene and GMA(glycidyl methachylate), having reactive ratios of $r_1=0.53$, $r_2=0.44$, was synthesized in dioxane using AIBN as free radical initiator. Followed by the reaction of ethylene diamine with copolymer PGS, amine groups were introduced to the PGS(NPGS). The composition of copolymer was determined by elemental analyzer. Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was obtained in benzene using AIBN as free radical initiator. The NPGS-PGMA blend of 50/50 composition was prepared by mixing these polymers in THF at $65^{\circ}C$. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of NPGS-PGMA blend was measured by DSC. The blend showed a single Tg. Accordingly, it was clear that the NPGS was compatible with PGMA. An intermolecular reaction between amine groups of NPGS and epoxy groups of PGMA imparts compatibility in the NPGS-PGMA blend. When the NPGS-PGMA blend was added to the incompatible PS-PGMA blend, PS-PGMA blend showed Tg change. Scanning Electron Micrograph(SEM) showed a fine morphology in this blend. Consequently, it was apparent that the NPGS-PGMA blend acted as a compatibilizer for the PS-PGMA blend.

  • Polystyrenes(PS) were grafted onto polypropylene(PP) in the PP solution by ultrasonic irradiation-initiated polymerization of styrene. The resulting products consisted of mixtures of homopolymers and PP-PS copolymer because of the homopolymerization of styrene itself and copolymerization with PP. The dependency of the designated polymerization on sonication times was investigated to monitor the evolution lion of the copolymerization. Formation of the PP-PS copolymer was confirmed by FTIR analysis of the reaction products after a proper separation procedure of free PS and PP-PS copolymer. It was found that the tendency for the formation of PP-PS copolymer was closely related with the phase behavior of the PP/styrene mixture which was also influenced by sonication time. In order to verify the effectiveness of the PP-PS copolymer as a compatibilizer for PP/PS blend, melt mixing of PP/PS/PP-PS was performed in a batch mixer. During the mixing, the average torque was higher for the blend containing PP-PS copolymer influencing compatibilization. In accordance with the results from FRIR analysis and torque measurement, the PS domain size remarkably decreased in the PP/PS/PP-PS blend.

  • The synthesis of an octafunctional resorcinarene based initiator for nitroxide mediated polymerization and its ability to yield random star copolymers of styrene and methyl methacrylate is studied. The effect of the initiator conformations towards its activity and the conditions that permit the formation of well-defined star block copolymers is also investigated in detail. The characterization of the initiator and the polymers were carried out by various spectro-analytical techniques. Well-defined random copolymers were obtained with controlled molecular weight and low PDI depending on the monomer feed.
