The purpose of this study is to investigate online school students' understanding of going to online school and their recognitions of the differences between online schools and brick and mortar schools/homeschool. A qualitative research was conducted with an 8th grade teacher and sixteen 8th grade students at an American online school. The findings of this study can be an important first step toward an in-depth understanding of online school learning environments.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the elementary and middle school students' understanding of observation, prediction, and hypothesis in everyday and science educational contexts. The questionnaires for testing understanding of three categories were developed, which obtained Cronbach alpha .91. It was consisted of 40 questions of 10 items related to observation, prediction, and hypothesis. Thy test was administrated to 868 subjects from grade 3 to grade 9. The results showed that the each level of their understanding of observation, prediction, and hypothesis ranged between $29{\~}58\%$, $43{\~}53\%$, and $10{\~}25\%$. The level of understanding of observation and prediction showed tendency to promote increasingly from grade 3 to grade 9, but the level of hypothesis did not.
There is no doubt that science -and, therefore, science education- is central to the lives of all (NGSS, 2013). This manuscript focuses on ideas in astronomy that are at the foundation of elementary students' understanding of the discipline: the apparent motion of the sun explaining the day / night cycle on Earth. According to prior research demonstrating that neither children nor adults hold a scientific understanding of the big ideas of astronomy (NRC, 1996), understanding of concepts may base students' progress towards more advanced understanding in the domain of astronomy. We have analyzed the logic of the domain and synthesized prior research assessing children's spatial representation from an earth- and a space based perspective to develop a set of learning trajectories that describe how students' initial ideas about apparent celestial motion as they take school science can be build upon. In this study elementary students' representations were compared by their resident context including urban and rural. This study may present a first look at the use of a learning progression framework in analyzing the structure of astronomy education. We discuss how this work may eventually lead towards the development and empirical testing of how children learn to describe and explain apparent patterns of celestial motion.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two different types of texts, which were narrative and expository, on the understanding of content. Elementary students' perceptions of the two types of the texts were also investigated. In the comparison of the effects on the understanding of the text contents, test scores of mind-mapping, closed-answer question, and essay test were used. The analyses of mind-mapping tests showed narrative text was more effective to figure out main concepts of the text throughout the mind-mapping test. But expository text was more effective in the hierarchical organization of the concepts. In the closed-answer questions and essay test, narrative text was more effective than expository text. However when the contents of text were difficult and complex, there was no meaningful difference between the two types of texts. The analyses of students' perceptions of the texts showed that narrative texts were preferred. Students perceived that the narrative text was more interesting and familiar. However, the perceptions of helpful text for their science learning were not different by the types of texts.
Despite the significance of fraction in elementary mathematics education, it is not easy to teach it meaningfully in connection with real life in Korea. This study aims to investigate and analyze 3rd grade students' understanding on unit fraction concepts and on comparison of unit fractions and to identify the parts which need to be supplemented in relation to unit fraction. For these purposes, I reviewed previous studies and extracted chapters which cover unit fractions in elementary mathematics textbooks based on 2009 revised curriculums and analyzed teaching contexts and visual representations of unit fractions. From this point of view, I constructed a test which consists of three problems based on Chval et al(2013) to investigate students' understanding on unit fraction. To apply this test, I selected forty-one 3rd grade students and examined that students' aspects of understanding on unit fraction. The results were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. In this study, I present the analysis results and provide implications and some didactical suggestions for teaching contexts and visual representations of unit fraction based on the discussion.
An environmentally hot issue has arisen from the plan of Young-Wall Dam Construction at Tong river in Korea lately. The point at issue is which value is bigger between the water conservation for human use in future and the ecosystem protection for the intrinsic value of nature including animals and plants there. The purpose of this study is in the qualitative understanding of college students' critical thinking ability and opinion and the environmental values of them through the analysis of their writings. Various environmental values written in the 7th revised national curriculum of Korea are used as a criteria to investigate students' environmental values in their written opinions. Various environmental values are shown up to be handled such as the anthropocentrism, ecocentrism, pro-technology etc. Students of Dept. of Environment Teaching in the Kongju National University are the subject of this study. It shows that they have a deep understanding of the Young-Wall Dam issue and assert their opinions objectively and critically. Most of them(89.5%, n=17) are against the constructional plan of the Young-Wall Dam. Students who are for the plan are proved to have pro-technology value only and the others who are against to have various values including deer ecology.
