Edaravone, a synthetic-free radical scavenger, has been reported to reduce ischemia-reperfusion-induced renal injury by improving tubular cell function, and lowering serum creatinine and renal vascular resistance. The present study investigated the effect of edaravone in diabetes mellitus-induced nephropathy in rats. A single administration of streptozotocin (STZ, 55 mg/kg, i .p.) was employed to induce diabetes mellitus in rats. The STZ-administered diabetic rats were allowed for 10 weeks to develop nephropathy. Mean body weight, lipid alteration, renal functional and histopathology were analysed. Diabetic rats developed nephropathy as evidenced by a significant increase in serum creatinine and urea, and marked renal histopathological abnormalities like glomerulosclerosis and tubular cell degeneration. The kidney weight to body weight ratio was increased. Moreover, diabetic rats showed lipid alteration as evidenced by a significant increase in serum triglycerides and decrease in serum high-density lipoproteins. Edaravone (10 mg/kg, i .p., last 4-weeks) treatment markedly prevented the development of nephropathy in diabetic rats by reducing serum creatinine and urea and preventing renal structural abnormalities. In addition, its treatment, without significantly altering the elevated glucose level in diabetic rats, prevented diabetes mellitus-induced lipid alteration by reducing serum triglycerides and increasing serum high-density lipoproteins. Interestingly, the renoprotective effect of edaravone was comparable to that of lisinopril (5 mg/kg, p.o, 4 weeks, standard drug). Edaravone prevented renal structural and functional abnormalities and lipid alteration associated with experimental diabetes mellitus. Edaravone has a potential to prevent nephropathy without showing an anti-diabetic action, implicating its direct renoprotection in diabetic rats.
It is essential to develop a light-weight, high-performance structure for the deployable reflector antenna, which is the payload of a reconnaissance satellite, considering launch and orbital operation performance. Among them, the composite main reflector is a key component that constitutes a deployable reflector antenna. In particular, the development of a high-performance main reflector is required to acquire high-quality satellite images after agile attitude control maneuvers during satellite missions. To develop main reflector, the initial design of the main reflector was confirmed considering the structural performance according to the laminate stacking design and material properties of the composite main reflector that constitutes the deployable reflector antenna. Based on the initial design, four types of composite main reflectors were manufactured with the variable for manufacturing process. As variables for manufacturing process, the curing process of the composite structure, the application of adhesive film between the carbon fiber composite sheet and the honeycomb core, and the venting path inside the sandwich composite were selected. After manufacture main reflector, weight measurement, non-destructive testing(NDT), surface error measurement, and modal test were performed on the four types of main reflectors produced. By selecting a manufacturing process that does not apply adhesive film and includes venting path, for a composite main reflector with light weight and structural performance, we developed and verified a main reflector that can be applied to the SAR(Synthetic Aperture Rader) satellite.

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of concrete mixtures in which fine(S) and coarse(G) aggregate was fully replaced with fly ash(FA). And flowability reduction problem in a large amount of fly ash concrete settled addition water($W_f$) in concrete mixture. In the test, water-cement ratio($W_c/C$) was 0.35, 0.45, and water-fly ash ratio($W_f/FA$) was 0.35, 0.45. The fly ash replacement is two different method of P and Q. The P method is mix property that the fly ash and addition water($W_f$) weight is equal to the aggregate weight [ $FA+W_f$ = G (or S)]. The Q method is mix property that fly ash is equal to aggregate weight, and added addition water($W_f$) [$FA+W_f$ > G (or S)]. Test were performed for properties of fresh concrete and compressive strength were determined at 3, 7, 28 and 91 days. The result, compressive strength was improvement that $W_c/C=0.35$, $W_f/FA=0.35$ and fine aggregate replacement in P method series than others. The flowability at Q method was improvement result than P method, but compressive strength was not. Test results indicate significant improvement in the strength properties and flowability of plain concrete by the inclusion of fly ash as fully replacement of fine and coarse aggregate, and can be effectively the fly ash replacement method.

In this paper, we present the analytical study results pertaining to the buckling of the orthotropic plates and local buckling of structural compression members composed of orthotropic plate components. Fiber reinforced polymeric plastic (FRP) materials, have many advantages over conventional structural materials such as steel and concrete. The advantages of the FRP materials are high specific strength and stiffness, high corrosion resistance, right weight, etc. Among the various manufacturing methods, pultrusion process is one of the best choices for the mass production of structural plastic members. Since the major reinforcing fibers are placed along the axial direction of the member, this material is usually considered as an orthotropic (tranversely isotropic, more specifically) material. However, pultruded fiber reinforced plastic structural members have low modulus of elasticity and are composed of orthotropic thin plate components the members are prone to buckle. Therefore, stability is an important issue in the design of the pultruded FRP structural members. In this paper, the buckling of orthotropic plates and the local buckling of pultruded FRP structural members are investigated by following the previous research results and the local buckling strength of the member produced in the domestic manufacturer is found.

Most of the structure of the real world is influenced under dynamic loads. However, when structure analysis and the structural optimization is performed, it is assumed that the static load acts on structure. When considering the actual load of dynamic loads in order to take into account a variety of loads, computational resources and time becomes a big burden in terms of cost. However, considering only the simple static load condition is not preferable for structural safety. For this reason, a lot of studies have been conducted trying to compensate this trouble by applying weight factor or replacing dynamic load with the equivalent static load. In this study, structural optimization techniques for structures under dynamic loads is proposed by applying the equivalent static load. From previous study, after determining the positions of equivalent static load based on primary degrees of freedom, the equivalent static load is calculated through the optimization process. In this process, the equivalent static load optimization of previous research is complemented by adding constraints to avoid excessively large load extraction. In numerical examples, dynamic load is applied to the truss structure and the plate. Then, the reliability of the proposed optimization technique is verified by carrying out size optimization with the equivalent static load.

