MR-TLCD (Magneto-Rheological Tuned Liquid Column Damper) is a new developed vibration control device, which combines the traditional passive control property with active controllability advantage. Based on traditional TLCD governing equation, this study further considers MR-fluid viscosity in the equation and by transforming the non-linear damping term into an equivalent linear damping, a solution can be obtained. In order to find a countable set of parameters for the design of the MR-TLCD system and also to realize its applicability to structures, a series of experimental test were designed and carried out. The testing programs include the basic material properties of the MR-fluid, the damping ratio of a MR-TLCD and the dynamic responses for a frame structure equipped with the MR-TLCD system subjected to strong ground excitations. In both the analytical and experimental results of this study, it is found that the accurately tuned MR-TLCD system could effectively reduce the dynamic response of a structural system.
One of the most common solutions adopted to reduce vibrations of skyscrapers due to wind or earthquake action is to add external damping devices to these structures, such as a TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) or TLCD (Tuned Liquid Column Damper). It is well known that a TLCD device introduces on the structure a nonlinear damping force whose effect decreases when the amplitude of its motion increases. The main objective of this paper is to describe a Hardware-in-the-Loop test able to validate the effectiveness of the TLCD by simulating the real behavior of a tower subjected to the combined action of wind and a TLCD, considering also the nonlinear effects associated with the damping device behavior. Within this test procedure a scaled TLCD physical model represents the hardware component while the building dynamics are reproduced using a numerical model based on a modal approach. Thanks to the Politecnico di Milano wind tunnel, wind forces acting on the building were calculated from the pressure distributions measured on a scale model. In addition, in the first part of the paper, a new method for evaluating the dissipating characteristics of a TLCD based on an energy approach is presented. This new methodology allows direct linking of the TLCD to be directly linked to the increased damping acting on the structure, facilitating the preliminary design of these devices.
This paper presents an illustrative example of the advantages offered by inserting added viscous dampers into shear-type structures in accordance with a special scheme based upon the mass proportional damping (MPD) component of the Rayleigh viscous damping matrix. In previous works developed by the authors, it has been widely shown that, within the class of Rayleigh damped systems and under the "equal total cost" constraint, the MPD system provides best overall performance both in terms of minimising top-storey mean square response to a white noise stochastic input and maximising the weighted average of modal damping ratios. A numerical verification of the advantages offered by the application of MPD systems to a realistic structure is presented herein with reference to a 4-storey reinforced-concrete frame. The dynamic response of the frame subjected to both stochastic inputs and several recorded earthquake ground motions is here analysed in detail. The results confirm the good dissipative properties of MPD systems and indicate that this is achieved at the expense of relatively small damping forces.

The objective of conventional seismic design is to ensure an acceptable safety level while avoiding catastrophic failures of structures and loss of life. Over the last many years, a large amount of research has been devoted into developing effective earthquake resistant systems in order to raise the seismic performance level of structures. The purpose of this study is to propose a new damping system, which realize not only increasing seismic performance but also easy repairing after an earthquake. The proposed damping system is slit in the bottom of wall with damping devices installed in the slit horizontally aiming to dissipate energy during earthquakes. Cyclic loading tests were conducted to investigate hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capacity. Test results show that the proposed systems exhibit a stable hysteretic response and the energy dissipation in this system is concentrated on the damping devices.

Vibration mitigation of cables or hangers is one of the crucial problems for cable supported bridges. Previous research focused on the behaviors of cable with dampers or crossties, which could help engineering community apply these mitigation devices more efficiently. However, less studies are available for hybrid applied cross-ties and dampers, especially lack of both analytical and experimental verifications. This paper studied damping and frequency of two parallel identical cables with a connection cross-tie and an attached damper. The characteristic equation of system was derived based on transfer matrix method. The complex characteristic equation was numerically solved to find the solutions. Effects of non-dimensional spring stiffness and location on the maximum cable damping, the corresponding optimum damper constant and the corresponding frequency of lower vibration mode were further addressed. System with twin small-scale cables with a cross-link and a viscous damper were tested. The damping and frequency from the test were very close to the analytical ones. The two branches of solutions: in-phase modes and the out-of-phase modes, were identified; and the two branches of solutions were different for damping and frequency behaviors.

