Computer Aided Teaching of Structural Engineering Using Adaptive Schemes in the Finite Element Method

  • A simple outline for teaching adaptive scheme based finite element method for planar problems as a part of computer aided teaching of structural engineering curriculum is presented. Displacement based finite element formulation for planar problems and representative strain value based adaptive scheme for mesh generation are considered. As examples, a cantilever beam with a concentrated load treated as a planar problem and stretching of a plate with a circular hole are analyzed with displacement based finite element method with adaptive meshes. The examples and outlines show how adaptive based finite element method may become an essential part of computer aided teaching of structural engineering.

  • In response to the sustainability requirements set in the EU Commission's "Green Deal" towards reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions, it is estimated that the structural design for deconstruction is going to contribute considerably to the sustainable development of the built environment. The demountability of multi-material structural systems basically depends on the shear connectors used in the structural system. This paper focuses on a type of demountable injected shear connector with an injected steel-reinforced resin (iSRR) which consists of spherical steel particles embedded in a resin. Its application to steel-to-concrete and steel-to-Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) decks is presented along with its benefits. In parallel, an overview of the experimental and numerical research on the evaluation of the mechanical properties of the demountable bolted connectors with iSRR is discussed. Last, detailed finite element (FE) models and a parametric study are performed to quantify the confinement level of the SRR material influenced by the oversized hole diameter.

Effects of Embeddedness and Structural Holes on Innovation Performance: The Moderating Role of Environmental Uncertainty

  • Purpose: The ability of a firm to acquire resources through marketing networks is crucial for its competitiveness. Nonetheless, the influence of these networks on the performance of a firm's innovation is still uncertain, particularly in the face of environmental uncertainty. This research investigates the impact of marketing networks, specifically network embeddedness and structural holes, on the performance of innovation in situations characterized by environmental uncertainty. Research design, data and methodology: The empirical examination was carried out within the framework of internal network entities, specifically the manufacturer-supplier-sub supplier relationships, involving the primary suppliers of a Korean engineering firm. Construct measures utilized in this study were derived from existing measures and prior research. A questionnaire survey was conducted with a major first-tier supplier of a Korean engineering firm. Proposed hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Results: The survey findings suggest that only network embeddedness has an impact on the perception of major first-tier suppliers regarding the buyer's innovation performance. Conclusions: To strengthen the empirical evidence regarding the effects of marketing networks on innovation performance, future research should take into account cultural factors such as collectivism, which is indicative of the distinctive business-to-business marketing relationships observed in the Korean context.

  • Full-scale and 1:15 scale fluid model experiments of roof ballast pavers are employed to optimize paver geometry and study wind loading and performance of roof ballast pavers. Wind pressures above and beneath pavers are conducted for buildings of different heights and in different flow conditions. The effects of the side hole size and the underneath rib height under the wind loading on pavers and the effects of roof parapet height as well as flow conditions on the performance of pavers are studied. Incorporation of wind tunnel experimental results into code statements is also provided.

  • Diesel engines have been widely used in ships and power plants because of its higher thermal efficiency, mobility and durability compared to other prime movers. Though these merits, diesel engine including main components are sometimes vibrated due to higher combustion pressure in cylinders. Especially torsional, axial and structural vibrations in propulsion shafting may be severely manifested by the malfunction of torsional and axial dampers and misfiring and unbalanced load in cylinder. The structural vibration of main body and turbocharger core hole are also occurred by the loosen top bracing and excess wear-out or failure of turbocharger's bearings. The marine diesel engine should be safely designed from these vibrations. This paper introduces experimental methods to develop the prototype of integrated vibration monitoring system for marine diesel engine.

  • This study aims to analyze the structural safety by comparing deformation and equivalent stress of door with a stiffener or no stiffener when the door crashes against something in case of overturn. Three types are classified on the basis of the no stiffener model in the vehicle door. One is the type which has a stiffener. Another is the type which has no stiffener and the other is the type which has a hole in the stiffener. These three types are compared with each other by analyzing. This side door of vehicle is the automotive part about the kind of vehicle as Mercedes Benz E-Klasse scaled down as 1/18 times as the real size. The study model of vehicle door is modelled by CATIA program and it is analyzed by ANSYS.

  • Since many design problems in the railroad, aerospace and machine structures involve considerations of the effect of cyclic loading, manufacturing and quality control processes must fully account for fatigue of critical components. Due to the sensitivity of the Paris law, it is very important to calculate the ΔK numerically to minimize the error of predicted fatigue life in cycles. It is shown that the p-version of FEM based on LEFM analysis is far better suited for computing the stress intensity factors than the conventional h-version. To demonstrate the proficiency of the proposed scheme, the welded T-joint with crack problem of box car body bolster assembly and a crack problem emanating Iron a circular hole in finite strip have been solved.

  • Deep-trenched photonic crystals passing through InGaN/GaN quantum well structural layer have been fabricated on the surface of GaN-based light emitting diode(LED) using by electron beam nanolithography. The lattice constant and hole diameter of the photonic crystals are 230nm and 140nm, respectively. The structural and electro-optical properties have been investigated by scanning electron microscope(SEM) and power-current-voltage(L-I-V). Electroluminescence from GaN-based LED with deep-trenched photonic crystal shows the higher intensity than that without photonic crystal.

  • The design of an occupant protection equipment has been considered as the important process in developing a new car since the crash performance plays an important role on the market. The cost is increased when an unexpected real test is carried out in the proto-design stage. Thus, the exact prediction of a crash performance can reduce the number of full-car test. In this research, the robust design of an airbag system considering the frontal crash is suggested to predict the more reliable responses. On the contrary, most existing researches do not consider the uncertainties. The uncertainties treated in this research are the tolerances of the vent hole, the time to fire and the length of a strap in airbag and the tolerance of the load limiter load in seat belt. The Taguchi method is utilized to determine the robust optimum of each parameter

  • Green frame is combined by structural steel and reinforcements of Green column and beam and unified by cast-in-place concrete. However, when upper reinforcements penetrate structural steel hole, the execution is difficult due to interference of joint and a rib of deformed reinforcements. Therefore, the objective of this study is to propose the reinforcement tools to improve productivity of precast structure connection construction. The reinforcement tools proposed in this study can be helpful to improve constructability, safety, duration, and cost comparing with conventional reinforcement method since unskilled workers can deal with reinforcements easily.
