The Strouhal number is an important nondimensional number which is explanatory of aerodynamic instability phenomena. It takes on the different characteristic constant value depending upon the cross-sectional shape of the body being enveloped by the flow. A number of investigations into this subject, especially on the drag test, surface pressure test and hot-wire test, have been carried out under the fixed state of the body in the past. However, almost no investigations concerning the determination of the St on wind-induced vibration of the body have been reported in the past even though the aerodynamic behavior of the body is very important because the construction of wind-sensitive structures is recently on the sharp increase. Based on a series of wind tunnel tests, this paper addresses a new method to determine the Strouhal number of rectangular cylinder in the uniform flow. The central idea of the proposed method is that the Strouhal number can be obtained directly by the aerodynamic behaviors of the body through wind-induced vibration test. The validity of proposed method is evaluated by comparing with the results obtained by previous studies in three B/Ds at attack angle $0^{\circ}$ and a square cylinder with various attack angles. The values and trends of the proposed Strouhal numbers are in good agreements with values of previous studies. And also, the Strouhal numbers of B/D=1.5 and 2.0 with various attack angles are obtained by the proposed method and verified by other method. This proposed method is as good as any other previous methods to obtain the Strouhal number.
Vortex-shedding flows past a circular cylinder for 200≤ Re ≤ 5000 are numerically simulated with the PowerCFD code, using a finite volume method and an unstructured grid system, developed by the author. The simulation is peformed by solving the unsteady 2-D Wavier-Stokes equations with both no model and turbulence model. The resulting Reynolds number dependence of the Strouhal number and of the drag and lift coefficients is compared with both experiments and previous numerical results. It is found that, in the range of 200≤ Re ≤ 5000 the calculation method with a turbulence model is capable of producing reasonably more accurate results than that with no model for the main practically relevant parameters such as Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficients.

천공 요소는 유체 기계의 흡기계나 배기계의 소음기에 널리 사용되고 있으며, 스치는 유동 (grazing flow)과 통과하는 유동 (cross flow)을 접하게 된다. 천공 요소의 임피던스는 소음기의 음향학적인 특성에 영향을 미치게 된다 본 연구에서는 유동이 임피던스에 미치는 영향을 고려하기 위하여, 실험을 통하여 얻은 임피던스 값을 유동 레지스턴스 (flow resistance)와 종단 보정 비 (end correction ratio)로 나타내고, 스트롤 수 (Strouhal number)로 무차원 화하여 분석하였다 이를 난류를 고려하여 제안된 선행 임피던스 모델들과 비교하여 난류가 미치는 영향을 분석하였다.
A numerical study is conducted on the flow characteristics of a rectangular cylinder (chord-to-width ratio C/W = 2 - 10) mounted close to a rigid wall at gap-to-width ratios G/W = 0.25 - 6.25. The effects of G/W and C/W on the Strouhal number, vortex structure, and time-mean drag and lift forces are examined. The results reveal that both G/W and C/W have strong influences on vortex structure, which significantly affects the forces on the cylinder. An increase in G/W leads to four different flow regimes, namely no vortex street flow (G/W < 0.75), single-row vortex street flow ($0.75{\leq}G/W{\leq}1.25$), inverted two-row vortex street flow ($1.25<G/W{\leq}2.5$), and two-row vortex street flow (G/W > 2.5). Both Strouhal number and time-mean drag are more sensitive to C/W than to G/W. For a given G/W, Strouhal number grows with C/W while time-mean drag decays with C/W, the growth and decay being large between C/W = 2 and 4. The time-mean drag is largest in the single-row vortex street regime, contributed by a large pressure on the front surface, regardless of C/W. A higher C/W, in general, leads to a higher time-mean lift. The maximum time-mean lift occurs for C/W = 10 at G/W = 0.75, while the minimum time-mean lift appears for C/W = 2 at the same G/W. The impact of C/W on the time-mean lift is more substantial in single-row vortex regime. The effect of G/W on the time-mean lift is larger at a larger C/W.
In this paper, the near wake of stationary and transversely oscillating square section cylinders with different corner radii are studied by numerical method to investigate the influence of corner radius. Six models R/D=0,0.1,0.2,0.3,0.4,0.5 (R is the corner radius and D is the characteristic dimension of the body) were studied. It was found that the corner radius of square cylinder significantly influences the flow features around the body both in stationary and oscillating conditions. Results indicate that, as R/D ratio increases, the Strouhal number increases and the separation point decrease for the stationary and oscillating cases.

