The effects of construction related costs on the optimization of steel frames

  • This paper presents a computational study that explores the design of rigid steel frames by considering construction related costs. More specifically, two different aspects are investigated in this study focusing on the effects of (a) reducing the number of labor intensive rigid connections within a frame of given geometric layout, and (b) reducing the number of different member section types used in the frame. A genetic algorithm based optimization framework searches design space for these objectives. Unlike some studies that express connection cost as a factor of the entire frame weight, here connections and their associated cost factors are explicitly represented at the member level to evaluate the cost of connections associated with each beam. In addition, because variety in member section types can drive up construction related costs, its effects are evaluated implicitly by generating curves that show the trade off between cost and different numbers of section types used within the frame. Our results show that designs in which all connections are considered to be rigid can be excessively conservative: rigid connections can often be eliminated without any appreciable increase in frame weight, resulting in a reduction in overall cost. Eliminating additional rigid connections leads to further reductions in cost, even as frame weight increases, up to a certain point. These complex relationships between overall cost, rigid connections, and member section types are presented for a representative five-story steel frame.

  • Purpose - This study attempts to examine the underlying dimensions of service quality (tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy) for low-cost carriers. It subsequently seeks to determine the effect of the relationships of the dimensions of service quality, airline image, and behavioral intentions on airline services to provide adequate basic information and attributes for developing differentiated and competitive service marketing strategies. Research design, data, and methodology - The survey for this study was conducted on patrons with low-cost carrier boarding experiences in districts near universities and central businesses of Seoul and Busan from 5/10/2012 to 16/10/2012. Out of 346 questionnaires, 20 questionnaires with missing data and insincere answers were excluded for this study. Collected data were processed using SPSS 18.0, and the hypothesis was verified by analyzing the structural equation model with Lisrel 8.54. First, the frequency analysis was conducted to identify universal characteristics. Second, the exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis were conducted to identify the accuracy of the variable measurements of the construct. Third, to assess uni-dimensionality and reliability, confirmatory factor analysis was conducted. Finally, to verify the adequacy of the research model and research hypothesis, the structural model was employed. Results - The results revealed that the factors, "tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy" were shown to be the most important dimensions of service quality for the airline image of the low-cost carrier which was consistent with previous studies. Therefore, it is fair to suggest that these verified factors are crucial attributes for the brand image of low-cost carriers. Second, as reliability and responsiveness were shown to be the most important factors for behavioral intentions, it is viable to suggest that these two attributes are crucial for the sales value of low-cost carriers. Further, it was found that the brand image of low-cost carriers was closely related to behavioral intentions. Therefore, in order to ensure the competitiveness and loyalty of patrons, the airline image value is a crucial attribute. Conclusions - The result of this study established that service quality is the most important attribute for marketing to ensure competitiveness, and intensive and differentiated service marketing play a crucial role in creating profits for low-cost carrier companies. First, as tangibility is found to be the most crucial factor in ensuring service quality, quality control and maintenance of medium and small carriers must be provided to ensure reliability, as they are the main attributes of low-cost carriers. Second, in order to promote positive behavioral intentions, it is essential to enhance the value of airline image. Third, in order to ensure competitiveness, it is imperative to carry out intensive and differentiated service marketing. Therefore, to promote the image of low-cost carriers and enhance behavioral intentions, the level of service quality must be secured by developing appropriate service improvement programs.

An Overview of Structural and Aesthetic Developments in Tall Buildings Using Exterior Bracing and Diagrid Systems

  • There is much architectural and engineering literature which discusses the virtues of exterior bracing and diagrid systems in regards to sustainability - two systems which generally reduce building materials, enhance structural performance, and decrease overall construction cost. By surveying past, present as well as possible future towers, this paper examines another attribute of these structural systems - the blend of structural functionality and aesthetics. Given the external nature of these structural systems, diagrids and exterior bracings can visually communicate the inherent structural logic of a building while also serving as a medium for artistic effect. Viewed in this light, the visual appeal of these systems can be enhanced to give a tower a more distinct urban identity. This entails the creation of structural elements that are aesthetically pleasing, geometrically coherent and that demonstrate dexterity of application in regards to a building's composition, while also respecting the laws of physics and mechanics. In this fashion, an artistic approach can exhibit structural systems as not just purely rational features that enable the construction of tall buildings, but as important visual components that afford opportunities for creative expression. This paper, therefore, synthesizes the concepts of structural performance and creative artistry to facilitate a better understanding of the aesthetic developments in skyscrapers worldwide.

코스트 중요항목 분석을 통한 공사비 예측모델 연구 (Development of Construction Cost Model through the Analysis of Critical Work Items)

  • 건설공사에서 공사비 계획 및 관리를 위한 코스트 모델은 공사입찰$\cdot$계약단계에서 도급공사비 결정에 중요한 기능을 담당할 뿐만 아니라 건설사업 수행 전 단계에 걸쳐 건설공사에 소요될 비용을 추적, 관리하여 주어진 예산범위 내에서 최적의 목적물을 설계 시공하여 궁극적으로 발주자의 투자비용에 대한 가치를 극대화하고 비용관리업무의 적정성을 도모하는 기능을 담당하고 있다. 그동안 내역입찰방식을 널리 채택하고 있는 건설공사에서 내역서는 공사비 예측 및 계획 등 공사관리에 있어서 중요한 수단으로 활용하여 왔으나, 현행 내역모델은 공사비의 예측 및 비용관리 측면에서 지나치게 상세하며, 공사계획 및 관리 업무와 연계시키는데도 한계가 있는 것으로 지적되고 있다. 건설공사를 구성하는 세부 단위작업에 소요되는 비용은 모두 중요한 관리대상이지만, 단위작업의 내용에 따라 비용이 차지하는 비중과 코스트 결정에 미치는 영향력에는 차이가 있다. 이러한 비용결정의 구조적 메커니즘에 착안하여 본 연구에서는 건설공사 비용결정에 중요한 영향을 미치는 작업내용을 규명하여 정확성을 유지하면서 단순 간결한 코스트 예측모델을 제안 및 검증하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다.