This paper presents the resizing method of columns and beams that considers column-to-beam strength ratios to simultaneously control the initial stiffness and ductility of steel moment frames. The proposed method minimizes the top-floor displacement of a structure while satisfying the constraint conditions with respect to the total structural weight and column-to-beam strength ratios. The design variable considered in this method is the sectional area of structural members, and the sequential quadratic programming(SQP) technique is used to obtain optimal results from the problem formulation. The unit load method is applied to determine the displacement participation factor of each member for the top floor lateral displacement; based on this, the sectional area of each member undergoes a resizing process to minimize the top-floor lateral displacement. Resizing members by using the displacement participation factor of each member leads to increasing the initial stiffness of the structure. Additionally, the proposed method enables the ductility control of a structure by adjusting the column-to-beam strength ratio. The applicability of the proposed optimal drift design method is validated by applying it to the steel moment frame example. As a result, it is confirmed that the initial stiffness and ductility could be controlled by the proposed method without the repetitive structural analysis and the increment of structural weights.

Offshore jacket structures generally comprise steel members, and the safety standard for jacket structures typically focuses on the steel components. However, large amounts of concrete grouting is filled in the legs of the Gageocho jacket structure to aid in the recovery from typhoon damage. This paper proposes a safe and lightweight design for the Gageocho ocean research station comprising steel members instead of large amounts of concrete reinforcement in the legs. Based on the actual design, the structural members are grouped according to their functional roles, and the inner diameter of the cross-section in each design group is defined as a design variable. Structural optimization is carried out using a genetic algorithm to minimize the total weight of the structure. To satisfy the conservative safety standards in the offshore field, both the maximum stress and the unity check criteria are considered as design constraints during optimization. For enhanced safety confidence, extreme environmental conditions are assumed. The maximum marine attachment thickness and the section erosion in the splash zone are applied. Additionally, the design load is defined as the force induced by extreme waves, winds, and currents aligned in the same direction. All the loading directions surrounding the structure are considered to design the structure in a balanced and safe manner. As a result, compared with the current structure, the proposed structure features a 45% lighter design, satisfying the strict offshore safety criteria.

The rotor blade is an important component of a tidal stream turbine and is affected by a large thrust force and load due to the high density of seawater. Therefore, the performance must be secured through the geometrical and structural design of the blade and the blade structural safety to which the composite material is applied. In this study, a 1 MW class large turbine blade was designed using the blade element momentum (BEM) theory. GFRP is a fiber-reinforced plastic used for turbine blade materials. A sandwich structure was applied with CFRP to lay-up the blade cross-section. In addition, to evaluate structural safety according to flow variations, static load analysis within the linear elasticity range was performed using the fluid-structure interactive (FSI) method. Structural safety was evaluated by analyzing tip deflection, strain, and failure index of the blade due to bending moment. As a result, Model-B was able to reduce blade tip deflection and weight. In addition, safety could be secured by indicating that the failure index, inverse reserve factor (IRF), was 1 or less in all load ranges excluding 3.0*Vr of Model-A. In the future, structural safety will be evaluated by applying various failure theories and redesigning the laminated pattern as well as the change of blade material.

International oil prices are expected to increase from $85 a barrel this year to up to $100 a barrel in the second half of the year; this is likely to increase orders for offshore plants in the global market. One main characteristic of offshore plants is that a large helideck is located on the top side, and aluminum alloys are used as the basic material of the structure for weight reduction and corrosion resistance. Shipowners are increasing the size of helicopters to quickly evacuate lives in the event of an emergency, and the safety use load of devices that can stably secure helicopters to the deck is also required to increase. Owing to the nature of the aluminum material, the structural strength caused by welding is greatly reduced; therefore, the fixing device must be designed by embedding it in the deck and fixing it with bolts. In this study, a model applying aluminum alloy 6082-T6 was developed to develop a helicopter fastening device that can be used for large helidecks (diameter = 28 m). The developed item was verified through nonlinear structural strength calculation to satisfy the load used for the actual fastening condition. The load condition with a 45° showed a lower ultimate strength than the 90° case owing to local plastic collapse. The nonlinear structural collapse behavior showed a result similar to that of the experimental test. The main contents derived from this study are considered to be reference materials when evaluating the structural strength of similar aluminum equipment.

In this study, a determination method of structural member section based on Nonlinear behaviors of steel cable-stayed bridges and the Harmony Search algorithm was presented. The Harmony Search algorithm determines the structural member section of cable-stayed bridges by repeating the process of setting the initial value, initializing the harmony memory, configuring the new harmony memory, and updating the harmony memory to search for the optimal value. The nonlinear initial shape analysis of a three-dimensional steel cable-stayed bridge was performed with the cross-section of the main member selected by the Harmony Search algorithm, and the optimal cross-section of the main members of the cable-stayed bridge, such as pylons, girders, cross-beams, and cables, reflecting the complex behavior characteristics and the nonlinearity of each member was determined in consideration of the initial tension and shape. The total weight was used as the objective function for determining the cross-section of the main member of the cable-stayed bridges, and the load resistance ability and serviceability based on the ultimate state design method were used as the restraint conditions. The width and height ratio of the girder and cross-section were considered additional restraint conditions. The optimal sections of the main members were made possible to be determined by considering the geometry and material nonlinearity of the pylons, girders, and cross-sections and the nonlinearity of the cable members. As a result of determining the optimal cross-section, it was confirmed that the proposed analysis method can determine the optimal cross-section according to the various constraint conditions of the cable-stayed bridge, and the structural member section of the cable-stayed bridge considering the nonlinearity can be determined through the Harmony Search algorithm.
