  • The Characteristics of the flowfield through tube banks with in-line and staggered arrangements were investigated by PIV. Strouhal numbers, velocity vectors and velocity profiles around the cylinders with in-line and staggered arrangements were observed at the pitch ratio Pt/D=2.0 and Reynolds number of Re=$Re=4.0{\times}10^3$. As the results The flow patterns through tube banks were almost a straight line in case of the in-line arrangement while it was almost 八 type in case of the staggered arrangement in the direction of the wake. The average velocity in the rear region of the tube banks with the staggered arrangement was far smaller than that with the in-line arrangement. The Strouhal number in the last rank was far smaller than that in the front ranks in both of the in-line and staggered arrangements. The wake of each cylinder changed with time and with the position of the cylinder.

  • The effect of thermal stratification on the stratified flow past a circular cylinder was examined in a wind tunnel. Turbulent intensities, the rms values of temperature and turbulent convective heat flux as well as the velocity and temperature profiles in the cylinder wake with a strong thermal gradient of $200^{\circ}C/m$ were measured by using a hot-wire and cold-wire combination probe. It is found that the temperature field affects as an active contaminant, so that the vertical growth of vortical structure is suppressed and the strouhal number decreases with increasing the extent of stratification. And also, the wake structure can not sustain their symmetricity about the wake centerline and vertical turbulent motion dissipates faster than that of the neutral case when such a strong thermal gradient is superimposed. It is evident that the turbulent mixing in the upper half section is stronger than that of the lower of the wake in a stably stratified flow because the turbulent intensities and convective heat flux in the upper half section are larger than those of the lower half of the wake.

  • The characteristics of the flowfields around two circular cylinders in various arrangements were investigated by PIV. In tandem arrangement, the Strouhal numbers measured in the rear region of the cylinder of wake side were decreased with the space ratios, the flow between two cylinders was almost stagnated and the closer to upstream cylinder, the larger the width of the stagnated region was. The direction of vortex between two cylinders was opposed each other with the small difference(${\alpha}$=${\pm}1.0^{\circ}$) of the attack angle . In side by side arrangement, the flow velocity between two circular cylinders were increased with the space ratios.

  • Phase averaged velocity fields in the near wake region behind a square cylinder have been (successfully) obtained using randomly sampled PIV data sets. The Reynolds number based on the flow velocity and the vertex height was 3,900. To identify the phase information, we examined the magnitude of circulation and the center of peak vorticity. The center of vorticity was estimated from lowpass filtered vorticity contours (LES decomposition) adopting a sub-pixel searching algirithm. Due to the sinusoidal nature of firculation which is closely related to the instantaneous vorticity, the location of peak voticity fits well with a sine curve of the circulation magnitude. Conditionally-averaged velocity fields represent the barman vortex shedding phenomenon very well within 5 degrees phase uncertainty. The oscillating nature of the separated shear layer and the separation bubble at the top surface are clearly observed. With the hot-wire measurements of Strouhal frequency, we found thats the convection velocity changes its magnitude very rapidly from 25 to 75 percent of the free stream velocity along the streamwise direction when the flow passes by the recirculation region.

  • A numerical solution for heat transfer of pulsating turbulent pipe flow was presented under the condition of fully developed dynamic regime and uniform well heat flux. The k-.epsilon. turbulent model was adopted to describe turbulent characteristics. The results were given at following conditions ; Time-averaged Reynolds number equal to 10000 ; Strouhal number ranged from 0.0005 to 0.05 ; The peak velocity fluctuation varied from 20 to 80 percent of the mean velocity. It was found that the effect of pulsation on local heat transfer rate is greater at downstream than upstream and the heat transfer was increased or decreased according to the pulsating conditions.

  • New dynamic analysis procedures lot the vertically drilled sea water pile are suggested and demonstrated by the typical design Problem. Pile structure submerged in the sea water as well as forces by the ocean waves and tidal currents are modeled and formulated by finite element method. To obtain wave forces for the finite element equation, Airy's wave theory is tested and selected among others. Lateral lifting forces induced by the vortex shedding of current flow is simply based on the harmonic function with the Strouhal frequency and lifting coefficient. Natural frequencies and frequency responses for the pile are calculated by NASTRAN using the results of the formulation. Dynamic displacement and stress results obtained by these procedures are shown to be applicable to predict the dynamic behaviors of the ocean pile by the wave and lifting forces as a preliminary design analysis.

  • A heat exchanger tube array in a heat recovery steam generator is exposed to hot exhaust gas flow that can cause flow induced vibrations, which could damage the heat exchanger tube array. The characteristics of flow induced vibration in the tube array need to be established for the structural safe operation of a heat exchanger. Several studies of the flow induced vibrations of typical heat exchangers have been conducted and the nondimensional PSD (Power Spectral Density) function with the Strouhal number, fD/U, had been derived using an experimental method. The present study examined the results of the previous experimental research on the nondimensional PSD characteristics by CFD analysis and the basis for the application of flow induced vibration to the heat recovery steam generator tube array was determined from the present CFD analysis. The present CFD analysis introduced circular cylinder tube array and calculated using unsteady laminar flow for the tube array. The characteristics of lift and drag fluctuations over the cylinder tube array was investigated. The derived nondimensional lift and drag PSD was compared with the results of the previous experimental research and the characteristics of lift and drag PSD for a circular cylinder tube array was established from the present CFD study.

  • The numerical simulation of flow-filed around a square cylinder near a wall with $\varepsilon$-SST turbulence model is carried out in this study. The newly suggested $\varepsilon$-SST turbulence model that modifies the original SST turbulence model is proved to yield more accurate results than the other 2-equation turbulence models in large separation region around a bluff body. Therefore, $\varepsilon$-SST turbulence model can be effectively applied for predicting the flow-fields with large separation. And it is found that vortex shedding is suppressed below the critical gap height, the Strouhal number is affected by the gap height and the wall boundary layer thickness.

  • Experimental and numerical studies are conducted on the characteristics of flame extinction and edge flame oscillation in counterflow diffusion flames. The characteristics of flame extinction and edge flame oscillation are well described varying burner diameter, separation distance between two burners, global strain rate, and velocity ratio. It is verified numerically and experimentally that radial conduction heat loss significantly contributes to flame extinction and edge flame oscillation at low strain rate flames in zero- and micro-gravity. It is also shown that for appropriately small burner diameters flame extinction modes are grouped into four and these are significantly attributed to excessive radial conduction heat loss. The edge flame oscillation can be characterized well by one curve with Strouhal number and Peclet number.
