Recently, foundations of heavy structures such as bridge abutments have been built on slopes or near the crest of slopes at an increasing rate. Because the bearing capacity of such foundations is considerably lower than the bearing capacity of the same soil on a level ground, deep footings such as piles and caissons are often used. However, the costs of such methods are generally very high. One of the new techniques to overcome the problem is to place reinforcing members such as geosynthetics or metal strips horizontally at some depths beneath the footings. Rational methods of analysis to predict the bearing capacity of footings in reinforced slopes are therefore needed. This paper proposes an analytical method for estimating the increase in bearing capacity gained from the included horizontal strips or ties of tensile reinforcing in the foundation soil below the footing built near the crest of a slope. A failure mechanism, including the concept of'wide slab effect', adopted in the present study for analyzing the bearing capacity of foundations in reinforced slopes, is established through the observed model test behaviors described by Binquet SE Lee and Huang et al, and the Boussinesq solutions. The analytical results are then compared with the experimental data described in the paper by Huang et al. Also in order to properly evaluate the soil reinforcement interaction, typical pullout test values of the apparent friction coefficient, which usually vary with depths owing to both the increase of the shearing volume and the increase in local stress caused by soil dilatancy, are analyzed and related functionally. Furthermore, analytical parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effect and significance of various pertinent parameters associated with design of reinforced slope foundations. In this paper the method of estimating the bearing capacity of shallow foundation on a finite layer of sandy ground underlain by a rigid base was proposed by assessing results of the model test and the numerical analyses. For model experiments, the centrifuge tests under 1g and 20 g of gravitational levels were performed with sandy soils sampled from the field, changing the relative density of sandy soil and the ratio of thickness of sand layer (H) to the width of strip footing (B). As results of tests, bearing capacity tends to increase with the value of H/B while settlement for a given load intensity decreases. Bearing capacity also increases with relative density of the soil. In order to propose the method of estimating the bearing capacity of thin sandy layer underlain by a rigid base, values of bearing capacity factors from test results were compared with the values of modified bearing capacity factor by Mandel & Salencon (1972) considering the effect of H/B value on bearing capacity. The relation of bearing capacity factor ratio, normalizing friction angle of sandy soil, with the value of H/B was suggested so that this relation could be applied to design in the safe side. The results of numerical analyses obrained by changing the layout of footing, relative density of sandy soil and the value of H/B, were in good agreements with the suggested relation.
In this paper, the behaviour of composite steel-CFRP members is studied experimentally and using FE-analysis. The use of advance composite materials in construction for repair and rehabilitation has become a frequent used method in the last decade. FRP composites have many advantages over the traditional technique of steel bonding for a number of reasons: 1. Composites add little or no additional weight to a building, eliminating the need for costly foundation strengthening. 2. FRP composites are very thin (1.2mm to 1.4mm). So there is no loss of floor space and negligible effect over the architectural aspect. 3. FRP composites do not corrode, this makes it long lasting. However, the method is yet to become a mainstream application due to a number of economical and design related issues. Brittle debonding failure, aging effect on bonding, broad based awareness and proper design guidelines are the main concern for future research works. This paper is focused on the ultimate load carrying capacity of the CFRP-strengthened beams and their effect on the deflection and failures modes by varying the amount of CFRP content.
The stiff top layer in a soil profile, which can happen in winter, may change the isolation effect of the wave barrier. The research scope of this paper is the investigation of the propagation of surface waves in layered soil with a stiff layer on its top, and the isolation effect of the solid stiff wave barrier. The investigations have been performed numerically by the Boundary-Element Method as a two-dimensional problem. A strip foundation vibrated harmonically in vertical direction was considered as the vibration source. Three soil profiles, a homogeneous half-space, two profiles with different thickness of stiff top layer, with two different types of wave barriers were investigated. The profiles with a stiff top layer show considerable reductions of the amplitude of the vibration in comparison to the homogeneous soil profile. The layered soil profiles with a stiff top layer do not show wave propagation velocities as high as they are expected from the material properties. Furthermore the vibration amplitudes in a frozen soil are much smaller with distance than in a non-frozen soil.
This paper is an experimental and numerical research works about the effects of the b earing capacity of sloped rubble mound on the density of rubble mound and the position of footing. Centrifuge model tests were performed to investigate the bearing capacity of rubble m ound by changing the density of rubble mound and the location of loading in forms of s trip loading to simulate the caisson. Materials of rubble mound used in the model tests were crushed rocks having similar value of uniformity coefficient to the value in field. Two different relative densities of 80% and 90% were prepared during tests. The dimens ions of centrifuge model were trapezoidal shape of model mound having the bottom wid th of mound, 30cm and height of mound, 10cm. Gravity level applied during the centrif uge test was 50G. Surcharge loading in the forms of strip loading was applied on the t op of the sloped model mound. Tests were carried out by changing the position of loadi ng. The rigid model footing was located in the center of top of the model rubble mound and the edge of model footing was at the crest of mound. Test results were analyzed by using the limit equilibrium methods proposed by Meyer hof(1957) and Bowles(1982) and the numerical approach with FLAC being available com mercially software. For the numerical estimations with FLAC, the rubble mound was si mulated with the constitutive relationship of Mohr-Coulomb elasto-plastic model.