The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics and the level of fourth grade elementary students' system thinking when they learn the unit of "Journey of Water" in terms of four key elements of system thinking such as understanding of the structure of a system, non-linearity and cyclic features, inter-relations and feedback between system properties, and temporal and invisible aspects of a system. Data included students' worksheets and their responses to a set of Likert-scaled and written assessment items on water cycle. The results showed that the level of students' system thinking did not have any hierarchy in relation to the key elements of water cycle system. In addition, the aspects of individual student's system thinking on its sub-elements were different from each other. Also, there were core ideas of system thinking which were intensively considered according to a given context to understand a complex systemic subject. When students learn water cycle, understanding of non-linearity and inter-relations were weaker compared with other key elements of system thinking. Therefore, if these two factors are taught in advance, it can promote understanding of whole system of water cycle.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of improving global health nursing competency, understanding of international development cooperation and satisfaction of education for nursing students through the course of global health in nursing. Methods: This study is a design of similar experiments before and after the non-equivalent control group to verify the difference in degree between global health nursing competency and understanding of international development cooperation by the course of global health in nursing of nursing students. Results: The degree of global health nursing competency of the experimental group that took the course of global health in nursing has significantly improved compared to the control group that did not participate, and a total of 30 detailed items showed significant differences. Conclusion: In this study, the global health nursing competency and understanding of international development cooperation have improved since nursing students took the course of global health in nursing. It suggests that the development and evaluation of nursing curriculum is necessary at a time when the global health nursing competency needs to be improved.

Among many remedial approaches against the increasing unfavorableness toward school science, one of the prevalent findings studied by affective experts is that students' achievement in science and their attitude toward it has a relatively weak relationship. In contrast, cognitive experts assert that the conceptual change involves more than cognitive aspects, and may be influenced by affective factors such as beliefs, motivation, learning attitudes, and sociocultural contexts. The latter regards continuous conceptual change as leading to better student understanding of science with variables of students' attitude toward science. As an initial step toward illuminating the affective-cognitive learning aspects of science, the purpose of this study is to develop an instrument for analyzing the relationship between students' conceptual understanding and affective factors. Cognitive questionnaires from the database of distribution in students' misconceptions of physics (DMP project), and affective questionnaires from the Relevance of Science Education (ROSE project) are integrated into our instrument. The respondents are high school students in Okayama prefecture, Japan. Through the pilot test, the authors integrated attitude toward science (AS) and interest inventory (II) from ROSE into cognitive understanding (CD) from DMP. Statistical methodologies such as factor analysis and item total correlation theoretically discerned the effective sixty-three items from the two original item pools. Having discussed two validity issues, the authors suggest ongoing research associated with our affective-cognitive research perspective.
Recently, the 2022 revised mathematics curriculum has established achievement standards for equal sign and equality, and efforts have been made to examine teaching methods and student understanding of relational understanding of equal sign. In this context, this study conducted a lesson that emphasized relational understanding in an introduction to equal sign, and compared and analyzed the understanding of equal sign between the experimental group, which participated in the lesson emphasizing relational understanding and the control group, which participated in the standard lesson. For this purpose, two classes of students participated in this study, and the results were analyzed by administering pre- and post-tests on the understanding of equal sign. The results showed that students in the experimental group had significantly higher average scores than students in the control group in all areas of equation-structure, equal sign-definition, and equation-solving. In addition, when comparing the means of students by item, we found that there was a significant difference between the means of the control group and the experimental group in the items dealing with equal sign in the structure of 'a=b' and 'a+b=c+d', and that most of the students in the experimental group correctly answered 'sameness' as the meaning of equal sign, but there were still many responses that interpreted the equal sign as 'answer'. Based on these results, we discussed the implications for instruction that emphasizes relational understanding in equal sign introduction lessons.