Investigation of Field Construction and Economic Efficiency for Steel Plate-Concrete Structures with Application of Parking Building

  • The SC structure can have relatively liberal sectional surfaces, and allows modularization for pre-forming in factories and structural stability. It can be used for the shear walls in the core of general buildings or the structural members for parking buildings. In the future, it could be applied to moving large bus terminals, and widely used for general industrial structures as it can expedite the process compared to other methods. This study examined the applicability of SC structures to the retaining walls of a parking building and reviewed its economic value by comparing its construction term, quality control benefits, and cost compared to RC structures. It was found that SC structures are about 1.6-1.7 times more expensive than RC structures in terms of the cost of fabrication and installation. However, the construction term can be reduced by 27% to save indirect costs for constructors, as well as the cost of removing molds and material loss required when installing RC structures.

Damage controlled optimum seismic design of reinforced concrete framed structures

  • In this paper, an innovative procedure is proposed for the seismic design of reinforced concrete frame structures. The main contribution of the proposed procedure is to minimize the construction cost, considering the uniform damage distribution over the height of structure due to earthquake excitations. As such, this procedure is structured in the framework of an optimization problem, and the initial construction cost is chosen as the objective function. The aim of uniform damage distribution is reached through a design constraint in the optimization problem. Since this aim requires defining allowable degree of damage, a damage pattern based on the concept of global collapse mechanism is presented. To show the efficiency of the proposed procedure, the uniform damage-based optimum seismic design is compared with two other seismic design procedures, which are the strength-based optimum seismic design and the damage-based optimum seismic design. By using the three different seismic design methods, three reinforced concrete frames including six-, nine-, and twelve-story with three bays are designed optimally under a same artificial earthquake. Then, to show the effects of the uniform damage distribution, all three optimized frames are used for seismic damage analysis under a suite of earthquake records. The results show that the uniform damage-based optimum seismic design method renders a design that will suffer less damage under severe earthquakes.

교량구조물의 유지관리를 위한 신뢰성 해석 모델 (Reliability Analysis Models for Maintenance of bridge structures)

  • 최근에 교량구조물의 부식과 노회에 대한 관심이 모아지고 있는 상황에서 부식된 철근의 불확실성은 교량구조물의 안전성 뿐만 아니라 철근콘크리트 부재의 휨강도에 영향을 미치고 있다. 이 논문에서는 이들 불확실성을 고려한 신뢰성 뼈대구조물의 거동과 최적유지관리 시나리오에 대한 검증을 제시하고 있으며, 이들 과정은 부죄된 구조물의 생애주기를 고려한 프로그램에 의해 산출한 값이며 부식구조물의 신뢰성지수 프로파일에 의한 여러 형태의 구조물에 대한 영향을 고려하여 유지관리 효과에 대해 연구 하였다.

  • 최근의 철근콘크리트 교량의 부식과 노후화에 대한 관심이 많다. 콘크리트 안의 부식되어진 철근은 교량구조의 안전뿐만 아니라 철근콘크리트 부재의 휨강도에도 영향을 준다. 기존의 성능평가를 고려한 철근콘크리트속의 부식율 및 휨강도 특성 경제성 분석은 명확하지 많았다. 본 연구의 목적은 철근의 부식감소에 따라서 철근콘크리트 교량의 저항강도기능과 생애주기비용을 연구하고자 한다 따라서 현재의 부식 및 휨강도 산출공식을 제시하고 부식된 철근 콘크리트 교량의 잔여수명을 정확히 평가하고자 한다.

  • In recent years, the deterioration of infrastructures is especially considered. In prestress concrete bridges, one of the important mechanisms of deterioration is the corrosion of the post-tensioned tendon due to environmental agents. In this study, the reliability analysis is performed for a prestress concrete box girder bridge under the pitting corrosion attack with considering the inspection and failure cost. The variation of life-time performance depending on inspection methods have to be quantified. The inspection methods with different accuracy of corrosion detection are presented and applied for model of reliability analysis. The computer program for analysis reliability index of the structure as well as updating process is obtained. An existing bridge is applied for illustrating the influence of inspection cost on the behaviors of structure. Subsequently, the benefit of inspection has shown to predict the time to failure of structure.

Life Cycle Cost 기법에 의한 RC Slab 교량의 절감비용 예측에 관한 연구 (A Case Study on the Reduction Costs Prediction of a Reinforced Concrete Bridge using LCC method)

  • 본 연구는 교량의 경제성 평가를 통해 교량 가설시 유용한 정보를 제공하기 위해, RC Slab교를 대상으로 유지관리수준에 따른 교량의 LCC를 예측하여 절감비용을 예측하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 수행 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. (1) 사례교량 LCC 분석 모델을 제안하였다. (2) 교량의 유지관리수준을 현행과 필요로 구분하고, 분석기간은 80년, 실질할인율은 4.5%로 가정하여 사례대상 교량에 대한 유지관리수준별 LCC를 예측하였다. (3) 사례교량의 LCC 예측결과를 통하여 절감비용을 예측하고 경제적인 절감효과를 파악하였다.
