  • We studied the source regions of 12 solar energetic particle (SEP) events seen between 2010 August and 2012 January at STEREO-A, B and ACE, when the two STEREO spacecraft were separated by about $180^{\circ}$. All events were associated with strong flares (C1 - X6) and fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs) accompanied by type II radio bursts. We have determined the arrival times of the SEP events at the three spacecraft. EUV waves observed in $195{\AA}$ and $193{\AA}$ channels of STEREO and SDO/AIA are tracked across the Sun and the arrival time of the EUV wave at the photospheric source of open field lines extending to the spacecraft connection points at 2.5 Rsun estimated. We found 7 events with flux enhancements in all spacecraft and 4 in two spacecraft. Most events came from a single source. The results show that magnetic field connections between source regions and the spacecraft play an important role in abrupt flux enhancements. In the most cases, EUV waves at the Sun are associated with a wide longitudinal spread of the SEPs.

  • The longest tunnel has been halted at Daekwanryung by the failure of the host country of the Winter Olympiad in 2014, but modern High-Power TBM will come to Korea to excavate these long tunnels to establish the better horizontal connection between the western and eastern countries to improve the strong powerful logistic strategy of Korean peninsula. Train operation provides a key function of air movements in a long underground tunnel, and heat generation from transit vehicles may account of the most heat release to the ventilation and emergency systems. This paper indicates the optimal fire suppress services and safety provision for the long railway tunnel which is designed twin tunnel with length 22km in Gangwon province of Korea. The design of the fire-fighting systems and emergency were prepared by the operation of the famous long-railway tunnels as well as the severe lessons from the real fires in domestic and overseas experiences. Designers should concentrate the optimal solution for passenger's safety at the emergency state when tunnel fires, train crush accidents, derailment, and etc. The optimal fire-extinguishing facilities for long railway tunnels are presented for better safety of the comfortable operation in this hard rock tunnel of eastern mountains side of Korea. Since year 1900, hard rock tunnel construction has been launched for railway tunnels in Korea, tunnels have been built for various purposes not only for infrastructure tunnels including roadway, railway, subway, and but also for water and power supply, for deposit food, waste, and oils etc. Most favorable railway tunnel system was discussed in details; twin tunnels, distance of cross passage, ventilation systems, for the comfortable train operations in the future.

  • Main objective of this study is to examine the hysteretic behaviors and to evaluate the capacity of precast concrete (PC) large panel structures simulated from the prototype of 15-story building, Two 1/2 scaled precast concrete wall specimens and one monolithic reinforced concrete specimen were designed and tested under the cyclic loading conditions. The main parameter of test specimens in PC large panel structure is the type of details for vertical continuity of vertical steel in horizontal joint. Also the behaviors of PC large panel structures are compared with that of monolithic reinforcement concrete wall structure. From the results, the stiffness and energy dissipation ratio of the precast concrete specimens are shown little bit lower than those of monolithic reinforced concrete specimen. In the PC large panel structures, the specimen connected vertically by welding (strong connection) showed higher strength than that of the specimen connected vertically by joint box. However the failure pattern of the former showed more brittle than that of the latter due to the diagonal compressive failure of wall panels.

  • In the present work a new friction device, with a set of single or double rotational friction flanges and a link element, is described and tested. The mechanism may be applied for the strengthening of existing r/c or steel buildings as well as in new constructed buildings. The device has selectable variable behavior in different levels of displacement and an interlock mechanism that is provided by the link element. The link element may be designed to lock at preselected level of displacement, offering in this way an extra safety reserve against strong earthquakes. A summary of the existing literature about other similar mechanisms is initially presented in this paper. The proposed mechanism is presented and described in details. Laboratory experiments are presented in detail and the resulted response that proves the efficiency of the mechanism at selectable levels of strength capacity is discussed. Drawings of the mechanism attached to a r/c frame with connection details are also included. Finally a dynamic analysis of two r/c frames, with and without the proposed mechanism attached, is performed and the resulted response is given. The main conclusion is that the proposed mechanism is a cheap and efficient devise for the improvement of the performance of new or existing framed buildings to seismic loads.

  • Seoul Metro Line 9 (SML9) will link Gimpo Airport to the Gangnam district opening in May 2009. SML9 has a new model in Korea constructed by metropolitan government and private company and operated by specialized public transportation service provider. SML9 is confronted with tough environment of stagnated public transportation and strong competitor, Olympic city expressway. Consequently SML9 must lead the maximum efficiency by using its material and human resource. Hereupon, I propose renovation plans from 3 viewpoints of operation field of SML9: Rapid-Local combination, close connection with other transportation and direct connecting service into Incheon Air-port Railroad(AREX).

  • Beam-column joints play a significant role in static and dynamic performances of reinforced concrete frame structures. This study contributes a numerical approach of topologically optimal design of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) to retrofit existing beam-column connections with crack patterns. In recent, CFRP is used commonly in the rehabilitation and strengthening of concrete members due to the remarkable properties, such as lightweight, anti-corrosion and simplicity to execute construction. With the target to provide an optimal CFRP configuration to effectively retrofit the beam-column connection under semi-failure situation such as given cracks, extended finite element method (X-FEM) is used by combining with multi-material topology optimization (MTO) as a mechanical description approach for strong discontinuity state to mechanically model cracked structures. The well founded mathematical formulation of topology optimization problem for cracked structures by using multiple materials is described in detail in this study. In addition, moved and regularized Heaviside functions (MRHF), that have the role of a filter in multiple materials case, is also considered. The numerical example results illustrated in two cases of beam-column joints with stationary cracks verify the validity, benefit and supremacy of the proposed method.

  • Research has established a strong connection between a diet rich in antioxidants and a decreased incidence of cardiovascular disease and cancer. These diets prominently feature fruits and vegetables containing high amounts of vitamins A, B, C and E, carotenoids, and minerals. Different processing conditions for these foods can alter their nutrient complement and potency. This study compared the antioxidant properties of a range of processed fruits and vegetables to see which yielded the highest level of antioxidant activity. We used an acetaminophen-induced oxidative stress mouse model to evaluate the antioxidant effects of extracts of processed apple, pear, carrot, cabbage, broccoli, and radish. Our results showed that the administration of these fruits decreased the expression of oxidative stress indicators such as ALT, AST, catalase, superoxide dismutase, GPx, and 8-OHdG. They also significantly protected mice livers from APAP-induced damage, as shown by histological evaluation. Our results have demonstrated the positive effects of processed fruits and vegetables in a mouse model of oxidative stress.

  • The unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) is an effective custom power device that is used at the point of common coupling to protect loads from voltage and current-related PQ issues. Currently, most researchers have studied series unit and parallel unit models and an idealized transformer model. However, the interactions of the series and parallel converters in AC-link are difficult to analyze. This study utilizes an equivalent transformer model to accomplish an electric connection of series and parallel converters in the AC-link and to establishes a precise unified mathematical model of the UPQC. The strong coupling interactions of series and parallel units are analyzed, and they show a remarkable dependence on the excitation impedance of transformers. Afterward, a feed-forward decoupling method based on a unified model that contains the uncertainty components of the load impedance is applied. Thus, this study presents an adaptive method to estimate load impedance. Furthermore, simulation and experimental results verify the accuracy of the proposed modeling and decoupling algorithm.
