  • A series of novel cyclopropyl nucleosides was synthesized using the highly stereoselective Simmons-Smith reaction starting from 1,2:5,6-di-Ο-isopropylidene-D-mannitol. The structural assignments of these nucleosides were determined by NMR studies and X-ray crystallography. All the synthesized nucleosides were assayed against several viruses.

  • ABA-type(or AB) block copolymers composed of poly(${\gamma}$-alkyl L-glutamate) (PALG)[or poly(L-leucine)] as the A component and polyether[or poly (N-isopropy1 acrylamide) as the B component were synthesized by polymerization of (${\gamma}$-alkyl L-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride initiated by primary amined located at both(or one) ends of the polymer chains. Structural studies of the block copolymers were performed in the solution and solid state. Also, artificial skin, drug delivery system of the block copolymers and cell attachment onto the copolymer were carried out for biomedical applications.

  • Naturally occurring sugar mimics with a nitrogen in the ring are classified into five structural classes: polyhydroxylated pyrrolidines, piperidines, indolizidines. pyrrolizidine, and nortropanes. Glycosidase are involved in a wide range of important biological processes, such as intestinal digestion, post-translational processing of glycoproteins and the lysosomal catabolism of glycoconjugate. The realization that alkaloidal sugar mimics might have enormous therapeutic potential in many diseases such as viral infection, cancer and diabetes has led to increasing interest and demand for these compounds. • In an effort to search for the chemically and enzymatically stable carbonucleoside. we designed [1'-fluoro-2', 2'-bis-(hydroxymethyl) cyclopropyl methyl] purines. The underlying concept for our design is to seek relatively conformationally-locked compound with minimal structural disturbance from acyclic carbonucleoside such as acyclovir or penciclovir. To meet such a requirement. we need to introduce cyclopropane and fluorine moiety. (omitted)

  • Seven 2, 3-diphenyl-5-methoxyindole derivatives were synthesized. The effect of structural variation of these molecules on biological activities was examined. None of the tested compounds was found to be toxic up 5 gm/Kg body weight. Four compounds demonstrated smooth muscle relaxant effects and one showed a persistent hypotensive effect. Only the parent compound, 2, 3-diphenyl-5-methoxyindole, showed a significant analgesic effect.

  • The vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) method, where the "liquid" catalytic droplets collecting atoms from vapor precursors build the solid crystal layers via supersaturation, is a ubiquitous technique to synthesize 1-dimensional nanoscale materials. However, the lack of fundamental understanding of chemical information governing the process inhibits the rational route to the structural programming. By combining the in situ or operando IR spectroscopy with post-growth high resolution electron microscopy, we show the strong correlation between the surface chemical species concentration and nanowire structures. More specifically, the critical role of surface adsorbed hydrogen, generated from the decomposition of Si2H6 precursor on the interplay between nanowire / kinking and the defect propagation is demonstrated. Our results show that adsorbed hydrogen atoms are responsible for selecting -oriented growth and indicate that a twin boundary imparts structural coherence. The twin boundary, only continuous at / kinks, reduces the symmetry of the trijunction and limits the number of degenerate directions available to the nanowire. These findings constitute a general approach for rationally engineering kinking superstructures and also provide important insight into the role of surface chemical bonding during VLS synthesis.

  • In this work, the synthetic approaches for a series of aminopyrimiclinylmethanone derivatives 1a-i, which versatile biological activities such as antibacterial and anticancer activities are expected from a structural point of view, were described. Nicotinic acid was converted to (2-methylsulfonylpyrimidin-4-yl) (pyridin-3-yl)methanone, a key intermediate, which was reacted with nucleophiles to yield the desired aminopyrimidinylmethanone derivatives 1a-i bearing various substituents.

  • In this work, we report on the synthesis of the GaN powders from gallium oxide hydroxide (GaOOH) powders and on the structural and optical properties of them. Simple heat treatment of GaOOH in the flow of $NH_3$ gas leads to the formation of submicron hexagonal GaN powders even at the low reaction temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. XRD measurements show that the powders obtained are the single phase GaN. EDS, FTIR, and PL measurements indicate the oxygen-associated characteristics. It is shown from the low temperature PL measurement on GaN powders synthesized at $1000^{\circ}C$ that the shallow donor-acceptor recombination induced emission is more intense than the near band-edge excitonic emission.

  • Fusion and characterization of bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether based thermosetting polymer mortars containing an epoxy resin, Fly ash and Rock sand are presented here for the Experimental study. The specimens have been prepared by means of an innovative process, in mild conditions, of commercial epoxy resin, Fly ash and Rock sand based paste. In this way, thermosetting based hybrid mortars characterized by a different content of normalized Fly ash and Rock sand by a homogeneous dispersion of the resin have been obtained. Once hardened, these new composite materials show improved compressive strength and toughness in respect to both the Fly ash and the Rock sand pastes since the Resin provides a more cohesive microstructure, with a reduced amount of micro cracks. The micro structural characterization allows pointing out the presence of an Interfacial Transition Zone similar to that observed in cement based mortars. A correlation between micro-structural features and mechanical properties of the mortar has also been studied.

  • This paper presents a robust vibration control methodology of smart structural systems. The governing equations and associated boundary conditions are derived by Hamilton's principle. A robust controller is designed using a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach to the multiobjective synthesis. The design objectives are to achieve a mix of H$\sub$$\infty$/ performance and H$_2$ performance satisfying constraints on the closed-loop pole locations in the face of model uncertainties. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of LMI approach in damping out the multiple modes of vibration of the piezo/beam system.