Wake-induced aerodynamics of yawed circular cylinders with smooth and grooved surfaces in a tandem arrangement was studied. This pair of cylinders represent sections of stay-cables with smooth surfaces and high-voltage power conductors with grooved surfaces that are vulnerable to flow-induced structural failure. The study provides some insight for a better understanding of wake-induced loads and galloping problem of bundled cables. All experiments in this study were conducted using a pair of stationary section models of circular cylinders in a wind tunnel subjected to uniform and smooth flow. The aerodynamic force coefficients and vortex-shedding frequency of the downstream model were extracted from the surface pressure distribution. For measurement, polished aluminum tubes were used as smooth cables; and hollow tubes with a helically grooved surface were used as power conductors. The aerodynamic properties of the downstream model were captured at wind speeds of about 6-23 m/s (Reynolds number of 5×104 to 2.67×105 for smooth cable and 2×104 to 1.01×105 for grooved cable) and yaw angles ranging from 0° to 45° while the upstream model was fixed at the various spacing between the two model cylinders. The results showed that the Strouhal number of yawed cable is less than the non-yawed case at a given Reynolds number, and its value is smaller than the Strouhal number of a single cable. Additionally, compared to the single smooth cable, it was observed that there was a reduction of drag coefficient of the downstream model, but no change in a drag coefficient of the downstream grooved case in the range of Reynolds number in this study.

The passive control by vertical splitter plate of fluid force acting on a square prism near a plane wall was studied by measuring of fluid force on the prism and by visualization of the flow field using PIV. The hight of the splitter plate was 10% of the square width. The experimental parameters were the attaching position of vertical splitter plate and the space ratios G/B to the prism height. Time variation of vorticity was most remarkable at 3.0B(B: prism height) position toward wake direction from the center of the prism. The point of inflection of average lift coefficient and Strouhal number on the prism were represented at the space ratio G/B=0.4~0.6 for the prism having vertical splitter plate. The drag of the prism was reduced average 5.0% with the space ratios by attaching the vertical splitter plate at the upper and rear corner on the prism. In this case, the size of the separated region on the upside of the prism was smaller than that of prism having no the splitter plate.
In heavy nuclear power plant, high energy through main steam line is provided to turbine that generate the electric power. Since plant had generated power, high noise has been occurred. Noise make equipments and work environment worse. For finding out the location and the cause of making noise, noise was measured along main steam line at open/close test of Main Steam Isolation Valve (MSIV hereafter). As the result, it was identified that the vortex shedding in the cavity of MSIV is main noise source. The profile change of MSIV seat ring was proposed as the method of noise reduction. After filletting MSIV seat ring, the noise level reduced $10{\sim}20dB$ compared before the change of profile.
When bridges are constructed with lower heights from the ground, the formed channel between the deck and the ground will inevitably hinder or accelerate the air flow. This in turn will have an impact on the aerodynamic forces on the deck, which may result in unexpected wind-induced responses of bridges. This phenomenon can be referred to "ground effects." So far, no systematic studies into ground effects on the wind-induced responses of closed box girders have been performed. In this paper, wind tunnel tests have been adopted to study the ground effects on the aerodynamic force coefficients and the wind-induced responses of a closed box girder. In correlation with the heights from the ground in two ground roughness, the aerodynamic force coefficients, the Strouhal number ($S_t$), the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) lock-in phenomena over a range of wind velocities, the VIV maximum amplitudes, the system torsional damping ratio, the flutter derivatives, the critical flutter wind speeds and their variation laws correlated with the heights from the ground of a closed box girder have been presented through wind tunnel tests. The outcomes show that the ground effects make the vortex-induced phenomena occur in advance and adversely affect the flutter stability.