This paper presents a numerical method for implementing a nonlinear constitutive material model developed by Lade, into a finite element computer program. The techniques used are based on the displacement method for the solution of axial symmetric and plane strain nonlinear boundary value problems. Laboratory behaviour of Baekma river sand(#40-60) is used to illustrate the determination of the parameters and verification of the model. Computer procedure is developed to determine the material parameters for the nonlinear model from the raw laboratory test data. The model is verified by comparing its predictions with observed data used for the determination of the parameters and then with observed data not used for the determination. Three categories of tests are carried out in the back-prediction exercise; (1) A hydrostatic test including loading and unloading response, (2) Conventional triaxial drained compression tests at three different confining pressure and (3) A model strip footing test not including in the evaluation of material parameters. Pertinent observations are discussed based on the comparison of predicted response and experimental data.

This paper presented as follows results of laboratory model tests with various shaped footings on soil bed reinforced with the strips on the base of behaviour of soil structure according to the loads and triaxial test results reinforced with geotextiles. Their parameters studied were the effects on the bearing capacity of a footing of the first layer of reinforcement, horizontal and vertical spacing of layers, number of layers, tensile strength of reinforcement and iclination load to the vertical 1.Depending on the strip arrangement, ultimate bearing capacity values could be more improved than urreinforced soil and the failure of soil was that the soil structure was transfered from the macrospace to microspase and its arrangement, from edge to edge to face to face. 2.The reinforcement was produced the reinforcing effects due to controlling the value of factor of one and permeable reinforcement was never a barrier of drainage condition. 3.Strength ratio was decreased as a linear shape according to increment of saturation degree of soil used even though at the lower strength ratio, the value of M-factor was rot influenced on the strength ratio but impermeable reinforcement decreased the strength of bearing capacity. 4.Ultimate bearing capacity under the plane-strain condition was appeared a little larger than triaxial or the other theoretical formulars and the circular footing more effective. 5.The maximum reinforcing effects were obtained at U I B=o.5, B / B=3 and N=3, when over that limit only acting as a anchor, and same strength of fabric appeared larger reinforcing effects compared to the thinner one. 6.As the LDR increased, more and more BCR occurred and there was appeared a block action below Z / B=O.5, but over the value, decrement of BCR was shown linear relation, and no effects above one. 7.The coefficient of the inclination was shown of minimum at the three layers of fabrics, but the value of H / B related to the ultimate load was decreased as increment of inclination degree, even though over the value of 4.5 there wasn't expected to the reinforcing effects As a consequence of the effects on load inclination, the degree of inclination of 15 per cent was decreased the bearing capacity of 70 per cent but irnproved the effects of 45 per cent through the insertion of geotextile.
It is worthwhile to verify the vertical stress distribution in soil mass for rigorous design of foundation. A series of laboratory model tests were performed to investigate the Boussinesq's theory on vertical stress increment in sandy soil mass caused by surface loading. The test results were also compared with Boussinesq's theoretical values. The Boussinesq's theoretical values were always smaller than test results under the footing regardless of depth. Outside of the footing the values were larger than the measured stress at the depth of just footing width. The theory and the test showed similar results when the depth reached two and three times the footing width. The vertical stress decreased as the applied load increased. These trends were confirmed to be valid for the considered range of the relative density of sand and/or the width of footing. More accurate values can be acquired by correcting the theoretical values using these results when Boussinesq's theory is used.

In this study, we considered the bearing capacity of strip footing over clay layers partially replaced by sand. The FEM analysis is performed to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity. Partial replacement is defined by multiples of footing width(B) and inclination of sides. The cases(B'=inf.) of sand layers equal to clay layers are preferentially conducted. The baring capacity of B'=inf. is comparative value for bearing capacity of partial replacement layers. ${\beta}$ is the ratio of ultimate bearing capacity of B'=inf and partial ultimate bearing capacity replacement. ${\beta}$ is used to analyze the characteristic of bearing capacity of clay layers partially replaced by sand. Each of the three undrained shear strengths of clay and friction angles of sand is considered. The result of this analysis shows that ${\beta}$ depends on sand depth.

For circular rigid footings with a rough base on sand, combined vertical - horizontal loading capacity was studied by three-dimensional numerical modelling. A numerical model was implemented to simulate the swipe loading and the probe loading methods and an interpretation procedure was devised in order to eliminate the numerical error from the restricted mesh density. Using the Mohr-Coulomb plasticity model, the effect of friction angle was studied under the associated flow-rule condition. The swipe loading method, which is efficient in that the interaction diagram can be drawn with smaller number of analyses, was confirmed to give similar results with the probe loading method, which follows closely the load-paths applied to real structures. For circular footings with a rough base, the interaction diagram for combined vertical (V) - horizontal (H) loading and the inclination factor were barely affected by the friction angle. It was found that the inclination factors for strip and rectangular footings are applicable to circular footings. For high H/V ratios, the results by numerical modelling of this study were smaller than the results of previous studies. Discussions are made on the factors affecting the numerical results and the areas for further researches.