To improve the noise and vibration problems of the existing public parking systems, new floor system was proposed. This system consists of the Sandwich Plate System(SPS), steel beam and post-tensioned steel tendons. To verify the dynamic characteristics such as the natural frequency and damping ratio of the system, the free vibration test was performed. Test results showed that the natural frequency of the SPS composite beam was 23.8Hz and it was increased by 3.8% by installing the post-tensioned tendons. The damping ratio of the specimen with tendons was about 1.64%.

MR damper is one of the most promising control devices for civil engineering applications to earthquake hazard mitigation. However, a control system including a power supply, controller, and sensors is required to maximize the performance of the MR damper and this complicated control system is not effective to most of large civil structures. This paper proposes and experimentally verified a smart passive damping system using MR(Magnetorheological) dampers by introducing electromagnetic induction(EMI) system as an external power source to MR damper. It is easy to build up and maintain EMI system, because it does not require any control system such as a power supply, controller, and sensors. Numerical simulations using experimental model of EMI system are carried to verify the effectiveness of the proposed EMI system. The performances of smart passive damping system are compared with those of passive and semiactive MR dampers.

Viscoelastic dampers have been successfully applied to building structures for reduction of vibration induced by wind or earthquakes. But accurate estimation of responses of building structures with viscoelastic dampers is very difficult, because the properties of viscoelastic damper is dependent on temperature and frequency of vibration. For efficient control of building vibration, required damping of viscoelastic damping device need be estimated and dynamic analysis method which can estimate the response of building structure with viscoelastic damper system is indispensable. In this paper, an efficient dynamic analysis method of a building structure with viscoelastic dampers is proposed. Efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are verified comparing analytic results with shaking table test results using reduced building models.
The paper presents a study on the effects of soil-structure-interaction (SSI) on the performance of the compliant liquid column damper (CLCD) for the seismic vibration control of short period structures. The frequency-domain formulation for the input-output relation of a flexible-base structure with CLCD has been derived. The superstructure has been modeled as a linear, single degreeof-freedom (SDOF) system. The foundation has been considered to be attached to the underlying soil medium through linear springs and viscous dashpots, the properties of which have been represented by complex valued impedance functions. By using a standard equivalent linearization technique, the nonlinear orifice damping of the CLCD has been replaced by equivalent linear viscous damping. A numerical stochastic study has been carried out to study the functioning of the CLCD for varying degrees of SSI. Comparison of the damper performance when it is tuned to the fixed-base structural frequency and when tuned to the flexible-base structural frequency has been made. The effects of SSI on the optimal value of the orifice damping coefficient of the damper has also been studied. A more convenient approach for designing the damper while considering SSI, by using an established model of a replacement oscillator for the structure-soil system has also been presented. Finally, a simulation study, using a recorded accelerogram, has been carried out on the CLCD performance for the flexible-base structure.
This paper summarizes the structural concept and design of the "Nakanoshima Festival Tower West" in Osaka, Japan, which is 200m high and has a super-high damping system. Its superstructure is mainly composed of a central core and outer tube frames. It has a bottom truss structure at the boundary between the low-rise and mid-rise sections of the building, where the column arrangement is changed. Besides, the high-rise section of the building has a neck truss structure. These truss structures smoothly transfer the axial forces of the columns and reduce the flexural deformations induced by horizontal loads. Oil dampers with extremely high damping capacity are installed in the rigid walls named the "Big Wall Frames" of the low-rise section. Moreover, many braces and damping devices are well arranged in the center core of each story. The damping effects of these devices ensure that all structural members are remain within the elastic range and that story drifts are within 1/150 in large earthquakes. This super-high damping structure in the low-rise section is named the "Damping Layer". The whole structural system is named the "Super Damping Structure". The whole structural systems enhance the building's safety, comfort and Business Continuity Planning (BCP) under large earthquakes.
