  • Stiffened coupled shear walls (SCSW) are under axial load resulting from their weight and this axial load affects the behavior of walls because of their excessive height. In this paper, based on the continuum approach, the optimal position of the stiffening beam on the stiffened coupled shear walls is investigated considering the effect of uniformly distributed axial loads. Moreover, the effect of the height of stiffened coupled shear walls on the optimal position of the stiffening beam has been studied with and without considering the axial force effect. A computer program has been developed in MATLAB and numerical examples have been solved to demonstrate the reliability of this method. The effects of the various flexural rigidities of the stiffening beam on the internal forces and the lateral deflection of the structure considering axial force effect have also been investigated.

  • In this paper, the vibration characteristics of the trapezoidally corrugated plate are investigated by the analytical method. The corrugated plate is widely used as the structural elements because of its high stiffness and light weight. Because the corrugated plate is flexible in the corrugation direction and stiff in the transverse direction, it is treated as an equivalent orthotropic plate to analyze the corrugated plate simply. This equivalent plate must include both extensional and flexural effect to obtain the precise solution. The effective extensional and flexural stiffness of the equivalent plate are derived to consider these effects in the analysis. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach, the comparison is made with the previously published results and ANSYS solutions. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

  • Hydraulic directional control valves actuated by solenoid are used to control emergency steering in general or hybrid electric commercial vehicles. In this study, a new lightweight hydraulic directional control valve was designed by flow and structural simulation, and was fabricated; the basic operation, pressure differentials, and inner leakage flow were evaluated experimentally. In the results, the new model showed comparable performance with an existing imported valve. New valve was 80% the weight of the existing valve and had few components. Installing this valve on a truck body is easier because of its compactness and small size.

  • This study was performed for application of Structural Health Monitoring system of Jamsil Lotte World Tower. Axial stresses of mega column and core wall are measured in the past 29 months for axial stress monitoring and evaluating predicted self weight. We use the midas gen program(FEM analysis program) with construction stage analysis mode to predict axial stress. 8 mega column axial stressmeters are installed at 21st floor and 4 core wall stressmeters are installed at 38th floor. Measurement data was obtained without creep and shrinkage effect.

  • Mechanical components and structures are a major part of complex systems and the conseguences of their failure can be extremely costly. The ultimate goal of design engineers is to optimize these mechanical and structural design from the point of view of cost, reliability, weight, volume, maintainability and safety. An essential requirement of design optimization is to develop mathematical models for reliability at design stage. This paper is to minimize the cost of resources subject to the constraint that the reliability of the system must meet a specified level. The lagrange multiplier method is used to optimize the lognormal stress-lognormal strength problem. This optimization problem can be reduced to a search problem in one variable. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the optimization problem.

  • Conducting poly-N-isopropylacrylamide-N-vinyl carbazole (PNI-nvc) copolymers were synthesized via in situ deposition technique by dissolving different weight percentages of N-vinyl carbazole (10, 20, 30, and 40%). The structural morphology and FT-IR studies support the interaction between PNI and N-vinyl carbazole. The temperaturedependent DC conductivity of PNI-nvc was studied within the range of 300 ${\leq}\;T\;{\leq}$ 500 K, presenting evidence for the transport properties of PNI-nvc. The DC conductivity of PNI-nvc copolymers signifies the future development of new nanocopolymers that acts as a multifunctional material.

  • Structure and Properties of sericinjam sericin extracted was investigated using SDS-PAGE electrophoresis, UV, CD, and DSC. The molecular weight and its distribution of sericinjam sericin showed broad tailing pattern. Circular dichlroism spectra showed that the structure of sericinjam sericin in solution was different with domestic one. However, differential thermal calorimetric properties are similar to each other.

  • The CFRP composite has unique properties that offer high strength and stiffness, even though it has light weight. Therefore it can be used in many industrial applications. When mechanical fasteners are used for joining composites, high stress concentrations appear near the edge of holes prepared for accommodating structural bolts and rivets. This presence of high stress concentrations can be a source of damage. The aim of this work is to evaluate fracture behavior and patterns of plain woven CFRP with circular hole and repairing patch element. The maximum strength and pattern for the plain woven carbon composite specimen with the repaired circular hole were examined. From the results, we show that repairing of the CFRP composite specimen with ($\pi$) 3~5 mm of circular hole diameter results in load rising effect and the repairing is more effective as bigger hole specimen.

  • This paper presents a new signature verification technique that not only maximally allows variations in signatures of each person, but also discriminates effectively forgeries from true signatures. The signature verification system is designed to detect unstable portions in signatures of same person, and to give large weight on the portion that is difficult to imitate and plays an important role in signature verification. In registration mode, the system extracts subpatterns from training samples and analizes their consistency and singularity by calculating the variance and complexity of this portion. In verification mode, the system verifies a input signature by comparing corresponding subpatterns with the weights of reference subpatterns.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop Deterioration Diagnosis System for the Reinforced Concrete Structure which can be used preliminary in determining the factors causing deterioration by simple inspection and mapping of the indicators of deterioration. Total 29 items compromising material, structural and constructional factors causing deterioration were considered in this system. Also the indicators of deterioration were subdivided into 54 items such as concrete crack pattern and steel corrosion etc. Each indicator of deterioration was quantatified by allocating and giving grade to each item which has extra weight according to its conscquence. Satisfactory results were obtatined by applying this Diagnosis system to the indicators of deterioration in ref. [3]. Further research was required on the indicators of deterioration in construction site to enhance the field applicability of this system.
